I have never posted a negative review before, but I’m just so shocked that i feel I have to share this. My friends and I went in today to get lattes and I had to go to the bathroom very badly, so while they were deciding their orders I asked the man (50’s, white) for the key to the bathroom and he immediately went into a tirade against my request. He said very in a harsh tone and condescendingly “Oh NO NOPE no no, it doesn’t work like that buddy. You’ve got to order, it’s not a public restroom maam. I’m not your bathroom attendant” or something along those lines). I was so shocked I didn’t speak for a second, and then I said “wait excuse me?” because I thought I missed something. He went on “yeah it doesn’t work like that pal, not how it works here, not gonna fly”. I turned to my friends and said “oh my gosh, should we leave? I—that was so rude” And that’s when he said “nah nah you don’t have to leave, it was sarcasm” (which it totally wasn’t, my whole group and other random customers nearby were dead silent in awkward shock). He eventually said the keys at the end, take it. And then he tried to apologize but I was already crying. I went to the bathroom and my friends were so upset for me that we just left. He tried to double back and say sorry which is fine but it was just so shocking and it happened so fast that we had to leave, it was so bad. I’ve honestly never been spoken to like that, at a coffee shop or anywhere, he looked so instantly angry and condescending. Maybe he was just having a bad day but I am a barista too and I would never ever treat anyone like that! Working or not working, it’s no way to speak to someone. I just don’t know...
Read moreMutiny Cafe is an interesting conglomeration of the old, the new, and the weird. It's a used bookstore, a used record store, a shop for new and old comics, a coffee shop, and a performance space. Among other things!
Maybe it's slightly more of a bookshop than anything else. There's a rich selection of used books of various genres. The rows of bookshelves are sometimes too close together and too dark for me to browse comfortably. But there are comfy old chairs scattered around the store, so that maybe makes up for the trouble... a bit. The store also offers a robust collection of odd local publications from newspapers to pamphlets to zines.
For comic fans, there's a subscription comics service, some older collectible comics, and trade paperbacks. There are several bins of old LPs, too. The coffee shop area (with odd gifts and offbeat food choices) seems to always be busy. Sometimes, a patron finds the pinball machines worth attention. As noted above, the back room can shift easily into a small performance venue, which is a big plus.
But that brings up an important question. Would you rather have more shelves and more space for books, or pinball machines, and a photo both, and so on? Of course, there are plenty of other bookstores that are filled to the bursting with stacks of books, so Mutiny's preferences make for a nice change. The ambience is a little bit too cool, or too hip, for me to feel quite at home. But the strong cultural profile shows why Denver Public Library partnered with this store a few years ago for a local...
Read moreAs the Baker District became more and more gentrified over the last 20+ years, Broadway has seen business after business come and go. Thank your lucky stars MUTINY! isnt one of them. MUTINY! isnt just one of the surviving businesses, it's an anchor on the corner of Broadway and Ellsworth. And they keep rolling with the times, adapting to the needs of the neighborhood and their customers. Mutiny is soon (as I write this at the end of Nov., 2018) to be the only comic book store between Lakewood and Aurora when Mile High Comics closes its Denver location and co consolidates their operations in their store on the north side of town. That's ok because Mutiny has been more than ready to grab that baton and run with it. They already cater to a very discerning community of geeks by providing an excellent curated selection of used books, vinyl, comics, CDs, DVDs...ok, let's just say a Wide Selection of Information... AND new comics weekly! Is there more? Why, yes Barbara, there is.. MUTINY! also has a charming little cafe set up at the front of the store that reminds me of Muddy's circa 1984, a real working photo booth, a ROW (not just one or two) of pinball machines.... and...and ... breathe....everything! They even sell the full array of Hostess products at the cafe so you can get your Twinkie on while bobbing your head to the GoGos while shuffling through the latest shipment of Marvel comics. And the coffee is really really good and not too expensive. So, really, what more do you...
