My wife encourages me to meet my buddies at the Hen House Cafe because she says it's far less expensive than a psychotherapist. If she detects that the “blues” is creeping in (these days usually due to what's happening worldwide) she says, “Don't you think you ought to go to the Hen House?” I'm always in a great mood when I return home. The social interaction is a life-saver for this 85-year-old Air Force veteran and retired geoscientist.
The food is not my highest priority. Instead, I go mainly for the fellowship and the opportunity to make new friends. On the other hand, the food is satisfying and the atmosphere is great. I don't need to be the center of the universe and I enjoy learning from and sharing with others. Since early 2014 I have enjoyed the Hen House environment. I've seen how hard the employees and the owners work and I know how tough restaurant business can be. I don't know how the waitresses maintain their energy levels and their fun personalities. I know that they have bad days just like everyone else. Their jobs are far from easy. My guess is that they are very tired at the end of their shifts. I think one of the reasons we get along so well with those hard workers is that we appreciate them and have genuine concern for them. None of those in our group suffer from “terminal uniqueness” and we are understanding if something doesn't go quite right. In instances when that happens, they cheerfully do their best to make sure that things turn out well for us.
Currently I am sad over the departure of a terrific waitress and wonderful lady, Pam. I am very much hoping that circumstances are such that she will be able to return. There have been times when Pam, like the other waitresses, has made my day usually by providing some source of healthy laughter which is so very therapeutic. At times her genuine and sincere greetings have snapped me right out of some negative vibe I happened to carry in with me that day. "Special" is not an adequate enough word to describe her.
At the Hen House I can drop in, meet a friend or friends, eat a tasty meal and then sit around and shoot the breeze until closing time if I want to. Nobody chases us out and we are not ignored once we finish our meals. The coffee gets topped off often if that's our thing. For the most part other customers I've met there are terrific. It's a fun and friendly place where my faith in humanity...
Read moreI really should have read the reviews Pryor to coming into this establishment. I am giving it a 1 Star when in all truth it should be 0stars. We were in on Sunday seemed to be sort of a rush an the restaurant was filled. My father an I were seated, very promptly. The waitress seemed to be bothered by my father an I, due to we did not offer her our drink order as we were walking towards the table. I asked my father in his native language what he wanted to drink once he sat down an my waitress had to sigh as I did, as if this was a bother to her. Once we sat, an our drink order given the table next to us complained over cold sausage gravy. My coffee came out an it was very weak. Like they put 1/2 the ground beans they should into the coffee, it looked like tea in my cup. Not very impressed by this point. We ordered our food asked specifics of some menu items an it seemed to annoy the waitress. We put our order in. To be honest it felt like 5 min past an we got our food. Keep in mind our server after taking our order never came back. I had to flag other runners an servers, to get more drinks. She did stay an chat with her regulars, guess some people in the area come here regularly i have no clue as to why, that’s besides the point. Let me say I had asked or ordered chicken fried steak, I got chopped steak that was raw, I asked for home fries they had no color just with an no seasoning, my eggs were ok. An my rye toast amazing. My pancakes I ordered still had raw batter in it. My dads sausage only one side hit the grill it was raw, his potatoes same way an his eggs that were scrambled were very tough. I did have a waitress take off 3.00 for my meat that was raw. I did have a hostess ask how my meal was an wanted a manager to comp my meal. I said no I ordered it I will pay for it, I just never...
Read moreThis was our first and probably only time we will ever visit the Hen House. The server seemed like a nice person, but she didn't seem to care about our food, what we needed, nor our experience. She came to our table a couple of times to bring water & take our order, then pick up a plate after food was served. However, she didn't say another word to us after taking our order, though. She never asked us if we liked the food, never checked to see if we needed ketchup or condiments, water refill...Nothing. We went to the checkout area & that lady asked how it was. We told her "it was quite greasy." She said "oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Did you tell your server?" I said, "no, she never came back to check on us or anything." She simply replied, "I'm sorry," and that was it. We don't understand why this place has such a high rating because we've had far less greasy food at Denny's & Waffle House along with better service at most other places. I'm sharing this review to be honest about our experience, so please don't allow our review to sway your own perception; try it yourself & use your own judgment because other people...
