I've been wanting to try WEG for a very long time. It's always been one of those places where I seem to make plans to go, and then something comes up or changes and I wind up not being able to make it. At last, I had an opportunity to grab carryout this week on Wednesday.
I ordered online by following a link I found from a Google search. It was pretty easy to do and I had no trouble making small additions to my order. It says there's no additional charge to order online, so I guess their prices have just changed. Their menu on their website says the item I ordered is about $8.50, but I paid about $12.50 for it.
At any rate, I've heard for years now that "Zach's tot roast" is legendary. It's tater tots covered in pot roast and gravy. The concept reminds me a bit of poutine. I figured I had to try that. I ordered the smaller portion and a sweet tea.
The inside of the restaurant is kind of nice; it reminds me of a Ruby Tuesday with a slightly stronger bar vibe (think dimly lit). There's a large fish tank with lots of pretty fish inside. That's unique and kind of fun.
When I arrived, the hostess instructed me to head to the bar and ask the bartender for my order. No problem. There was one person ahead of me and he was fairly busy, so I browsed on my phone while I waited. One of the wait staff knocked into my shoulder while I was standing there waiting. I feel bad for not being more aware of my surroundings and getting out of the way, but at the same time, a simple excuse me would've gotten me to move quite easily, or at least would have soothed my annoyance if they'd waited til after the fact.
Regardless, after that, my food was delivered to me without much of a hitch. I got in my car and drove back to work to eat, only to discover no napkins and no utensils in my to go bag. Luckily, I keep extra napkins in my glove box. Very helpful when you're trying to eat gravy covered tater tots with your fingers.
Overall, the tot roast was...okay. Like other reviewers mentioned, it's pretty salty, but I kind of expected that based on the ingredients. I paid an extra .60 something cents to add sour cream on the side and wish I hadn't; I don't think it added much and I actually liked it better without. I thought the tots were cooked very nicely (super crispy, not weird and oily as they are sometimes) and mostly avoided severe sogginess except for the ones at the very bottom of the pile. The gravy was flavorful. I don't really know how to rate the pot roast because frankly I don't eat it that often and so I don't have much to compare it to. It seemed decent? Very very tender. I appreciated the surprise dinner roll thrown in with the tot roast. It was good. I didn't dislike this meal, but honestly it would probably be more enjoyed by someone who likes pot roast more than me, lol.
I'd come back and give them another go with a different dish. WEG has been a local favorite for a long time and that's probably not...
Read moreI want to say that I had a fairly decent experience at this restaurant. The waitresses were all sweet, they were very patient with me while waiting on a friend. I asked for a kids menu due to having gastric sleeve surgery and I can only eat like 1/4th of a burger. Apparently the kids burger and the adult burger is the same size. I asked my waitress about my receipt because it came back as a kids drink but adult burger price. I asked why and she said the owner was actually upset over me asking to order off the kids menu. That its the same size so I should be charged like an adult. Said waitress also mentioned that you swore at her.
Okay let me break my problem with this down.
First: Learn to speak to your employees better. She was anxious to tell me about you refusing me kids price even though I ordered off the kids menu. Your employees shouldn't have to panic over you switching up the price. Why didn't you come out and talk to me? Now this is being aired out publicly.
Second: Why is your kids burger the same size as the adults? As mentioned earlier I could only finish 1/4 of the burger. I want to leave some statistics for you to look over and want to also congratulate you on being a huge part of the problem. You offer 3 chicken strips for a kids meal. I can eat like 1 1/3 chicken strips, if that. Your brunch menu as well.... You need to figure out them portion sizes.
For children and adolescents aged 2-19 years in 2017-20181: The prevalence of obesity was 19.3% and affected about 14.4 million children and adolescents. Obesity prevalence was 13.4% among 2- to 5-year-olds, 20.3% among 6- to 11-year-olds, and 21.2% among 12- to 19-year-olds.
Third: If I knew you were going to charge me full price I would've just went to a good burger joint. Your burger was subpar vs actual burger joints. That or I would've ordered something else on the menu. I'm a very reasonable person and I understand that you were upset at the thought of losing a little money because your kids burger is the same size as your adults burger for whatever reason. Why not say something before making my meal so I could choose something else?
It was my first time in your restaurant and I can honestly say it will be the last. I wish you would've spoken to me in person and we could've had a discussion. That would've been the sensible thing to do instead of being rude to your employee and making them do it. She couldn't explain why. Maybe you can explain it to me? I'd love for you to hit on every topic if you're going to make a response. Otherwise don't waste any more of my time. I feel like your restaurant could be decent, under the right ownership. Please look into the second point. Your portions are the reason we have 200 pound 8 year olds. This is a kid from Ohio. People like...
Read moreWe've lived in Huntsville for almost five years now and have been wanting to go to the West End Grill for since we moved here. But due to our busy schedules we never found the time to go. We finally had a free evening and decided to give it a try.
The West End Grill is open 7 days a week. Sunday-Thursday 10:30 AM-12 AM Friday & Saturday 10:30 AM-1AM Brunch Available Sunday's 10:30 AM-2:00 PM
We went on a Saturday afternoon expecting a 30-45 minute wait to be seated. Surprisingly we were seating right away and a server came and took our drink order. The server quickly brought out our drinks. One coke and two glasses of fresh sweet tea. It was some of the best sweet tea I've since we've moved here five years ago.
After a few minutes of looking over the menu we knew what we wanted to order for our meals. Our son ordered the Build Your Own Burger which came with fries. My wife ordered the small Zack's Tot Roast with cheese and bacon with a side order of Fried Okra. I ordered the large Zack's Tot Roast with Cheese, Bacon, Jalapeños, Onions and Mushrooms. They also provide a condiment cup of sour cream to top it off.
We had read several reviews/raves about the Zack's Tot Roast and I must say it was everything we expected. The Tot Roast came piping hot and loaded with a layer of tater tots smothered with roast beef and gravy mixed with Jalapeños, Onions and Mushrooms. It was topped off with Bacon, melted Monterey Jack and Cheddar Cheese. As an extra I added a fried egg. This is the best in comfort food, until you eat so much that you have to loosen your belt.
The taste is almost beyond description. The roast beef is succulent and the Jalapeño Peppers, Onions, Mushrooms, Bacon and Cheese all provide a well blended but distinct flavor. The small Tot Roast is a filling substantial meal. My wife was satisfactorily full after finishing her small Tot Roast. I could only eat half of my Large Tot Roast, but was more than happy to bring the rest home in a to-go container.
I had looked at the menu on-line before we went to the West End Grill and noticed they had New Orleans Bread Pudding. So I ordered my Bread Pudding to eat later at home. It was nice and hot and I had to try it once I got home. One word, Delicious!
The prices are reasonable and the portions are substantial. We will be coming back to try some of the other menu items. This is a nice, quiet Bar and Grill that takes excellent care of it's customers and...
