Now I will preface this by saying that while I was a little disappointed by a couple of things, overall the experience and the food, aesthetic was worth 5 stars so I didn't feel like docking the last star. I do hope when I go back, the things that were lacking are there!
The food, delicious and different! Honestly I'm a white girl, some spices are hit or miss for me... but the aroma of the food brought me in, the bright colors, the sound of the dishes listed. Disappointing moment 1- no fries. This was a tough one, as half the menu has it as the main or the side. They offered substitutes to make up for it but I REALLY wanted to try some, next time! I ordered the Loco Loco- this is one of their jasmine rice dishes! Mmmmm! The smells again soo good, I got it to go and took everything to leave it til I got home lol it also came with 2 of their pork rolls which were yummy! Great beef, eggs cooked the way I ordered and the rice was moist, the gravy was a good blend of flavors I couldn't tell you and enough heat for me to notice, not too much I couldn't enjoy! I also ordered the ice cream hamburger! This was odd, but a good yummy odd. Lol ube & vanilla ice cream, toasted steam bun to give it some crisp & salt, condensed milk for sweetness. It wasn't pretty looking, which was meh- but fun & flavors were there. I originally wanted the flan, which they were out of. It happens. Anyways staff was kind and fun and friendly, apologized and felt bad for the shortages-- I think they were great and doing what they could! Will go back! I must try...
Read moreFantastic restaurant! My friends and I tried to find the restaurant the first day we were in Houston for a conference, only we found it a challenge to discover because it is actually in the tunnel system below downtown! You can't really use GPS directions when you have to navigate the tunnels!
That being said, 2 days later we made a more expertly planned attempt to find the restaurant, and it was everything we had hoped for! The restaurant is Filipino inspired foods, with a lot of American flavors melded with the Asian traditional inspirations! The burgers were juicy with buns that were crisp and even had mustard placed on them in the shape of the word love and a heart! My own meal was a more traditional Filipino dinner, called lechon kawali, which is a fried pork belly meal with garlic seasoned rice, lettuce, and chives!
To top it off, two of us ordered something called a Halo Halo, which is an ice cream and fresh fruit combination, along with coconut shavings and crushed ice! The flavors were exquisite and unique in a way that can't be compared to a chain ice cream store!
The chef and waitstaff were happy to oblige our touristy goofiness, and even got in on the fun of pictures that we took while we were there!
If you're able to find it, go to Flip N Patties! You're not gonna...
Read moreThis place was fantastic. This was our first stop in Houston and we were not disappointed. I had the Flipnpatty Burger and Flores de Mayo fries. The burger was cooked wonderfully, and had a variety of flavors from the mushroom, cheeses and sauces but was matched if not bested by the fries. These fries were perfect. Salty, sweet, creamy, crunchy and umami all around. My significant other had the breakfast with chicharron and that was excellent, but would highly recommend with the sunny side egg. The hospitality from Mary the server and Kiko the cook was also amazing. They were incredibly vocal and friendly and made us feel immediately welcomed in Houston. The restaurant itself is in the Bank of America building so it’s easy to miss if you’re not a local. Probably coming back before my...
