Edit 6/30/23: My review below was posted back in April 2018. I made a small edit about a month ago to remove the part where I mentioned my frequent travels to France to visit friends (and to visit someone I was dating - reason for deletion). I am surprised to see a response from owners after all these years. I'd like to add, my opinion of this bakery's croissant is my comparison of French croissants that I've tried in several areas of France... So, I guess I should have left this note in my original review since owner thinks I have an Americanized taste. Anyway, thank you owner for inviting me back, but I'll continue my search elsewhere for croissants.
Original Review 4/13/18: I was excited to visit after reading all the good reviews this bakery received. I really wanted this place to be my go to, but I left with disappointment.
3/5 because the croissants were just okay... they weren’t as fluffy as I expected it to be. I felt like I was biting into a baguette. Also, the daughter working the front wasn’t very welcoming. It seemed like she was unhappy to be there. For a person to be the first contact of the environment, I hoped to encounter a person who is cheerful and friendly. There are many shops and markets that sell the same pastries I purchased so a great first impression makes or breaks the...
Read moreI am new to Denver and LOVE French pastries so when I heard about this bakery I was really excited.
Service
I came in today and said hello to the brunette woman with glasses. She just gave me a blank stare and didn't respond. Then I was served by a blond woman with a nose piercing and glasses who was extremely rude. It seemed like I was a bother to her. Everytime I made one selection she'd be like 'Anything else?' then whenever I would say the next thing she would sigh in irritation. They couldn't serve iced coffee for some reason?? Also I would've liked my pastries in a box with the bakery name but she didn't hear me or didn't want to and stuffed all my pastries in two white paper bags. Unacceptable behavior from both of those women. If you don't want to work there then don't.
Food
The coffee was okay. The turkey and cheese crossiant was okay. The butter crossiant was DISGUSTING. Crossiants are supposed to be flaky not hard as a rock!
I paid $25 for a coffee, a soda, crossiant sandwich, 2 butter crossiants and a walnut crossiant and I was only able to eat the sandwich and barely drink the coffee.
What a waste of time and money!
I would suggest anyone interested in this place to go to Starbucks instead. They may not have French pastries but their service and...
Read moreFood We discovered pastries were kept in a refrigerated case after we received them, which we find unusual in our bakery experiences. Upon receiving the 40-degree pastries (which only remotely looked like the images on Trompeau’s website), we commented they were cold and the staff member suggested we heat them up. He then placed them in a microwave. The result is what we experience anytime a croissant is microwaved: a soggy, greasy product without any hint of flakiness. We tossed the pastries.
We also purchased a baguette against our better judgment (the baguettes looked exactly like Subway bread, nothing like the baguette images displayed on Google Maps). We also requested a more browned (well done) baguette. The employee gave us a wheat baguette. Fine. However, the baguette was not only spongy like Subway bread, it also tasted worse. We trashed the baguette as well.
Service When it was our turn at the counter, the employee asked us to hold. There was no line behind us. He then spoke with another employee in an office (we could see both) for at least two minutes, clearly not about an immediate issue that could be resolved quickly. Not a long wait time but puzzling that that the employee chose an involved conversation with another employee over serving...
