Man I’ll let you in on a secret. Remember when your dad did a barbeque, or the neighbors, maybe it was the 80’s, or the 70’s even. Remember that one time it was really special but you didn’t quite know why? No, it wasn’t the gray and over charred patty you remember, it was the time they revealed that homespun wonder, the onion kaiser. Iggy’s, in their genius, have done the same, and it features on their bodega breakfast sandwich. Now when ethical behavior gets the better of me, or I’m blessedly hangover free for a change, or maybe Sunday 9am is just no time for such things as bologna for breakfast, I might go for a “build your own”; an egg sandwich, veggie meat, maybe a slice of american. The glory lies in the knowledge that I can make this otherwise spartan takeaway a thing of beauty because it will be on an awesome toasty, savory-yet-oniony-sweet reminiscence of all good things past, the onion kaiser. And yet, no you can’t. They won’t let you. You beg and plead, telling them how great it is. Nope. And remember, you’re negotiating from the cold hard tarmac outside, through the bottom of a thin opening in their carry-out window; they’re on the inside with the toasty warm kaiser rolls. Perhaps a line is forming. Are there a limited amount, you wonder? Will some ratio be spoiled if one kaiser is used? “That’s just how it is, boss.” (Clearly you’re not the boss here.) The thought crosses your mind to go all Jack Nicholson on them where he’d say, “well you have kaiser rolls don’t you, and you have eggs,” Karen Black looking mortified at your side, but you remember it’s the 2000’s now and you don’t want to get banned. Desultory, you order it on an English Muffin, a sammy which now bears all the hallmarks of an Egg McMuffin. You beg them to make it well toasted. If it’s not you remember that McDo is exactly 1.5 mi north and they invented the thing anyway. Want to give 10 stars but reluctantly have to make it 4.5, but since you can’t do that will make it a solid five cuz this place is...
Read moreWell, well, well.... I have to admit. I wasn't sure if I was going to like this place. A walk-up? In downtown Detroit? With runny eggs? I think I'll pass. LOL Well, I am SO GLAD I tried it! It was SO GOOD! Basically this is an breakfast sandwich joint. There are a few other items, such as a breakfast burrito and eggs benedict, etc, but the egg sandwich is the star of the show. The Original Eggie has a 'build your own' concept. I chose to put my Eggie and Iggy sauce on a biscuit, added white cheddar and grilled turkey. I tried one of their hashbrown patties as a side! MMMM! Get one! My sandwich was SO GOOD! The biscuit was perfect. I read somewhere that a lady makes them from scratch for Iggy's. That 'lady' needs a raise! The biscuit was moist, firm, yet fluffy with a slight crispy coating to it! I really can't say enough about the biscuit! The Eggie was PERFECT. I'm not a big fan of a runny eggs but this one was cooked hard enough to be noticed as a substantial part of the sandwich. (TIP: When I ordered, I was asked if I was 'OK' with a runny egg so I assume they will cook it hard for you if you prefer!) The grilled turkey was a nice thick slab, not sliced lunch meat. It added a good texture to the sandwich. I didn't notice the white cheddar on my sandwich but I did notice the taste of the Iggy sauce. Iggy sauce is like a dijonnaise. It's slightly sweet and tangy. I didn't think I was going to like it but it was very good! It really added a nice flavor. Overall, I was HIGHLY impressed. It was the best egg sandwich I've ever had. The hash brown was a little greasy and cold but the flavor and quality was good. I liked the walk-up concept (TIP there is NO WHERE to sit nearby so plan to eat in your car or walk around to find a park). I liked the speed of the service and I REALLY liked the food. The ingredients were high quality. I highly recommend you give this place a try if you're looking for something a...
Read moreIggy's is a cute, literal "hole in the wall" take-out counter on a side street in Downtown Detroit. While there is no seating at the restaurant, there are plenty of great seating options at a nice little park just down the block. It felt very safe, with very nice shops and buildings, and there were lots of people around.
They have a fairly standard menu of breakfast sandwiches and other lunch fare. The breakfast sandwich is their specialty - You can choose your bread and sandwich toppings, with an extra charge based on the number/type you select. Each is served with "jammy" (i.e. runny yolk) eggs.
I arrived in the late morning and it was still very busy with several people in line and waiting to pick up orders. I opted for the brioche bun with egg, bacon and orange cheddar. The bun was perfectly toasted and the sauce was quite tasty. I was not a huge fan of the egg, as it was definitely very runny - grab extra napkins! The bacon was also very crispy, to the point of being crunchy and semi-burnt, so it was not quite to my taste either.
Overall, it was a decent breakfast sandwich, which would be excellent with a few tweaks. It's fairly pricey, however each is cooked to order in the back with fresh ingredients, so I think it's justified. The staff were not overly friendly, but the food came out piping hot.
It's a very central location, so it's easy to walk to and grab a bite on the run.
Pro tip: While they sell coffee at Iggy's, there's also a great little french Cafe across the street, Canelle, where you can grab an amazing...
