Service was sub par at best, the cleanliness and overall organization of the restaurant was really terrible, not to mention the food being overpriced for the quality. The restaurant was filthy, there was food literally all over the floor as though no one had even attempted to clean all day. The tables and chairs were sticky and dirty along with then menus. We had to give back two of the menus to get different ones because they had ketchup all over them. We ordered some hot dogs and fries for our kids and the server had completely forgotten them, then proceeded to put them in long after we ordered them, so much so that the rest of our other food had been eaten already by the time the hotdogs came out. When the server stated they had forgot the items and she was "so sorry" I stated to her that now, since they were so late, we didn't even need the fries because we had already given our kids different stuff since the adults all already were eating. That aside, rather then just taking them completely off the bill, the items were still on the bill, even though we said we didn't want them. Again instead of taking them off the bill, once pointed out, the employees of the restaurant gave us a $1.60 discount (.80 per meal price). I was pretty frustrated with that, felt that the service was not great to begin with. To top that off, when reviewing the bill after that, there was a forced gratuity of almost $20 dollars, plus a debit fee of almost $5. Our party wasn't tiny, 4 adults and 3 kids, 7 and younger, but still absolutely ridiculous. Overall, I would not return to this restaurant, nor would I recommend anyone to go here for anything more than a bowl of the chowder which was the highlight but not...
Read moreCame to the coast for a friend's birthday and wanted to get some chowder. Got there and sat down and right away realized they were very under staffed. That wasn't the problem though. After sitting at our table for about 20 minutes a group of 5 people came in and sat down. The waiter still had never came to our table to even ask if we wanted water but went over and took the order from the group of 5. Sat there for another 10 minutes and finally went up to the counter and ordered some soup. Our friend stood at the counter for another 5 minutes until the guy behind the counter rudely told him he would take his order at the table. Finally the waiter came over and when I pointed out that we had been waiting before the group of 5 and it was pretty unprofessional he told us we could go somewhere else. After waiting that long I told him we just wanted some chowder so he took our order of soup but still offered no drinks or anything. Sat there for another 15 minutes watching new customers come in and get there drink and orders taken and still didn't get our soup. We finally just left. I have never had such horrible service in my life. I get that they are under staffed and was understanding to a point but the two guys working were both incredibly rude and unprofessional. I always make a point to go there when I visit the coast but I will not be back. Mo's chowder is just as good and they have more options so if you want decent service I would...
Read moreI was planning on stopping at the Chowder Bowl in Newport that came highly recommended by many. Had to get back to Lincoln City so I kept driving through Depoe Bay when I saw The Chowder Bowl! Thinking it was a second location, I decided to pull over real quick for a cup of chowder, to at least get something in my stomach for the time being.
It was about 3 pm as I came in. The ambiance was fun and the guy who greeted me as I walked in was very friendly. I asked him if they were the same as Newport’s Chowder Bowl. I thought I almost saw a chuckle as he looked, disappointed, maybe, “No, we are not.”
Immediately, I had second thoughts but I figured I was already there and hungry. He brought me a cup of chowder before I had even gotten settled. There were 2 other patrons, one definitely a local as she chatted with the server / bartender. Another person came in and picked up an order to-go.
The chowder tasted like Progresso soup. No bacon - maybe 1 potato chunk cut into very small pieces, thin and watery base, very salty but surprisingly with little favor. I only got to a few slivers of clams at the very bottom of the cup, which granted wasn’t very large being a small diner-like coffee cup. The clams were, thankfully, not rubbery or over-cooked. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Next time I will make sure I have the time to stop in Newport. Thank God it...
