Sadly, we had to deal with rude, condescending counter staff the morning of Friday, Dec. 13, 2019. No customer service skills at all. Who hired these girls?! I will never forget the nasty, annoyed look on the dark-haired girl with blue eyes and the thinly veiled nastiness displayed towards me - for just wanting to place an order. I started giving my order, and she interrupted me by commanding, "Drinks first!", with this blank, emotionless stare like something from West World. Like I'm supposed to know your evil protocol you nasty, possessed demon. Granted, they were very busy. But seriously?! That is not your customers' fault. Treat every dollar going into your business with RESPECT.
Then awhile later, the blonde girl comes out onto the floor and comments to the line of waiting people that they can also place their order at the counter in front of the establishment (which was unoccupied and people would have no way of knowing). And then she had to append snarkiness on the announcement with the comment, "That's why it's there!"
I will never go back and recommend others to stay away, unless I know these nasty people no longer work there (preferably by way of dismissal) and that the owners care enough to train their staff in customer skills (let alone customer service skills).
Update 1/12/2020 - I'm sad that there is no response from the owner after this review. It is 100% accurate, and there is nothing over-the-top about it. My lady friend that was traveling with me noticed and had the same experience and we were both in great morning moods ready to start the day before this encounter. Not to mention the staff in other venues around Flagstaff being wonderful.
Update 6/8/2023- Still no...
Read moreA Popular Coffeehouse with an Extensive Coffee Menu, but the Food Falls Short
I recently visited Macy’s European Coffeehouse during a trip to Flagstaff. It’s clearly a well-loved local spot, with lines out the door and a bustling atmosphere. The coffee menu is impressive, offering a wide variety of options to satisfy just about any coffee lover. From classic espresso drinks to specialty brews, there’s no shortage of choices when it comes to their coffee offerings.
However, when it came to the food menu, I found it to be limited and underwhelming. While the breakfast items we ordered were enjoyable, there wasn’t the same level of variety or creativity that I saw in the coffee selection. For a café that draws such a large crowd, I expected a bit more on the food side.
Another challenge was seating, which was difficult to find, especially on a cold Sunday morning. With long lines and limited space, it can be a bit of a scramble to secure a table, which might be frustrating for some.
The baristas and staff seemed focused on efficiency, which is understandable given the volume of customers. However, the lack of warmth and friendliness stood out. A small gesture like a friendly greeting or a quick acknowledgment would have gone a long way in making the experience more welcoming.
While Macy’s has a great reputation and I appreciate seeing a local establishment thriving, I personally didn’t feel it lived up to the extensive hype. It’s nice to see a bustling local café, but it wouldn’t be my first choice for a return visit. That said, if you’re a coffee enthusiast, the drink menu alone might be worth...
Read moreI only visited once while on vacation. It was very busy- doing quite the business! There was an old time hippy feel in the decor, layout, menu and many of the customers. I felt like it would have fit in Berkeley, SF, Portland or Santa Cruz in the 80's. Definitely a time (and place) traveling experience. The coffee is also time travel: darkly roasted like the "second wave" of coffee also present in any of those cities in the 80's. I tried an espresso, macchiato, cold brew, and cappuccino style drink with chocolate and cinnamon. The cold brew was good. The dark roast translated well in giving some flavor complexity with an especially pleasant finish and aftertaste. The espresso was too bitter but still had some sweetness and flavor. The macchiato was served with too much foam floating above the coffee, so the remaining non-dairy milk was not sufficient to balance the bitterness. The single cappuccino style drink did not have enough coffee flavor, but the chocolate and cinnamon worked very well and made a delicious drink. I would order with an extra shot for sure and that would probably be the right balance for the bitter roast. Lastly, the staff seemed a little stressed and were not so friendly or helpful. I tried to ask about coffee options they offered, but they didn't understand what I was saying. The espresso-sized drinks were served without saucers or little spoons and the overall look of the drinks was a little rough. Maybe they need more employees as they were very busy. Best of luck to this shop! It was a great travel experience and I recommend as a tourist stop for anyone into coffee...
