I have celiac disease, so the first thing I always ask about before sitting down is if they make any accommodations. They have a gluten free menu. So that's great. And the food was pretty good. The manager was also very understanding and really knew the menu well in terms of what was safe and what wasn't. But that's as far as my good review goes.
We sat at the bar, which I enjoy. After a few minutes we were asked about drinks and I asked to see the gluten free menu. She said yes they have a separate one and have us two regular menus. So I asked again about the gluten free menu.
I cannot remember what else I was going to say in this review however we did go back there again recently, there's at least a year in between these two reviews.
While I found the food quite good again, and there were definitely options that I could eat, I found the manager or the owner quite disconcerting. When asking about the gluten-free menu because it was very confusing, there were items that were listed on there and then it said you couldn't have practically everything that was part of the dish. It's like, you can have the shrimp and grits but not the grits and not the sauce. There are a bunch of things that were similar to this and you had to keep going back and forth between the regular menu and this gluten-free version to see what each dish comprised of and what you would be missing out on basically.
We asked to talk to the manager about it because I've never seen a more confusing menu, and he said, most people just know our menu so they know what each dish has and they know what they can have or can't have. I thought this was really confusing and I said well what about people who are new to your restaurant or don't know the menu. And he said well almost all of the customers who go here are regulars. He asked me what I think it should be like and "what do you think we should re-write everything?" and I said, well most restaurants that have a gluten-free menu just have a separate menu that's written out the same as the original menu indicating the items that you can or can't have. You can't say that I'm able to have shrimp and grits and then I can't have the grits or the sauce, because that's literally not shrimp and grits. He replied that the way the shrimp are cooked with the shrimp and grits is different than the other shrimp option on the menu, and I said well then why don't you just write those two shrimp options , to which he replied something along the lines of they can't change the whole menu. The conversation was quite off-putting and uncomfortable. And even though I enjoy the options that are available we definitely will not be returning because of this.
I was definitely surprised that I was able to have the lobster dip, although I did find it slightly lacking in Lobster it was definitely delicious and there were definitely pieces that I could see in the dip. I really appreciated that it was served with prawn crackers so that I could eat that as well. When my shrimp came out they were absolutely overcooked and dried out, they brought me back some new ones which were definitely cooked better some were still dry but far better than the first dish. The potatoes are nice and large and you're serving size of sides is quite nice as you can see that is quite a bit of asparagus on the plate compared to most other places. The Caesar salad definitely had a lot to be in this type of restaurant, it was just basic lettuce and parmesan cheese with a caesar dressing on the side although the...
Read moreAs a solo work traveler and my first time in this city, this was my only experience at Connors. I found it after seeing it listed on Trip Advisor as one of the “Top 10” restaurants in Huntsville. I walked in around 5pm and could already see the tables were filling up. By the time I left a little after 6:15, there was already a small line. Gorgeous cuts of meat were on display near the beautiful bar, located not far from the host station at the door. As I was led to my table, I noted that the atmosphere was soothing and serene, with lighting coming gently through the windows as well as adequately lit from the in-house lights. The staff were impeccably dressed and it wasn’t difficult to tell who worked in what position. I really liked the smart white smocks on the servers for that professional feel. After being seated, I was greeted by Paige, who would look after me during the rest of my experience. I cannot say I’ve had a better server despite eating in many different places through the US and internationally. She was very familiar with the menu and combinations of items, expertly recommending items when questioned. The benefit of dining alone is that one can notice all the details of the experience without distraction by pleasant company. That said, though the food was good, it wasn’t outstanding as I expected it to be. I started with the lobster dip, served with shrimp puff chips, followed by the 6oz filet with espresso rub, lobster bisque soup and truffle deviled eggs. For dessert, I had the chocolate mousse cake. Again, I have no real complaints, but I was underwhelmed, or maybe just whelmed. I really didn’t notice the espresso rub as it didn’t seem to provide any crusting on the meat, at least none that my mouth noticed. I ordered it medium rare, but arrived more medium, even if very tender. I do love chocolate, so when Paige recommended her favorites of the chocolate mousse cake or German chocolate upside down cake, I should have been more adventurous and chosen the latter. My decision was based on the ice cream served with the German chocolate cake, which seems like a sweet way to fill a plate, but not very exciting. As with the rest of the meal, the mousse cake was good, but a solid routine choice and a bit ordinary. As I’m only here a week, it’s unlikely I’ll be back. I’m glad to have had the experience though I wouldn’t recommend it for solo diners. Bring your friends and family to add that needed “something extra”...
Read moreI have multiple people telling me that this is an amazing place for date nights, etc, so I decided to take my wife for her birthday a couple of weeks ago. Things kind of started on the wrong foot because I thought I scheduled the reservation for 6:30 but it was 6. So we were a little late to the reservation, but the hostess was super nice and was able to fit us in without an issue. Once we got sat out server came and got our drink orders and we decided to order the Voo Doo Shrimp appetizer which was delicious. But, it is a little spicy, we got the appetizer and our server didn’t come check on us for 10+ minutes, and my wife’s drink was completely empty because of the little kick from the shrimp. The server finally showed up and asked if we needed anything while they could see our drinks were empty. We let them know that we would like refills and we went ahead and ordered our food. I ordered the Boursin Filet and my wife went with the Prime Filet both cooked medium. We got our food and all was good, until again the server failed to show and ask how our meal was and if we needed anything after 20+ minutes. Well, my wife’s steak was cooked more rare/medium rare, but she ate around what she could until she got uncomfortable with it. We talked about it and she wanted to mention it to the server (about half the steak was undercooked). When the server finally showed, my wife mentioned that the steak was undercooked and the server agreed. Instead of offering a solution to get it fixed, they asked if it was okay. This made my wife uncomfortable because we are not the type of people to demand it be fixed, it felt like the server wanted her to live with it instead of instantly offering a solution like taking the plate and taking care of it. My steak on the other hand was delicious, but the food is not cheap by any means, so I would have expected better from the service. We had a good time together and will probably try again in the future, but this visit was...
