Checking out the new The Tabletop Tap location. I like it! It's bigger, more open, and feels more like a bar. (And there's hard liquor behind the bar, which I don't remember being at the old location.)
Gone are the multigame consoles built into the bar (understandable, for lots of reasons), but several stand-up arcade units line the walls, including a cool Warlords 4-player tabletop game, Asteroids, an old beer bar game, Frogger, a three-in-one Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga machine, Joust, MortalKombat II, and Centipede. As before, there are geeky decorations all over the walls, but they seem more organized, less random than before.
There are hooks and outlets at regular intervals beneath the bar rail. The booths look comfy and are spacious enough for four people to play a standard-sized board game. And of course, there is still a massive wall of games behind the bar for people to play.
There is an enticing neon sign saying "Arcade" that points down some space-carpeted stairs to a dark basement, but they were blocked by a velvet rope. Apparently there is some negotiation that needs to happen with the City of Englewood before that rope can be removed, but when that happens, that promises to be a very cool space.
Like lots of responsible businesses, they now have a self-serve automatic water fountain. I like this trend, personally, but I can see where some might not.
The music is good: mostly '80s; Duran Duran's "The Reflex" is playing as I write this, but it's not so loud that it's inhibiting conversation at all, though I can imagine that the place gets loud when busy.
Nice place, and I'm glad to see it back...
Read moreI live 1.5 hours away from this place but finally made it in to check it out. There are TONS of games (between games that are built in to the bar-top, standalone arcade games, and tabletop games available to play there must be hundreds). Super chill yet classy place, and had the most fun I've had in a bar in a long long time.
Along with that, there was an impressive variety of local beers. Attached is a picture I took of where I hung out at the end of the bar playing Super Mario while enjoying my Sugar Magnolia Belgian Wit from Locavore Beer Works. There were like 7 or 8 other gaming stations built into the beautiful bar-top all featuring different classic types of games (each gaming station has a selection of like 40 games) that I'll have to go back and try out.
All in all, it's a great place to go enjoy a great beer and a bunch of games that I haven't gotten to play in decades.
PS. The music and atmosphere were phenomenal. Probably the nerdiest place I've been in my entire life (you can pay $1 to roll a 60-sided dice, if you roll a 60 you get free drinks), but I must say, the smooth jazz versions of all my favorite game soundtracks from my childhood added a super fun and classy feel to my evening there. Will definitely be going...
Read moreHonestly every time I’ve been here the female owner has been so rude. I get being shy or quiet, but it’s so bad it makes me not want to return for the games. When my older dad comes to town he wants to visit to play his favorite arcade games and proudly wear their bar shirt he purchased last time. He tried to strike up a conversation with her and was completely shut down. You could see it made him sad as he’s talked to people in Minnesota about this bar. Thinking about that makes my blood boil. Also my boyfriend and I haven’t been to a bar in about 6 months and decided to come here, and one of the first things he said was “wow she won’t even look at or say hi to us” as we sat at the bar, clearly bothering this woman by just sitting there waiting to order. If you go here, expect nostalgia but do NOT expect a smile from her, I’ve never felt like such a burden to a business (especially family owned?..)
So disappointing and aggravating. Will absolutely find other bars with some...
