Came here for dinner during a brief visit to St. Augustine. It was conveniently just down the street from my hotel and I didn’t want to deal with parking in downtown just for a quick casual dinner after a long day’s drive from the Tampa area.
The place was busy and noisy - what one would expect from a sports bar almost any evening. I’m not into “bar food” and neither was my guest so we sat at a table. After a short wait I ordered the shrimp dinner (grilled, with tator tots and a cup of chili) and my guest ordered the chicken bacon ranch quesadilla with fries.
The meal came out expeditiously enough. The tator tots were plentiful and top notch but the chili was horrendous. It had no flavor and the meat had been so thoroughly worked over that it was just tiny pieces akin to mince meat rather than somewhat meaty chunks. The shrimp was grilled well but not at all seasoned.
My partner’s quesadilla was also sub-par and he’s a big quesadilla fan. I have never seen him not finish one but he barely ate half of this one. The bacon was small hard pieces like what you get out of a commercial bacon bits jar and the wrong cheeses were used. It was over-powering like sharp cheddar rather than a creamy, milder Mexican cheese or a Monterey Jack.
Also, the sauces seem to be made in house. My cocktail sauce had no kick which means it had little to no horseradish in it as a cocktail sauce should have. My partner’s salsa (for the chips) was watery and flavorless. Neither of us are into hot sauce or spicy food but both of these traditional sauces should have had a little bite to them and more flavor.
The service was friendly but inattentive. I don’t know if our server had too many tables to deal with or is just not a good server but our water/soda glasses went unfilled until the end of the meal and two requests for additional artificial sweeteners also went ignored after being acknowledged - thus she heard the request but forgot, much like she did for the refills.
My single experience was not good so I won’t be returning. The fact that it was busy must mean that it has something going for it but I suspect it’s the beer and maybe wings and sandwiches. Can’t speak to those things but I’d stay away from anything...
Read moreThis was a neat little place we decided to stop at while biking on the island. We stopped in for a drink but decided to stay for some food. The atmosphere is weird...let me explain. The porch, tables, and fascia are kinda old and weathered. Once might get the impression that it needs to be ripped out and built again, however, it had a charm that was reminiscent of the ocean and driftwood that made us feel comfortable. We were within a stones throw of the Lions Bridge and could see bits of the inlet. We mostly saw traffic going across the bridge but it was still nice. I ordered chicken wings, the Mrs ordered a mac and cheese bowl. Hers was REALLY good...I actually had wished I ordered it. It had Mac and Cheese, grilled chicken, basil, Parmesan cheese...it was great. My chicken wings were a little confusing to order until she explained it to me. The wings dont come separated like almost ALL chicken wings are...that meant that you had to separate the drumstick from the wing. This was brought out when the menu had it listed as 3 (6)., 5(10), etc...
I didnt really like pulling the wings apart like that...I like the more traditional wings, but the sauce was pretty good.
All in all the prices were what you would expect from a touristy place but we still enjoyed the ambiance and our server was very nice and accommodating.
Id recommend trying it our for yourselves...
Read moreAte here 2 years ago, loved the food & had great service and I'll preface this by saying I do not complain online or leave reviews. Visited yesterday morning. Walked in around 11:40 AM. Took a while but our server (don't recall name but had dark mid length hair. The other taller girl with curly hair/blond highlights was doing great with her tables our girl seemed not too happy to begin with) came over and got the drink order. It took some time to get those, I'd say 10 or so minutes. Once she brought the drinks, she said she's be right back after taking another tables order. At this time she probably had 3 or 4 total tables. I totally understand being hit all at once, hence our patience. But from there we waited around an hour and she never came over for our order. She passed by us several times, looked both my wife and I in the eye yet we couldn't flag her down. All the while taking orders from tables that arrived LONG after we did. Not sure what we did to upset her or if she was too busy to notice/care but additional servers would probably help. But waiting an hour to get an order in was too much. We paid cash for the 2 drinks & went to Hurricane Grill to watch the game- where we were greeted, served drinks & placed order within 10 minutes of arriving. The Gators did win so a small victory there, but sucked missing the first half due to changing...
