The Churro: Voodoo Doughnut has been on my list of gourmet doughnut shops to visit for years. I believe it now qualifies as a chain, but the original location was founded by Portlanders Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson and Tres Shannon in 2003. I wanted to try more doughnuts than I had room in my stomach for, so I prioritized my selection based on what I thought was most exclusive to Voodoo Doughnut and my tastes. The Churro is an old-fashioned doughnut, which is a subset of cake doughnuts that have a cracked surface and are moister as they are fried at a lower temperature. They are sometimes referred to as buttermilk doughnuts or fry cakes. Voodoo has their version dusted in cinnamon sugar and drizzled with vanilla and caramel. It was plenty sweet thanks to the drizzles and cinnamon sugar. Cinnamon was the dominant flavor, and I had a hard time detecting the vanilla and caramel as they both just came through as a generic sweetness. Texturally it seemed a little dry and was crumbly. Definitely not a bad doughnut, but somewhat underwhelming as it’s from a gourmet doughnut shop. Just okay 😐 This was a 3 star doughnut but 4 stars overall since the atmosphere was cool and the Banana Cream was a 5 star doughnut. Read moreReally unique, artsy and delicious doughnuts. They have vegan options! Only downside is that some of their donuts are extremely sweet. Make sure you read the entire description of the doughnut(s) you choose.
I ordered the The Homer, Sprinkle Cake, Bacon Maple Bar, Grape Ape and Guava Colada doughnuts. My favorite right off the bat were The Homer and the Bacon Maple Bar. First of all, the dough was super fluffy and soft overall. Every bite was enjoyable. The Homer had a slight taste of strawberry, which was from the pink frosting. It was simple, yet delicious. The Bacon Maple Bar was sweet but definitely balanced by the bacon slices on top. I loved that the bacon was very crispy and broke off easily on every bite.
The Sprinkle Cake doughnut was really good; however, I felt the frosting was harder and dry compared to the rest of the doughnuts. The Guava Colada doughnut was okay. The combination of all the flavors went well; however, the doughnut was very sweet for my liking. It is filled with a guava jelly, the frosting is very thick and has sweetened coconut flakes on top. The Grape Ape doughnut was my least favorite one simply because I didn’t like the flavor profile. Now I know that grape doughnuts are not my thing.
Overall I recommend this doughnut place 💖 I will be back to try...
Read moreIf you want to skip the long-winded rant, the summary is that they are delicious donuts and you should go there. For the rest, here goes nothing.
They have extremely unusual Donuts. I mean bizarre stuff that I don't think people would normally put in their mouth. Like something topped with tang for example. Powdered Tang? Does that sound right to you? What about Captain Crunch? Also putting Meats on a Donuts sounds counterintuitive, and yet these places have people in lines going down the street and around the corner waiting for them to open up. How is it that they could throw things together so weird and so disgusting that it looks like a child had done it, and yet it sounds really good right off the bat and everybody wants to eat it and they keep coming back for more? I'll tell you exactly why. Voodoo. It's in the name! They use voodoo magic to make their donuts delicious! They're using voodoo magic to get you to come back again and again! Not that I'm judging. I'm not a religious bigot or anything, in fact I'm going to eat another Voodoo Donuts because it is...
