China Castle Restaurant — Restaurant in Honesdale

6 of us were visiting the area for the long weekend and decided based on the reviews to choose China castle for takeout. We rely on Google reviews for many things in our lives so we wanted to leave our view on the food which we're sad to do.

First we will call out that the staff were very friendly and the service was efficient. The food however was disappointing albeit hot.

We called in advance and were told that the food would be ready in 15minutes, which at the time felt too fast to cook the volume of food we had ordered. But we figured it must just be efficient and they weren't busy. We had ordered several chow meins with varying additions of meats/vegetables, we also had several lo meins, rice, sweet+sour chicken, jumbo shrimp, egg rolls, prawn toast, snow peas + water chestnuts and lastly a broccoli side (which was missing when we got home). Unfortunately all the food was very bland and lacked the depth and consistency that you expect from a Chinese takeaway. The egg rolls were over fried and all the chow/lo meins were lacking flavour. The chow meins were sloppy and all the ingredients had a very soft consistency which is far from what we expected. The vegetable chow mein was quite soft and lacked crunch. It would appear that the food was not freshly made and it's hard to see which ingredients touched a wok/frying pan, which makes sense given all the food was piping hot as if it has been microwaved, especially given the 15minute turnaround.

In the end the +2 stars are for the friendly staff, and that the food was safe and edible. Dropping 3 stars because of the lack of flavours, food didn't seem like it touched a pan and the texture was mainly sloppy throughout. We spent ~$80...

I didn't get a chance to snap a photo of our takeout order because my mouth was salivating too much from the intoxicating aroma eminating from the Togo bag! I ordered 2 platters the first being shrimp lo mein w pork fried rice that came with my choice of soup (wonton or egg drop) and the second being general tsos chicken with pork friend rice w choice of soup. The meals were both incredibly FRESH and juicy! The rice was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked! Our meals came with 2 spring rolls, hot tea, chips w dip, cutlery, and sauces all for less then $24! The service is always phenomenal at this location and staff is always so accommodating/hospitable! I can't speak highly enough on this gem in Honesdale, give this place a try and I PROMISE you will not regret it! The meal I had at China Castle was the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. Each part of my meal was juicy and tasty, to the point of me going out of my comfort zone and try a mushroom in my dish, which I usually avoid and dislike. Even when it was something I normally do not enjoy, the food was amazing. The water chestnuts in my dish we're not too hard or too soft, the one bite of sweet and sour combo amazed me with the tempura batter, somehow being absolutely perfect. It was like the sweet and sour chicken I had growing up was somehow made wrong, and I was awoken to a perfected meal. My one regret is discovering such meal right before their day of the week off.
