Our second visit meant to be a perfect lunch for our pre anniversary but this restaurant went from being a 10/10 to 1/10 in just over a month. I seriously don't know what to say.
Our waitress seemed lost. She didn't even ask if we wanted a la carte or AYCE. When we said AYCE she seemed surprised. There were 5 side dish served and it was lesser items than what we had experienced the first time. There was no japchae and mashed potato and some other items.
Sauces were different as well. We loved the green sauce and the salsa from the first time but now they changed to yum yum sauce, mysterious dark soy sauce, and red chili sauce. This is not a hibachi restaurant I don't need yum yum sauce.
I asked the manager and explained that we were here on the grand opening but today everything had changed. He explained that they just changed chef and despite not being a "Michelin Star chef" he's still very good. Excuse me, I didn't expect a Michelin Star chef in a KBBQ restaurant in the first place. I told him that side dishes were not the same as well as the sauces and he said they're out of the sauces at the moment and side dishes changed everyday. He then asked what I wanted and he grabbed a Korean lady to explain to me and from what I understand she said I had to order it but if I wanted it as a side dish in AYCE then they don't have it. What?!
Despite all of the concerns I addressed to him calmly he didn't even apologize and didn't offer anything else. He just wanted to rush off. The whole time we were eating there he tended to talk to Caucasian customers more and spent longer time listening to their praises rather than listening to concerns raised from an Asian person.
Corn cheese was served hot and ready to eat in a hot pan first time and was really big. Now it's served in a tiny tin foil bowl and you have to put it on a grill yourself. Don't even mention the taste. It was horrible.
I don't have to work in a restaurant to know that this issue is not about changing chef but instead it's them reducing the cost. The green sauce was made from avocado so them not serving it anymore is an obvious reason of cost reduction.
We won't come back anymore.
Old review
Hands down the best KBBQ in the area. We went on the grand opening around 11.30 am. The interior is really beautiful and modern. High ceiling and better lighting make the atmosphere feel more open. Other restaurants tend to make it cozy by using less light but to me it makes me feel trapped. Ventilation is great we left without smelling like a grilled pork belly lol
Food was amazing. We did AYCE which is $37/pax and there's only one peice (no lunch or dinner prices) Meat cut was good and was fresh and good quality. The AYCE menu is mainly pork and beef but there are salmon, shrimp and squid as well. You can order 3 items per time and the portion is really big for brisket. Pork belly came as 2 long pieces. Salmon came 1 piece at the time though but it was super fresh.
The appetizers they gave reminded me of Korean restaurants I've been to in Asia which means you are in an authentic KBBQ place. The salad dressing was so fine. It gave tangy and a little bit sweet and it was so refreshing eating after a few bites of grilled meat.
The dipping sauces were so good as well. I loved the green sauce which maybe made of avocado according to our server. The red spicy sauce was actually spicy so beware of that. Chimchuri was also a good sauce to clean out your tongue. Ponzu sauce was also great.
Service was top notch. We had Leo looking after us and he offered to cut the meat for us several times. He was very attentive and super friendly as he smiled all the time when talking to us. As it was the grand opening day we saw owners there checking on every table and it reassured me that the quality of this meal would be great and I wasn't disappointed at all.
It was a couple of bucks more expensive than KPOT and the AYCE items are not as diverse but the quality is way better.
We will definitely be...
Read moreMy husband wanted to give them two stars, so here we go. So, starting off the waitress kept giving me unsweetened tea. And it had a hair in it or some kind of fibre. I took it out, wasn't a big deal to me. She saw me fishing for it lol and was nice and took it back for a new one. But when refilling my drink at the end, she gave me unsweetened.... Again. Husband thought the food was mediocre. It was okay to me. Not bad but lacking on flavor a lot. I've had more flavor at other Korean BBQ so it was a little bit of a let down. But the main reason for the low review is the manager or owner kept bugging us... And it was strange. He randomly came to our table and threw all of my bulgogi on the grill when I was cooking my chicken... He just started cooking the food.... We know how to cook our own food. That's the whole point of the experience. Husband said it took everything in him not to blank on the guy.
