I'm a local who moved away and came back to visit the beach. My initial experience with this establishment was wonderful. The owner took my order over the phone and I came in to pick it up. When I came to pick it up, the owner was very inviting and passionate about his café. It was inspiring--the coffee was so unbelievably good, I came back every morning during my stay. I ended up buying my own Italian espresso maker just so I could have something similar at home until I could visit again.
Almost a year later, I came to visit again. One of the highlights of my trip was going to get a vanilla latte from this café and enjoying it on the beach. I called to place a pickup order and the owner answered. I asked to place a pickup order——after I had asked for two breakfast sandwiches, I went on to place my coffee order... I was in the middle of asking for an Iced Caramel latte when the owner interrupted me and said I should just come in and place the coffee order because it will only take "a few minutes to make" and he didn't want it sitting there getting hot (or cold) depending on what I was ordering. I appreciated that. However, whenever I came in to pickup my order, he had already made a "Caramel iced latte" I started to order when he cut me off. I have a sister who can't have sugar or dairy and I WAS going to ask for almond milk and sugar-free syrup. When I went to place the coffee order with him, he said "I already made it with regular vanilla sweetener", I told him my sister can't have regular sweetener and that she needed sugar-free and almond milk. He started talking about skim milk and how it would be fine. I stopped him and told him I needed to have it exactly as she needs it. There was no one behind me in line needing service and only one couple at a table who had already been taken care of. I reiterated I needed a specific order that wasn't mine and he reluctantly took the specific order. I then tried to ask for the hot vanilla latte I had been looking forward to since my first visit and he pointed to the Iced caramel latte he had already made. At my wits end I said, "that's fine I'll just take that" while contemplating walking out and going elsewhere. I should have just walked out but very few places in that area were open at the time and it would've taken more time out of my short trip to place another order elsewhere. After leaving, I vowed to never go back. I can't imagine what this man might have been dealing with when this occurred but I didn't deserve that experience. I always make it a point to support small businesses, especially in my home town but I now understand why there was no one behind me in line. There are people with diabetes and gastrointestinal issues that simply CANNOT have sugar or dairy options. If you want to exclude them from your business then don't bother offering the alternatives. It's really that simple. I sincerely hope this review changes how you treat people in the future because while your coffee is delightful, the way you treat people after you made a...
Read moreManaged to get in at about 1530 for my daily coffee fix... only about 8+ hours late! Upon walking in, my first objective was to locate a restroom, and began walking toward the back where they're usually located. The staff knew exactly what was going on and very courteously advised it was located near the front.
I was served by a man with an Italian (?) accent, who was quite friendly from the get-go. I ordered a pour-over as I usually do, and he explained that the coffee used for this is pre-ground and not at all similar to the coffee shops 'up north'. He suggested a regular brew, and I decided to follow his advice. It was definitely better than average, but not necessarily amazing.
The following morning I went in again for a proper morning coffee, and also was drawn to a pasticcio. The same gentleman from the previous day explained all the ins and outs of pasticcio, and I was sold. The end product was even more delicious than it had sounded. I will certainly be back each morning for the remainder of my stay.
The space is inviting and comfortable, with plenty of seating available. In my extremely brief stays here, people would be greeted by name and asked if they wanted 'the usual'. Definitely a good...
Read moreThis place is absolutely amazing. While having been in town, eating mostly seafood of every sort from a number of different places, we decided it was time for something sweet.
Walking in to what seemed like a quiet hole in the wall a bit off the beaten path, we weren't sure the place was even open! Much to our great relief, they were open for business! The owner greeted us at the counter, with his thick exotic accent. My wife got a latte, a crepe, and I ordered the grilled tuna with a Bahama mama smoothie. So. Delicious.
While the owner had started the sandwich, the manager working finished it... and the two have a comical difference in opinion on how their breads ought to be served up. The manager wanted us to see just how delicious the bread is when prepared his way, and brought out a plate with the warm olive oil basted bread covered in Nutella. Goodness gracious it was amazing.
We were then given some secret family recipes to some other dishes, and purchased some of the rest of their delicious treats on the way out.
In short, this will be a staple in our food stops when visiting the Destin area from now on!!!! Very highly...
