This has been one of my favorite restaurants in honolulu for a long time. Normaly, I would have given it 4 or 5 stars for the food because their food is very well cooked. In general they have a decent lunch and discountplanned and they offer a very wide wide range of cooking styles. The first time I went, there was back when they were offering lobster for about $10 for the smaller lobster. If you ordered another regular dish, not a discounted dish. That's how long it's been now. That same lobster costs twenty five dollars. I hadn't had lobster in a while and recently I saved up a lot of money to give myself a birthday present of one of their lovely lobster dishes. I was actually horrified by some of the slopiest cooking i've ever seen and I never would have expected it from this restaurant. I didn't complain at the time because I was actually in shock. Both dishes I ordered were not made correctly! I thought I had to be wrong. But I wasn't and when I took home, what was left of the lobster , It was covered in a sludge of corn flour thickened liquid that was tasteless and was like having paste all over the lobster ... really bad. Sadly, although I've gone to this restaurant for so many years, because I did not complain immediately, when I was served the lobster, there was nothing they would do. If I had complained immediately, they would have taken it away and brought me another one. My other dish was shrimp soft egg on rice. It was not made correctly either and came out like a tasteless soup, not like an egg based thickened sauce. In a restaurant like this, the people who run it are not interested in repairing the damage after the fact. They will only fix it in the moment. So right now, I can recommend almost anything on the menu, except never order lobster in the supreme sauce or what they call their garlic butter sauce. There is no garlic in it. There is no butter in it. There is corn starch mixed with some kind of obscure liquid that has no flavor. So it was basically unacceptable in every possible way. Maybe the other preparations are better. But everything else, including the house made kimche is fantastic. My favorite lunch is the roast duck with rice, or the beef...
Read moreLobster King has long been a favorite of mine for their cheap lobster. Though the price of their lobster has gone up (now $14.95, up from $10) this still remains a solid spot to get some delicious Chinese (and Korean) favorites. Peking Duck - Delicious and cooked to perfection. Crispy skin, good amount of meat, comes complete with the buns, green onions, sauce and shrimp chips! Lobster - we had the special sauce (butter garlic) and black bean sauce, both of which were delicious but a little messy. I've heard the salt & pepper is less messy. Fried Rice - the garlic seafood fried rice was delicious. The dried scallop egg white was a little more plain... just salty; I prefer my fried rice to stand more on it's own. Mandoo - delicious; not the best I've ever had but the texture was nice and it came with a dipping sauce and a little kimchi! Lemon Chicken - unfortunately this wasn't very good. The sauce was okay but the batter for the chicken wasn't good; it leaves both a bad taste and texture in your mouth... too much flour? The walnut shrimp kind of had the same quality... Service - our server was rather friendly. Some other reviews complain about the service but that may be because it was during the dinner rush; we went during lunch. My main complaint is that despite being a somewhat new restaurant, it is a bit dirty... I saw a tiny cockroach and some roach droppings on the windowsill as well. It's not the dirtiest Chinese restaurant I've ever been to but they lose a star for that. Overall a good experience; highly recommended for Chinese food and/or...
Read moreDespite the poor reviews, I thought Lobster King was a great place for fresh lobsters at a good price. Came in with a group of 7 on a Thursday night and the place was packed. We had to wait for 10 mins before being seated. Once at the table, the servers had hot tea, waters and menus for us right away. Their menu is quite extensive with plenty of variety at decent prices. Tonight we decided on a 4.5 lbs lobster (84$ at 18.95$/lb) cooked in their house special sauce over fried noodles, braised abalone with black mushrooms (17.95$), garlic fish fillet (16.95$) and young chow fried rice (11.95$). The fresh lobster was picked and showed to us before being cooked to make sure that it was fresh. The food took approximately 10 mins to prepare and I was in awe when the food arrived. The lobster was exceptional and tasted amazing. You can taste the freshness of the lobster and their house special sauce was spot on. The fish, abalone and fried rice was equally amazing with the portion size being very generous. It was definite worth the price that’s listed on the menu. The service was on point tonight. The servers took great care of us and got us everything that we wanted. I highly recommend Lobster King to anyone that comes to Hawaii looking for good seafood. These guys really know how to prepare seafood at...