He later came by while I was eating asking me if our teokbokki was too spicy. No, it's not spicy. We got our appetizer when we were almost done eating everything and we did the "All you can eat". So, we focused on finishing food we couldn't take home vs appetizer you can get a box for. And I've just had better teokbokki from places like K-stop or H-mart.... It wasn't cooked long enough. I eat spicy Korean and Indian food all the time; the hottest it can get. Mind you, I'm pregnant and eating slow. He comes by again staring and asks if I'm okay when rubbing my belly. I'm sure he meant well by asking these things. I think he was gloating assuming I couldn't handle the heat and having tummy aches. But OBVIOUSLY PREGNANT. I got this. Just leave us be. We're okay. I'm eating the hot pot that I don't want to be charged for leaving excess food. You brought out the appetizer 45 minutes of us being seated.
THEEEEEN he became annoying again. And tried cutting my husband's chicken. He's not asking when he messes with our food. He comes by and just starts grabbing and touching. Doesn't ask. Husband was like “I got it. Thank you.”
Husband didn't like how employees struggled turning on our grill. And the employees go behind each other constantly checking grills, which is good I guess. But also funny to watch when one employee just checked 10 seconds ago and another come up and fiddle again lol Anyways. All the servers were super sweet and nice but they were all overwhelmed. Very busy. One server did come by and started flipping food that was fine. Without asking....
Please, don't mess with people's food when it's not asked for. It's not okay. And don't try to cut your customer's food like they're toddlers. Who does that??? I didn't hate it. It was okay. Soup was good. There was a lot of fat on the bulgogi.... I do still enjoy KPot more. Here you get sides instead of choosing your veggies and it's very limited. This is more traditional. Husband did not like it and he had a lot of expectations and dragged me to go. His main complaint was that owner not going to anyone else's table touching their food. Was not okay... This man was Korean. Not the nice Lenin guy everyone...

Experience: Two grills at the table with ample small portion apps or traditional Koran food such as salad, kimchi flavored XYZ and various pickled options.
They do have full bar service so if you're looking for a good time with food and drink, this place will service you well.
You get 3 sauces, a bowl of liquid to dip your food in, rice, soup, etc etc. Plenty of options here but not as many sauce options as KPOT. I would have liked to have Soy Sauce at the table but that wasn't an option at the time.
There is also a ramen wall where you can make your own ramen and the all you can eat package we got included one cup of self-service ramen for everyone. Mainstream ramen options and maybe 5-10 in total options.
Service was pretty great overall. Attentive, happy to help, and Lenny kept coming by to check on us and make everyone laugh and have a good time. Not sure their role in the operation but Lenny was certainly a standout individual.
Only negative was that our order was split between one half of the table (5 people) and the other half and a few things got mixed up and we got a few meat items we did not order. Overall, I don't think it was a big deal as we ate everything and adjusted accordingly.
Price: Our party got the all you can eat for ~$38 a person. If you get this option, everyone at the table has to get it. Otherwise, the portions have a wide range from $15 - $60+ depending on what you get. Gratuity was included for a big party, which is always the case so don't be surprised.
Parking: Ample and not an issue.
Atmosphere: Honestly, smaller venue than I thought it would be. Music was Korean inspired from what I can recall, there might be spots for 20-25 parties overall? Not sure what the outdoor and upstairs options are as they were closed when we went.
Overall: Happy to have a place like this in Highpoint / Jamestown area. It works well across the street from the ramen place and sushi buffet, or maybe catch a movie afterwards as well. Elephant in the room, how does this compare to another offering in the area such as KPOT? Well, I think the food is better here but you might pay a bit more of a premium. KPOT seems a little easier for big parties due to the self service nature and variety of sauces that you can customize your food with. This place is much more authentic in their offering than an...
