TLDR, some of staff needs to be trained not to be pretentious
One day I asked for a Breve. I was asked, half and half or heavy cream? The next time I came in I asked for a Breve, I was told, "We don't have Breves we use whole milk for lates." I asked, "You don't have half n half or heavy cream?" He responded, " We don't put that through our machine" I said, " I'm all set then" and left...The milk doesn't "go through" a machine. I've made many Breves. Worked at many places with different espresso machines, and known baristas better than I. They've made countless breves with the same machine for years. It in no way harms a machine.
Edit* To be clear, a Breve is a late with half n half instead of milk. I've never been to a cafe that has half n half and doesn't make them. I have been to cafes that don't carry half n half, just individual creamers. They coudln't make me a breve, and I didn't give them a one star review.
The staff showed they knew what the drink was, but lied straight to my face about why they didn't want to make it. Which is still unclear. I'm sure many people have pleasant experiences there. It's a cute location. My experience did not feel cute. Minimalize people's problem experiences all you want, but if the prentiousness continues, I'm sure there'll be more poor reviews. If it's policy to not make a late with half n half, its probably not a problem limitted to an employee.
I hope that attitude changes and wish...
Read moreCafe Sous Terre has been a grounding third place that I frequent while on campus. It holds a multitude of potential experiences for each person who walks down the stairs and through its doors, and you never know which characters you’ll meet on any given day. On your first day at Wayne State University, you might walk in a see one of your friends sitting right by the door, a comforting face among all the nerves and uncertainty of the day. You may walk in and see Reimer, with his sunny demeanor which I’ve found to be extremely uncommon for the owner of any business. Maybe a mother and daughter from the same village as you in Lebanon might sit down next to you and your cousin, and the daughter may become a steady figure on your Instagram feed. You can share your experiences with them and miss the home we haven’t been able to see for a long time, in all of its past glory. A woman you used to dog sit for may walk in with her friend and order you a glass of wine at 10:00 am. You may sit down next to a customer from your old job who appreciated your kindness in helping him down the stairs, and maybe he’ll offer you his old guitar and a potential position at his lab on campus. Or maybe, you’ll be all alone and finally be able to complete the homework tasks you’ve been putting off for a week. You’ll have your coffee, eat your bagel, and feel ready to get on with the rest...
Read moreWish owner spent more time taking care of the neighborhood. Builder had to steer him in a better direction- almost covered up entrance to neighbors basement with fencing for his new outdoor space. Wish owner gave out some flyers/ discount codes/ stickers/ menus- literally anything so we felt like we could/ should utilize/ be patrons of this venue. Super upscale atmosphere and price point. Builder Ben did a fabulous job with the layout and quality of install work inside.
Just really wish something was done before during or even now for the long time locals/ neighbors/ tenants around the bar so people like Mike, or the owners on the other side would feel like we could go in- it’s been the opposite. Instead it’s been pretty awful to live next to this place. Can be quite loud at night, in the summer they open the windows and do techno parties into the night. Coffee is actually quite good- which is why I can’t give Reimer 1 star. Asked to take home a menu to put into the Airbnb and was told I should print at home if I wanted to do that and there were no extras.
Owner Reimer is like being around someone out of the movie...
