Up Roll Café Honolulu — Restaurant in Honolulu

let me start by saying that we discovered this restaurant in Kailua and fell in love with the food and the staff. they were attentive to my dietary restrictions (gluten free) and told me the items I could and could not have. they were super accommodating when I ran out of fish and wanted to add some more too. I did expect that coming to the same restaurant but in Honolulu/Kaka'ako we would have a similar experience but the person at the register was limited in English, I suspect she was a native Japanese speaker, and she did not seem to understand what I ordered and the bowl that came out had gluten crunchies on top which are an add on. I worried that they would just take them off and give it back which is what I think did happen. I let them know I would get sick if there was anything left of the gluten and now I am limping and in pain all over bc I believe that they would not let the person who was assembling the bowls make me a fresh one which was actually gluten free. I am hoping that the pain in my muscles and joints only lasts a day or 2. Fortunately we only paid a lot of money to come be here for vacation (sarcasm heavy, yes). I was not offered a receipt so I have no idea what she actually charged me for but it ended up $27 and change. For all I know I was actually charged for an add on that is poisoning me right now. Do visit the location in Kailua though, it is stellar.

Update 11/5/24. The pain from my gluten bombing lasted my entire trip and past getting home. Honestly, other than the shopping center called Salt, being a tourist and walking around this area was sketchy as hell. Don't walk by the park after dark. Even walking in the daylight raised my hackles but my point is don't bother with this location of Up Roll bc it does not compare at all to the Kailua location. In Kailua, you will not have the involuntary up-sell that makes you sick even though you tell the staff that you will definitely get sick. I think most people can agree that getting up-sold is just annoying regardless. My bowl plus a (less than 5 ppm gluten)beer was well past $20 which would be fine but the whole experience was...

Ok, so the hard reality is that Up Roll Café in Honolulu is pretty much my favourite place on the planet, but unfortunately it's a 10 hour flight away. Never has Hawaii felt so far, as when I'm craving one of these stunning sushi burittos. Honestly, this place is THAT good.

My friendrecently found Up Roll on Instagram & while in Hawaii last month, we made it our mission in life to walk here.

Over the course of 16 nights we ate here 3 times, the last jaunt was in complete despair on our way to the airport. Yep, we both bought an 'Ahi Lovers Roll' to take on the flight home to Sydney. Screw you airplane food!

After working my way around the menu a few times, the Ahi Lovers Roll remains my steadfast favourite. I ordered this twice with a decent amount of extras including, avocado, Japanese basil, cilantro, pickles & inari skin which worked to soak up the sesame sauce really nicely.

The ordering experience here is unique, much like the food concept which allows you to tailor the roll to your own taste. The menu is designed checklist style & allows you to choose additional extras to add to your desired roll. Possible options include a roll or a bowl, type of rice/quinoa, sauce & toppings. The combinations are endless.

There's genuinely not enough ridiculously wonderful things I can say about this place, just thinking about it makes me hungry & fills my heart with a longing that only a great ocean can create by its divide.

... Hell, next time we're both buying t-shirts from these guys so we can let our inner 'Up Roll...
