Prior to feasting on Mexican seafood in Mexico, we decided to get the teaser version at cult favorite Mariscos El Submarino.
What's not to love? The Aguachile Mixto Verde came in a super-sized mortar (more like a stone cauldron) filled with fresh, generous cuts of fish and shrimp, all swimming in a chilled broth of lime-flavored glory. It was everything you could want in an aquachile, and if you don't finish it with tears of happiness brimming in your eyes, you have no sole.
If you loooove tuna tostada as much as I do, you'd be disservicing yourself by not getting La Consentida, which comes packed with salsa macha--not to be confused with the over-exposed Japanese powdered green tea, macha is essentially Mexican Lao Gan Ma (chili crisp oil) but with peanuts instead of garlic crisps. Mariscos' version is an ample marriage of spicy, crispy, fresh, and umami, and I would happily eat this every day for the rest of my life.
Finally, we got a half dozen of the Camarones Zarandeados, which were perfectly grilled and lightly seasoned. Unless you're allergic to shrimp, I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't get a platter of these beauties....

Itâs not pescatarian, there is a really good steak taco on menu, but over all the menu is seafood centered.
I have a little personal rule of thumb. Most authentic Mexican restaurants around nyc area, they do an amazing job with âlandâ tacos, (al pastor, steak) but the fish taco on the menu is usually an afterthought, just a piece of grilled white fish on a tortilla. So I rarely order fish tacos at authentic mexican places because of that. Likewise, American restaurants (usually bars) with Mexican food on the menu, just have a boring steak and chicken taco, that arenât very good, so I usually end up ordering the fish tacos instead, and they come out alright.
This place completely breaks my rule of thumb as itâs an authentic Mexican restaurant that pays special attention to their seafood dishes and tacos that dominate the theme and the menu. The three I ordered (octopus, fish, shrimp) were really excellent and Iâll be coming back here to order more. And the house michelada is quite...
