I have been to kura sushi in big cities of taiwan and Japan at a young age. when my husband finally got to visit this last year, he was smitten with the concept and our experience. for the fun of it, we decided to invite his brother to try out the chain.
we told ourselves to judge reservedly, however, it was difficult not to notice some significant differences because the differences highlighted what made our prior experiences stand out in our memories versus what made this experience rather unenjoyable.
i want to praise, first, the friendliness of their staff -- they were all friendly and each a bright personality. this makes a huge difference! this includes the waiting line attendant to servers. i appreciated the order everyone adhered to to make an efficient run of a busy holiday: greeting, wiping tables, running orders and responding to table service. while the bathrooms were not completely abhorrent, it may benefit from some form of logged maintenance to keep up a better sanitary situation. or, it may just be that I walked in after some slop job.
let's talk about the rest of our dining experience. we were excited to see a decent range of menu items, both raw and cooked. yay! we sat in the row furthest from the entrance, closest to the dividing wall to the bathrooms. being the second-to-last table, most of the items were gone. but, hey, no problem. the fun of the experience is also when you get to order items you want from the tablet! we ordered about 1/3 to 1/2 of our food from the tablet while admiring the options (signs with mostly empty plates) on the belt. i think we received our custom orders (usually a maki or a nigiris of sorts) in a timely fashion. there was one point I waited for two of my orders for about 20min. i think it would not have been as noticable had there been some viable conveyor belt options to pick from or if my husband did not have the same experience a plate of food prior.
ok, let's talk about the quality of the food: mmm. the portion of the fish on the nigiris were understandable, but i was shocked to see beef nigiris where the beef hardly made up the size of my thumb print. the tempura on my "crunchy roll" was rather soft and stale. last food criticism: we thought the fish looked fresh underneath the LED, but all three of us returned home with a stomach ache that sent us to the toilet. perhaps someone may suggest that we chalk up our bad stomach to something else that coincided with our kura experience. but, no, i think it was certainly the food we ate.
last thing I want to point out: the wait can take a long time. we qeued for the waiting line just before 1:30p, and we were seated close to 2:20p. i do not think it is the fault of any person in particular or the ticketing system. rather, i think the space allows limited service compared to the other many locations we'd been to that sized go be about 3x to 4x the size of the location on the plaza. given the situation, just keep that in mind when you plan to come with friends or family. i think you can call in for a reservation, so you may give that a shot?
anywho, i hope everyone else has a better experience than we did. we don't plan to go...
Read moreWe walked in at 5:11pm, checked in at the tablet by their door for a party of 4, and waited in line with other parties by the hostess table for apx 30 minutes. While we were standing by the hostess stand, "she" was talking to herself about none of the system apps syncing with each other. Everytime there was a problem or an inquiry about wait times, the only thing the hostess knew how to say was "did you get the text, what does the text say, text this, text that". "She" truly had no idea how to do anything. She then told us to either go shopping and come back after we received a text from their automated system, or we could wait outside in sub zero temps. It was obvious the building was WAY over their 86 person capacity. She then moved us and a few other parties to wait in the back by the bathrooms as to not make the front of the building look as busy. My party waited until 6:20pm then split to go eat elsewhere. The hostess said she could sit our smaller party at the bar immediately, but then proceeded to wait an additional 30 minutes where she then sat us at a large booth. Nobody took our drink order or walked us through the ordering process for 15 - 20 minutes. When somebody finally came with our drinks, they said they couldn't sell alcohol because the establishment did not have a liquor license despite it being on their online menu. The food on the conveyer belt was warm and the pods were not closed. When we were half way through ordering, I inquired about an online pick up order I had placed before deciding to be seated in hopes of taking it with us, only to find that my card had been charged, but they had not received the order on any of their systems. The hostess that seated us came to "help" and got snippy. She sent another host to mediate the problem, one didn't really know what to do, so she brought one of her supervisors and they were able to help me. The two black women working were absolutely phenomenal, and seemed to be the only ones who knew how to do their jobs. All in all, everyone needs more training, the system needs more work, and this place is not suitable for the type of business they...
Read moreThe sushi is good. They charge by plate and man, can those plates add up. Expect to spend more than you might expect. Or maybe not. Maybe you aren't a greedy little sushi hog like I am. Honestly tho, it's worth it and I don't think overpriced at all. We spent under $100 for the three of us.
We went midweek late afternoon to avoid heavy crowds. They do have an app in store that allows you to place yourself on a wait list so that you can do other things beside standing in line. Due to our timing, we were sat right away.
It was disappointing to be sat at, what I imagine is, the end of the conveyor belt. The offerings are limited and sparse where we were sat. They make up for it by allowing you to order at the table and I have to say that the made to order was quicker than I expected!
I ordered a diet coke ($3.50) and it arrived by robot (very cute!), but it was only 3/4 full. That wouldn't bother me, but you can't order refills at all. You have to purchase another drink.
Another minor complaint is that the sushi rice sticks to the plate. A small, but mildly annoying thing.
I will definitely go back tho. The quality of the fish is good.
The only thing I'd stay away from is the crab leg sushi. The crab is real, but it's watery from being defrosted. It neither smells, tastes, or feels fresh. The rest though? Pretty darn good.
I'd fully give another star for service if it wasn't for the drinks issue. Maybe that is good 'ol USA entitlement, but I really wanted more diet coke. For free.
Oh! Checking out was easy too. You can use the QR code and pay by phone or you can pay thru a server. They had only one for the whole place and she hosted and sat everyone, so she was super busy. Aside from being sat, you don't need a server tho if you are paying electronically. All ordering was super easy.
If you are an old like me, don't forget your glasses! The ordering screen is kinda tiny and hard to read. Speaking of which, bring some hand wipes. Everyone touches that thing (including me) with their...
