I visited Moxie’s on August 4 with a group of coworkers.
Our waitress was continuously gone from the table for long periods of time. Our carafe of water was left empty for about 15 to 20 minutes and we had to ask for more water but after her taking the carafe she was gone for another 15 minutes and we had to flag down a gentleman cleaning tables to ask him to bring our water. He made the waitress aware and she finally returned with water for us.
I ordered a Thai curry, there was no mention of any spiciness on the menu or by the waitress. No one at the table seemed satisfied with their food but since we got there around 8:30 and did not receive any food until around 9:45 most people just tried to eat what tasted OK on their plate. The curry tasted like spicy milk with no other notes of flavor. I brought the spiciness to the attention of the waitress and instead of offering another solution her response was “well it’s Thai curry, it’s going to be spicy.” I’m not sure what she thought made Moxie’s curry so ‘authentic’ that it can’t have varying levels of spice like every Thai establishment I have been to… or that it should not be mentioned in the menu at all, but I was not a fan of her demeanor throughout the entire evening.
I settled on sending my food back and got a drink with gin in it. There were two types of gin in my drink and I was only familiar with one so I asked about what would happen if I only wanted the Empress 1908 gin in my drink instead of Empress AND Roku gin. I was told by the waitress that it was completely fine, but I got a surprise when I asked for my bill and they upped charged me $7 dollars on a $15 drink. I asked the waitress what the reason was for the up charge and her response was “Well, I told you you could do it “and I said “yes you said that I could change it out but you never mentioned that there would be an additional fee on top of the drink or that the alcohol’s were priced differently,” she did not respond.
I have never in my life decided not to tip a waitress but I was not about to tip 20% to someone who was continuously away from the table so much so that we had to ask other staff members to find, and who was not pleasant. I paid in cash and the manager came over to the table to ask about my lack of a tip, I provided him with all the reasons that I have mentioned above and he stated that he would take care of the situation but he did say “Of course there would be an up charge on the drink because Empress gin is more expensive than Roku.” I found his response to be funny because as a customer it’s not my job to know the price of every alcohol at the bar if a break down isnt presented on the drink menu, but if I ask a question of a member of staff I do expect a transparent response… Also if you look at the price of both of those gins there’s only a five dollar difference for full-size bottle. They are in the same price range, and for the cost of my drink I was only $10 shy of buying a full bottle of Empress from the store.
All in all I would say that I never intend to return to Moxie’s again. T environment was cute but it felt like it was meant to have more of a standard bar atmosphere than that of a up-scale restaurant & bar because the food was subpar and the crowd that the restaurant attracts seems to be very focused on looks and alcohol. We should have taken note that most other tables did not have food and if they did they did not eat much.
There was even a gentleman there who seem to be trying to work the crowd as he was ‘well-known (?)’ and I never expected to be trying to eat my dinner and have a random man approach my table after corralling a group of seven or eight girls at the bar and buying them drinks. I think this would be a great place to go if you were looking for an older gentleman to buy you dinner or a drink though, if that’s what...
Read moreWhaaat, Moxie's opened up a location in Houston?! I grew up in Canada eating at Moxie's since I was wee little child. To see it open up in the Galleria area recently, it brought back a lot of fond memories. I always remembered their classic "White Chocolate Brownie" from the dessert menu; it was always so warm... and when mixed in with cold ice cream, I always needed to close my eyes and pay my respects to the food gods. I've always liked this chain because you can get a great meal pretty late at night (up to midnight from Sunday-Wednesday and up to 2 am from Thursday-Saturday).
I went to their Galleria location for lunch on a weekday with my girlfriend. They offer free valet up until 4 pm (it is $5 afterwards). However, there is plenty of free parking available in the private lot since they share it with many other businesses in the area. The first thing I noticed was how fancy this Moxie's location was. Growing up, this place started off as a casual chain restaurant, but it seems like they have really upgraded their look and style, especially since they are located in the Galleria area.
They have a very nice main entrance with a beautiful outdoor patio. They have a lit-up sign at the front that says, "I will if you will," and it makes a really great photo opportunity. The main floor has a small lounge with a bar and many televisions. The hostess said she could seat us in their dining area upstairs on the 2nd floor. We walked up, and we were greeted by a 2nd hostess who then led us to our table.
The 2nd floor was incredible to see. There's another outdoor patio area on their huge balcony. They have another bar inside, and they even have a open kitchen concept behind large glass windows so you can see the chefs preparing your meal! The restaurant just screams premium quality.
After overlooking their menu, my girlfriend saw that they offered Poutine from their shareable appetizer menu for $9. If you don't know what this is, it's a classic Canadian way of preparing fries using hot beef gravy, cheese curds, and fresh chives. We don't really see this too often in Houston, so we had to order it. In addition to the poutine, we also ordered the Scottish Salmon (ancient grains, lemon herb sauce, and fresh seasonal vegetables) for $26 and the Red Thai Curry Bowl (stir-fried veggies, jasmine rice, curried-buttered naan, and chicken) for $18.50.
*Poutine - 4/5 - I enjoyed it. It's supposed to be somewhat salty, which it is, so keep an open mind when trying this!
*Scottish Salmon - 3/5 - This salmon was juicy, but it just tasted bland. I was expecting more, especially for this price.
*Red Thai Curry Bowl - 2/5 - This plate was awful. I have had this exact bowl in Canada, and it was much more flavorful there. The curry at this Galleria location was super watery, and it had no taste. Why such a big difference?! Don't order this here.
Overall, this is a beautiful restaurant. It has definitely upgraded its look and ambience since I was a kid, and the prices reflect this. I also love that they open quite late. However, the food didn't do it for me. I have always enjoyed Moxie's in Canada. In the Galleria, the food is bland, straight up. Moxie's, please step your spice game up! I hope to come back and relive my childhood with your White Chocolate Brownie one day soon. I really hope I won't be...
Read moreMe and my girlfriend did a weekend Girls out trip we stayed near Galleria and decided just to relax and eat at local restaurants.
Well what a mistake we made going to this Moxies. We first ordered the lettuce wraps for appetizers they came out they were horrible and cold . Instead of sending it back we chose to keep it but to cancel our entree food because we were not comfortable with ordering anything else.
So before our food comes out we tell our waitress that we want to cancel the orders. The waitress tells us the order has already been sent to the kitchen and will be ready in one minute so we can no longer cancel the order.
We let the waitress know we don’t want it so don’t bring it out the waitress goes get the food and bring it anyway and tells us sorry we can’t cancel the order.
Finally, the manager storms out address us very quickly and aggressively saying I understand you want to cancel your order and proceed to tells us the exact Same thing that we can’t!
The very rude manager also says you ordered it so now you have to pay for it ! I tell him we don’t want it and that I’ll pay for one but I already told the waitress we didn’t want it before she brought it out!
So this clown of a manager says yes you will pay of it or I’m calling the police. So now, I’m irritated and I tell him call them I already tired to compromise to agree to pay for one but now this clown is saying he’s calling the police on us when no crime has occurred.
I told him if he wants to waste tax payers dollars calling go right ahead he screams I will. I was so flabbergasted that this manager was sitting here causing this scene . Finally he brings out the ticket he has the appetizer and the one entree my friend gives him her tape card now he says I can’t take that I need the physical card we don’t take tape because you can dispute that. So now he is suggesting that we are scammers and will dispute it later . So luckily I had some petty cash on me was able to pay and even tip the waitress that did nothing $10
This was the worse racist unethical behavior I’ve ever experienced in a restaurant.
Never ever will I return! I also will be...
