My mom has been going to Hien Vuong for 27 years. It’s owned by the same people. I’m 21 years old, and we don’t live out here anymore. We drove the 5 hours back out to KC today and had to stop by. I loved it again like I always do. #2, #71, and #75 are menu staples for us because we’re pescatarians. Common complaints about this place are that the service isn’t peppy and they charge auto gratuity of a mere 15%. These people work hard and take pride in their food. It’s a pleasure to know them and their craft. I think people pass judgement on them sometimes because they don’t falsely inflate their mood for tips. If you’re looking at this review to figure out whether you want to go eat here- just go ahead and plug the address into your GPS. When you go up to pay, ask about the grandchildren photos and you can see the owner light up. This is a ramble and a half, but Ive stood by Hien Vuong for 21 years. I think everybody should try them at least once.

Not the worst restaurant, I'm solely reviewing on the Pho. I got the meatball pho. It had a very light color and there was no strong flavor to it. Would not pay $10 for it when there are 3 pho resturants around the block, that are better tasting. Not the best service. I did get a decent plate of veggies for the pho. There is a cost to refills but I asked for water. Did not get a refill for my water. No ac in the building. They dont bring you the bill so you have to go up to the front to pay, which isn't much of a problem for me. However, when I gave her my card to swipe, she said "are you going to leave a tip or no?" A little rude. However the food came out faster than expected. I wouldn't reccomend this place since there are other, better resturants in KC, just across the street. Wouldn't go back for the pho but I would go back to try the other menu items since city market resturants close around 7 anf they stay open a little later.

Unfortunately, very disappointed with the experience. My main criticism is how salty ALL the dishes were (both soups and noodle ones). Honestly, at times it was almost inedible it was SO salty. You always expect a little extra salt when you get food out in places but this was just unpleasant. My second criticism was that you barely get any of the “proteins” in your dishes. Someone in our table got the dumpling and pork soup and it came with ONE dumpling; one! And two others got shrimp dishes that came with one/two shrimps, respectively. You’re not paying cheap either, dishes run between $10-12 - you should absolutely be getting a bit more bang for your buck. It feels a bit like we’re being ripped off if I’m being honest - and as a customer, it’s a pretty miserable feeling.

Terrible service, beef broth soup is good.

I couldn't understand anything my waitress was saying. When I went to pay I thought I heard her list something that I didn't order. I listed exactly what we had ordered, and by the time we had that straightened out, I was flustered and frustrated. Because I couldn't understand her, I couldn't tell if this was a misunderstanding, or if she was hustling me. She handed me a piece of paper, I put away my credit card, and I walked out. As I waited outside for my wife and son to get back from the bathroom, I thought "What just happened, is this my credit card receipt? It says receipt on it." It was not, it was the bill. When I realized this I went back in to pay (this was just about two minutes after I had left). I had walked out flustered not realizing that she had never swiped my card.

When I went inside to explain, she made a scene in her own restaurant. I was calm and apologetic, and tried to explain that there had been a misunderstanding. I obviously intended to pay, because I came back into the restaurant holding my bill up, asking if she had swiped my card.

She was very rude and loud. She demanded that I leave a tip. I slid the bill back to her without writing a tip amount on it. She slid it back and demanded a tip again. I put my finger on the total and said "this is what I'm paying". She went on about how that was only for the food, "you don't pay for somebody serving you?" she complained. I said "you were rude to me, I'm not giving you a tip". She continued complaining, and so I told her "ring me up right now or I'm taking my credit card and leaving without paying anything".

At this point everyone in the small dining area was listening to our discussion. After threatening to leave, she quickly rang me up. I told her I would not be back, and that I would be leaving a negative review, while she kept saying "yeah yeah" and waving me away. This is that negative review.

Take my Vietnamese friend's advice (as I should have) and go to the Vietnam Cafe...

So, I was in the city market area and decided to stop on in for lunch. Let me say that I love Vietnamese food. When I came in I sat down at a table towards the front. I was asked by the person who served me to move. "Someone" was sitting there. Okay...sure. I'm directed to sit by the door. Got it. Was brought water but the service I received was noticeably different than those around me. There were two gentleman in the restaurant before me. The lady who was serving everyone was VERY pleasant towards them and another pair that came in later. Even referring to them as her "friends". Meanwhile, I'm sitting by the door after I ordered the fried rice (was good but had to take it to go). The rice came out. No pleasantries, no asking if the water can be refilled. Fast forward five minutes. I'm finished eating and clearly waiting for the check and a to-go box. The lady had to come out and walk right past me at least five times. All the while providing excellent service to everyone else. Approximately, five minutes before she decided it was okay to even look my direction to close out my meal there where two young ladies who walked in AND SAT AT THE TABLE I WAS ASKED TO MOVE FROM! Nothing was said to them. Just excellent customer service. I almost left a $20 and walked out. I gave my card to settle the bill and she had the nerve to ask if I wanted to add a tip??!?! For what? I'll never go back there. Food is overpriced too....

This place is a rip off. There is nothing authentic about their food. They make Vietnamese food but the serving nothing like a typical Vietnamese. Really makes you feel like you've been conned at a tourist trap area.

The owners couldn't really be bothered with service, hence everything is gets done really slow, from getting the menus to taking orders and actually getting your food.

I ordered the pork chop rice and at every place I've eaten that, you get a generous slice of pork chop that you'd need a spoon or a knife to cut it before you it it, but this place it was as thin a slice of ham.

The eggrolls showed up burned, when we told the owner-server that, she acted like she didn't hear us and walked away.

When we paid the bill, undeserving of her tip, she kept arguing with my friend over how it was stated in the menu and we had to pay it, to which he reluctantly did and I told him that we're never coming here again.

This sort of operations is what gives Asians a bad name, makes us wish we never went there to begin with but hey, at least we'll never go...
