I love love love this place! It's one of a handful of favorite eateries for my husband & I on the island. Super unique, dive bar like kinda atmosphere here.. the walls & things hung up on them, the designs & style of everything, the whole place is just quirky, cozy & personable. The menu is extensive, very unique & well priced. They have a little bit of everything here kinda but they put their own spin on it kinda here... Everything is what it says on the menu, but they just have their own style, flavor & taste here with everything they cook. They have fresh sweets up at the front to grab which I love. They make fresh coffee here with a little cafe menu & have extensive customizable options for the coffee which they make fresh upon ordering. Their coffee menu options are extremely unique, super delicious & I've loved every single one & tried every single one. If you like sweet, fun, cute coffee this is definitely a go to spot on island... Their biscuits & gravy are one of my top five favorites on the island to get, I absolutely love their biscuits & gravy spin - as like I said, they have their own style of doing every dish pretty much, it's always a little unique of a taste even on traditional dishes like this one. I've heard often that this is a spot known to readily oblige dietary restrictions, food allergies & eating preferences & such also, I know I've heard that a lot & swear I've seen multiple things on the menu referencing things like vegan or organic or gluten free, but I have no restrictions myself so not sure how much they cater to that kinda thing per se... with the experiences I've had there i would go ahead & bet that's probably correct as they seem like a pretty progressive, hip & "all are equal" kinda place... Would be surprised to hear anything discriminatory or politically incorrect coming from the practices or behaviors here. They are good for breakfast lunch or dinner for sure, they do great for all three. Their prices are great, the amounts of food are good, service is always awesome, the vibe is super chill, always plenty of parking & the location is easy to find & get to being off 61st like. They can get pretty busy - not uncommon to see a line out the door, but seem to manage the high volume well & have had surprisingly low wait times for the amount of people there the few times I have waited to sit here. The place is locally owned from what I've known & the woman I've been told owns it seems very hands on & I have seen her there often working alongside the employees & talking to customers a lot herself. I love the creativity & uniqueness that went into the menu & atmosphere here & will always prefer, support & promote local spending in communities so that's always a major plus for me. For a unique, not too expensive, local & high quality eatery I would highly recommend Gypsy Joynt! It's pretty much a staple here - would def say any local has heard of it or been there. Five stars!...
Read moreIt's been a good, long minute since I have had a memorable, craveable, experience at a restaurant. My daughter and I went to the Gypsy Joynt this weekend to sample the catering menu for her wedding. My expectations were fairly low. We walked in and were immediately greeted by friendly staff. It smelled amazing inside and there were some seriously impressive baked goods displayed. We were sat at a table quickly and then they began to bring out the selections for our tasting. We tried a Banana Bread appetizer, Roast Chicken with Veggies, Pot Roast, Honeyed Carrots, Cajun Rice, and Shrimp and Grits. My daughter and I started with the chicken. I mean... It's roast chicken for a catering order. I expected something perfectly "fine". Like Boston Market-esque. What we had was a religious experience. It was probably some of the best chicken I've ever put in my mouth. It was definitely some of the best FOOD I have ever put in my mouth. It's entirely possible that a soul or two was sold to a Voodoo priestess in exchange for the talent in that kitchen. Everything we ate was amazing. I told my daughter that people might not talk about her wedding decor, and they might not talk about the entertainment, and they might not talk about the venue... But they will DEFINITELY talk about the FOOD! Before we left, I bought a selection of the baked goods that they sold at the counter, and I would be lying if I said I ever had a better cinnamon roll. It was bigger than my face! I waited until the next day to try it, as we were so full from our luncheon, so I expected it to be slightly stale, and that would be fine; but the roll was tender and flakey, the thick frosting was sweet and creamy without being cloying, and there was a crystalized, buttery, cinnamon-y bottom that made you want to eat this thing upside down. I was able to eat about 1/6 of it before I was stuffed, and my whole office smells like a hug from a grandma. Do not miss an opportunity to try this place. Don't waste your time on fried frozen food at the sea wall. If you want to remember your trip to Galveston, Tx, RUN to the Gypsy Joynt and eat ALL...
Read moreLooking for a place to dine in Galveston presents lots of opportunities, as one would expect on an island known for its tourism. The choices are many but finding the right one when you have vegetarians and vegans in your ranks can be a challenge. One place that satisfied us all is Gypsy Joynt Café in Galveston.
Gypsy Joynt Café features a counter- ordering system and seat yourself procedure. The menus are right there, as you enter. You grab one, place an order at the counter and pay, then take a number back to your seat. They will bring your food to the table when it’s ready.
The atmosphere at Gypsy Joynt Café is fun and not like most others. There are pictures on the walls, flags, dream catchers, peace symbols, and other objects hanging from the ceiling, and even video games and pinball machines. You may find yourself looking around more than usual at this restaurant, as there is so much visual appeal.
With the food, they have several veggie sandwiches and if you order a burger, you can select a plant- based patty if you prefer. The sandwiches are large in size and the side options are plentiful, too. I ordered a brisket sandwich with a side of tator tots and I left feeling quite full. The soft drinks are self- serve so you can go back and get more if you like.
I liked the food and love the atmosphere at Gypsy Joynt Café. My only issue is the amount of time it took to get served our food. I checked the time and it took around 40 minutes before it was delivered to our table. Maybe they were short staffed at that time? I’m not sure, but it took longer than it should have.
I love making trips to Galveston and I love the different dining options the island offers. Gypsy Joynt Café is a groovy place that deserves a look. Whether you have vegetarians/vegans with you or not, it’s a cool restaurant with an atmosphere you...
