Personally, it is very difficult for me to find restaurants to try in this area. I'm from Las Vegas, so if a place is good, they'd have thousands of reviews. So we decided to make a reservation to Tavern West on Christmas eve as it was our travel day. Didn't really expect much other than I see they served duck and I love duck.
It's located right off a main road but the entrance is actually in the back of the building along with parking. The restaurant is an intimate affair with fewer than 20 tables.
We ordered the following:
Truffle Tater tots Smoked salmon spinach dip Tomato bisque Elk medallion Pappardelle Bolognese Vietnamese coffee cake
I consider myself hard to impress when it comes to food, I thought every single item was made to perfection. Every single detail was designed with thoughts. For example, the dip was served with slices of baguette and carrots and celery. I don't recall being served carrots and celery with spinach dip but the combo was perfect. The lightness of the carrots and celery compliment the heaviness of dip. Why hasn't this been thought of before?
The Bolognese was something that took us by surprise. My partner and I travel 4 hours to Scottdale for this lasagna with Bolognese and we think it's the best ever. But Tavern West has it beat.
The Tater tots will change your life. Such a rudimentary and unassuming dish that gets dressed up and can be served at a formal dinner party.
While everything was delicious, you must try the vietnamese coffee cake. Being a baker myself, I'm rarely impressed with restaurant desserts. But this one takes the cake, pun intended. A chiffon cake layered with a coffee buttercream icing. It was light and creamy at the same time and not overly sweet. It was heavenly.
We also ordered the Honey Bee and I was recommended the Breckenridge drink(I forget the name). My Breckenridge cocktail was absolutely delicious.
I highly recommend Tavern West. We love it so much we made another reservation before our trip home!...
Read moreThe food was good. Interesting half sports bar/half dining room with a fireplace atmosphere. My boyfriend and I ordered lamp chops and the special, a tri tip. I asked if the tri tip could be done rare, as I really don’t like my steaks over cooked. Our waitress (who was phenomenal) assured me that the chef will have no trouble with that. The food comes out, everything does taste great, however the steak is very clearly done medium (lots of brown with a small pink center). She asks how it is, we tell her it’s good, but she can tell I’m disappointed with the steak. She agrees with me that it’s far over cooked, and takes a piece to show the chef. She then lets us know that they souse vide the steaks to rare, then throw them on the grill, so getting a rare steak really isn’t possible. Not sure why the chef didn’t let her know when she put the order in that there’s no way it could be done like that. Regardless, I don’t want to waste a perfectly good steak so I tell her don’t worry about it we will still enjoy the meal. She feels bad, and offers to comp my next glass of wine ($14). I’m more than happy with that. We finish eating and the bill comes. She lets me know that whoever was in change wouldn’t let her comp the wine after all, but would take 25% off of the steak ($8). I thought that was really, really bizarre. As the difference is literally $6, I don’t care and we pay the bill and leave. Because it’s only $6. That just left a bad taste in our mouth. This place is fine, but seems like if $6 is too much to compromise to let someone leave happy, especially after I didn’t ask for a replacement steak, then what else are they skimping on? We spent about $170 in there for 2 entrees, dessert, and 3 drinks. We visit the area often, there are plenty of restaurants to chose from, we...
Read moreOur visit to Tavern West in Frisco was a last minute decision. We called in at 6PM and were lucky to garner a 7:30 reservation. We were seated at 7:45 at a lovely table near the fireplace. The ambience was nice in spite of the poor acoustics making it quite noisy. We started out with an octopus appetizer served tempura style. It was tasty but not quite warm. My dinner partner ordered the Snapper with miso sauce and she said it was quite tasty. Paired with a Franciscan Chardonnay that was pleasing as well. I ordered the Kobe steak, rare. It looked spectacular upon arrival paired with a creamy mashed potatoes and fresh al dente green beans. The steak was inedible, due to it being as chewy as leather and had to be sawed thru with several strokes of a serrated knife. It was easily the toughest piece of beef served to me in 2018. After sending that dish back I opted for the filet mignon, rare. The cut was paired with delightful scalloped potatoes and baby carrots. There were a few mushrooms in this dish that contained either grit or sand, which was very evident upon chewing. Once again, the quality of this meat was disappointing , with the flavor and texture closer to choice than prime. But it was edible and I was famished as it was now 8:30pm. The entire visit was exasperated by our waitress, a mid fifties blonde named Becky. Her smart aleck comments, poor attitude and lack of patience easily outweighed the poor quality of beef served here. Her service was a total mismatch in a restaurant of this calibre. I never ask for an accommodation, discount or free items. In this visit, since the meat was inedible I asked that it be taken off the bill, which they did. This place should be crossed off your “must" list...
