Updated 2025.07.10 Their fish and chips were a bit overcooked, the halibut tasted a little overdone and dry on their combo fish and chips. There's more chips than fish on the order.
Updated 2025.06.01 Their fish and chips is first rate and a must stop and taste destination. The rockfish and halibut are my favorites. Cooked, moist, delicious. Oyster bar, with several other food trucks businesses serving burgers, crepes, ice cream.
Update 2021.05.14 This place hums with cooks now able to put out fish that's not overcooked, dry. But we still ask for rare on our fish, so the protein is moist, delicate. Asking for our salmon be cooked rare yielded a delightful, moist salmon. The crema sauce is a green mild sauce made with avocado for an additional charge.
Deckhand Daves creates an outdoor dining atmosphere that's pleasant with background music for a fixed food truck business. His business model invites visitors to come, spend some money, have a good dining experience. He's conscientious about the visitors having a positive dining experience and works hard to achieve that. This is quite a popular dining place with the locals as well as with cruise ship passengers during the season.
The most recent visit 2020 August, David was personally cooking another order of the ultimate fish. The order took quite a while to come out. This place is just busy with customers. The fish was not overcooked unlike the last time around, but a little on the bland side, could use a bit more seasoning.
Their halibut chowder was tasty but has something spicy that made my whole mouth take notice, if you like that sort of thing. I'd prefer a symphony of complex flavors to entice my tastebuds as opposed to something of a spicy fiery nature that overloads my tastebuds for a long duration.
In 2019 July Ordered the Ultimate Fish & Chips, both the halibut and salmon were overcooked and dry, only the rockfish was still moist. The fish of those two looked like they were very dark brown color, leading to suspect they were overdone before even biting into them. No coffee available, but a available from nearby Crepe Escape. My dining experience at Deckhand Dave's was absolutely phenomenal! After a long day of exploring Juneau, we were craving fresh seafood, and this place delivered beyond expectations. We started with the fresh oysters, and they were everything you could hope for—plump, briny, and incredibly fresh. Each one was like a perfect bite of the ocean, shucked beautifully and served ice-cold.
The halibut cakes were next, and they were out of this world. Crisp on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside, with a perfect mix of spices. You could tell the halibut was fresh, and the cakes were cooked to perfection—each bite was packed with flavor.
But the highlight for me had to be the halibut tacos. They were incredible—grilled to perfection with tender, flaky fish, fresh toppings, and a delicious sauce that tied everything together. These tacos were hands down some of the best I’ve ever had!
Deckhand Dave’s offers more than just amazing seafood—it’s a fun, casual spot with great service and a welcoming vibe. Whether you're a local or just visiting Juneau, this is the spot for unbeatable fresh seafood and a great atmosphere....
Read moreI ordered the sampler of 3 fish tacos, Blackened Rockfish, Grilled Salmon, and Beer Battered Halibut. (I think that's right...). All three were awesome! The Blackened Rockfish had a great smokey flavor and the Beer Battered Halibut was perfectly fried with a crispy outer layer and soft juicy Halibut inside. That one, while fried, didn't taste fried at all, but just tasted like a perfectly delicious tender crispy fish. In my opinion, that's how it should be!
As read from his website, there are "Three Baja-style fish tacos served on a corn tortillas with cabbage slaw. your choice of fish topped with a lime-chipotle aioli and garnished with fresh cilantro" I'm not a big fan of aioli, but Dave's lime-chipotle aioli was perfect for these tacos.
What's weird, but kind of nice for people who want to avoid huge crowds of cruise ship folk, is that his taco stand is right next to all the cruise ships yet only a handful of people were there... Don't let the food truck in the parking lot fool you, Dave serves up some seriously fresh fish tacos! Particularly when compared to all the tourist traps...
