I was looking forward to a nice satisfying dinner after a long day of working and not eating anything. We decided to try Bushwallerâs and the reviews looked pretty good, despite seeing the Shepherdâs pie described on the menu â mashed potatoes and meat in a bread bowl?? Really?? The atmosphere was comfortable and the staff were attentive. We ordered the Scotch eggs as an appetizer. A Scotch egg is a hardboiled egg that is wrapped in sausage meat, rolled in bread crumbs and fried. What you get are two small eggs lightly smeared with sausage served with mustard. It was tasty, but I have to admit we expected them to be a little more substantial. For dinner, Michael ordered the corn and crab chowder. I ordered the corned beef and cabbage. As the food was brought to us I was about to tell the waitress I did not order any soup as a bowl was placed in front of me. The bowl contained small chunks of corned beef, some pieces of cabbage, chopped potatoes, carrots and celery in a broth. In my world this is a bowl of soup and not what I ordered. I do not know about you all, but what I expected to be on my âplateâ were slices of corned beef, some boiled potatoes and a chunk of cabbage. I thought at first I misread the description on the menu, but I looked it up again and this is what it reads: Slow cooked corned beef, potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, house-made soda bread. Do not get me wrong it was tasty and yes I did eat it, but I was pissed. I only ate it as I was tired, hungry and did not want to make a scene. Michaelâs soup was fine. While we waited to get our check and leave, I noticed the other table had ordered the shepherdâs pie. From what I could see you get a bread bowl, a big hunk of mashed potatoes piled on top with not a lot of meat inside. Also, no one seemed to be eating their fries. Just saying. If you do not mind paying $14 for a bowl of soup then this is the place for you. What we had did taste fine, but we felt cheated for what we received and paid for. Thank goodness there are other restaurants in Frederick, because we will not be going back here again. BTW â we have been to Ireland and know what real Irish fare should look...
Read moreBushwaller's is one of my FAVORITE venues in downtown Frederick.đ€©Through the years Bushwaller's has kept that hometown feel, kinda like that bar in Boston đ"where everyone knows your name"đ. As Bushwaller's is a smaller venue, they do not take reservations. However, if you have a group of more than 6 people, call in advance and they'll do their best to accommodate seating for your party! The antique bar, the wall behind it, and the copper top smaller bar in the back are antiques. In conjunction with the staff they create a consistent warm and inviting atmosphere. While many other restaurants downtown are closed one day a week, usually Mondays, Bushwaller's is not! They usually have entertainment of some type 6 nites a week. This includes, aside from the great patrons, live music, karaoke, and trivia night. On Friday and Saturday nights they usually have live music. After 9 p.m. there is a cover charge. It is between $3 to $5 per person. When I've been there and they've had live music, I've always enjoyed the band. Myself, I'm not a dart player, but they do have two dart boards đ that attract many players. They have beer on tap with the system that was originally installed by Guinness! Who knows more about beer than Guinness! Well I'm not a whiskey drinker I understand their selection is top of the line and excellent in the choices they provide. The current owner, I only know her by her first name, Amber has done a fantastic job. The menu she has perfected presents a refined Irish / American selection. Her attention to excellence and detail~from the kitchen to the wait staff and ultimately the plate in front of your face is apparent from your very first bite. I favor the fish and chips and the bangers n mash. A great treat for Sunday brunch as well. No matter the night I've always found it's a great place to relax, have a...
Read moreTook advantage of the Frederick Restaurant Week deals and decided to try this place since we drive past it quite often.  The crab pretzel was delicious - the crab dip on the top was really good!  My boyfriend had the Crab and Corn Chowder which had a spicy kick to it but he finished it.  For our entrees, I had the lobster macaroni and cheese (Restaurant week special) and he had the Dublin Dog.  The macaroni and cheese was good but a bit soupy for my taste.  He liked the Dublin Dog as well.  We were so full from the appetizers that we took half of our portions to go and the desserts to go as well (Irish Whiskey Cake and Strawberry Shortbread) that we have yet to try.
The atmosphere was very cozy and our waitress was very kind and attentive. Â Two thumbs up!
Went again 4/13
So we visited Bushwaller's again on a busy Friday night and it was amazing!! Â Even though it was very busy and crowded, the staff managed to find my boyfriend and I a table. Â I ordered the crab pretzel which was so delicious that it may be my new favorite appetizer. Â He ordered the crab and corn chowder which he said was satisfying as well. Â For our entrees, he ordered the bangers and mash that he found very tasty but he had to box the rest. Â I ordered the pot pie and it was also delicious! Â The pastry to meat ratio was perfect - I also had to box it up.
Probably the absolutely best part was our server Liv! Â She was so friendly and engaging! Â My boyfriend's half-and-half drink was always replaced with a refill and she constantly checked on us despite the many other diners. Â It's rare to find people in the service industry that are genuine and Liv really was! Â We will definitely...
