Double Dragon has a bit of a status among geeks and gaming enthusiasts in Colorado based on its name, doubly so since it’s located in Gunnison, a town that, while not exactly small, does have a reputation for being secluded away. I have passed by a half dozen times in 12 years. I decided to give it a go, and per the posted request of the restaurant, I am leaving an honest review.
There are familiar comforts that, for me, stand this establishment out from any other local Chinese-style resteraunts in the state. The owners greet guests with genuine love and excitement. There is heart in the entire experience, which to me, elevates this rating higher than similar establishments who off almost the exact same food experience. As far as the fare itself, most of the food I indulged was almost the same you would find everywhere else. I will say I could sense craft and care in my wanton appetizer. They weren’t of a frozen bag quality; sizzling golden brown, with fresh onion and crab incorporated with the cheese mixture. The sweet and sour sauce was a thin, crafted style sauce, not the thick red syrup one would find in many other of the same establishments, in Colorado; a standout that I deeply appreciated. I had the Hunan Beef, requested at regular spice. One does have the option to have spicy dishes (clearly designated in the menu) altered to preferred heat preferences.
With acknowledgement to the good things I encountered, I must say in fair critique that the only dissapointment (albeit very minor) was that the fried rice seemed a bit rushed. No evenness in its saturation, essentially just thrown on grill with zero regard to presentation or value and served in a small box. The Hunan Beef, presentation-wise, did not stand out, but was most delicious, and well portioned for the price.
I can’t say this place is road-trip worthy, by any stretch of bragging rights for NES and Arcade game fans. But, if you are already going to Gunnison, and are in the market for either a solid local sit-down establishment or take-out, I encourage considering Double Dragon. They’ve been a cornerstone for the town since 2002. As far as the available local eateries are concerned, it’s welcome comfort food. And Gunnison knows a thing or two about its comfort foods.
If you’re passing through, and wanna drop coin on some yum Chinese food, I encourage...
Read moreDouble Dragon is an absolute gem in Gunnison! From start to finish, our meal was nothing short of spectacular. We ordered the hot and sour soup, crispy fried duck, Kung Pao beef, Kung Pao chicken, and chop suey—and every single dish was bursting with flavor.
The hot and sour soup was perfectly balanced, with just the right amount of tang and heat. The crispy fried duck was cooked to perfection—golden, crunchy on the outside and tender inside, easily one of the best we’ve had anywhere. Both the Kung Pao beef and chicken had that classic bold, savory kick, loaded with fresh vegetables and peanuts, and were seasoned beautifully. The chop suey rounded everything out with a comforting mix of textures and flavors that made the whole meal feel complete.
On top of the delicious food, the portions were generous, the service was warm and friendly, and the atmosphere made for an inviting dining experience. If you’re looking for authentic, flavorful Chinese food in Gunnison, Double Dragon should be at the top of your list!

Read moreRan into this place looking for a place to eat after dropping off a friend at the airport. The pink color peaked my interest and Chinese food sounded nice and warm. We walked into the restroom around 1 and we got a little nervous because the room looked a little disheveled. We sat down and ordered the family dinner which involved a variety of appetizers (beef on a stick, chicken wings, crab Rangoon’s, and egg rolls. The beef on the stick had to have been my favorite thing there. The meal also came with a choice of soup we got egg drop and wonton which also exceeded expectations. We had a choice of white or fried rice with our entree. We got the general tsos chicken, sesame chicken, and three meat options. Each exceeded expectations and were a bang for your buck only $17.50 for each person for all that food! Overall...
