Metro Detroit Brewery Discovery Tour stop # 40. Motor City Brewing Works is now in its 30th year. 🍻 🎉 Assuming you don't drive right past the pay lot that is also the entrance from Canfield, this is an inviting place. Yeah, there are only 5 parking places in front but the vibe is super-friendly, welcoming, kind of a neighborhood pub feel to it. Sweet. The smell of pizza, the snippets of conversations overheard, the sounds coming from the kitchen, I'm liking it a lot. The beer is very good though there are only 9 brews on tap. The range is pretty far-reaching for only 9, from a Czech Pilsner through mild & wheat ales, IPAs, a sour to a Belgian Tripel & a barleywine clocking in at 12.6% ABV. The pizza listing are enough to make the mouth water. One has roasted pears and fresh figs. Interesting idea. From $13.25 - $16.25 There are also a couple of sandwiches, 4 salads and a half dozen appetizers. Except the side salad ($7) & the chili ($6), everything there ranges from $11.75 -$16.25. I ended up being there so long I need to eat something. Not hungry enough for a pizza - despite how tantalizing the scent - I went for the chili. Underwhelming. Too tomato-y and underseasoned. Honestly, it was more a meatless bean stew than chili. Plenty of beans but none of the flavor one expects. 2 out of 5, at best. 👎 There is outdoor seating with lots of greenery making it feel like a garden. And there is an upstairs space, as well. I suspect I'll return. But I won't...
Read moreOn a recent Sunday afternoon, I decided to take the advice of a fried and try, what she described as the best pizza in the New Center / Midtown / Downtown Detroit area. I had been by this establishment on numerous occasions but never actually going in. I had always thought of it as a "burger and a beer joint". However, to my delight, it was much more than that.
The atmosphere was relaxed and laid back, while the staff was very cordial and accommodating. After scanning the menu for ten minutes or so (took me a while to decide due to the multiple selections that tempted my taste buds), I decided on the Maui Wowie Pizza. I loved the fact that it was freshly made, small enough for one person and yet large enough to be split by two.
Now I'm not one to embellish the merits of food...especially when it comes to pizza, but THIS pie was by far the BEST Hawaiian pizza that I had ever eaten, and I have eaten many. It chad just the right amount of toppings, with a flavorful crust and the fresh basil gave it a little extra surprise than would normally come on a Hawaiian style pizza. I highly recommend giving this place a try. I will definitely be making this place one of my haunts! The Maui Wowie will be by standard selection, but I look forward to the Bronx Bomber and the BBQ Chicken as well! Oh, and on a side note, I've heard that the beer here isn't too shabby...
