Fun fact: Koukai (different kanji,... probably) means "regret" in Japanese. And that's exactly I feel 'bout this place right now.
Ordered for delivery over the long weekend 'cuz I'm sad and got no friends.
Apparently it's a chain from Venezuelan. Now I don't mind Venezuelans, but the fact that it's a chain means I don't have to be polite the way I do with small businesses and can crack my hands
Wait hold on if from Venezuela then why is it a Japanese-Perúvian- you know what, let's get to the point.
First off, I ordered the wakame salad with iidako (baby octopus), but what came to me was wakame salad with normal chopped octopus (tako). "Ii" also means "good" in Japanese. I can think of a very cruel war joke involving the Japanese here, but I'll just say this: This menu item might have wakame and tako in it, but it is not "ii".
The suzuki fry was drenched in cream cheese which was off-putting right after the delivery, but after proper reheating, was actually pretty decent and the preparation of stuffing the feesh with kanikama before tempura-frying it is rather interesting. I would still halve the amount of cream cheese myself, though.
But the star of the show for my way-overpriced dinner was the Aderezo de Ajonjoli Deluxe, which I assume means "mess of random BS" despite not knowing much Español because that's exactly what it looks, tastes and feels like. It has WAY too many things going on in it that it's hard to tell what's even IN there, all the flavors tend to clash together yet the one thing I can say for sure is that everything was drenched in an ill-concocted version of Perúvian mayo (which mostly reeks of vinegar with hints of orange juice).
And you can have all this for the low, low price of $80 plus taxes and tips if you go by their online PICKUP menu.

Read moreI have to call BS on most of these 5 star reviews. My guess is they are friends and family supporting a business. Can't knock them for that, but Kokai's quality is not 5 stars. After seeing their online presentation I was really looking forward to eating here. Every dish looked so fresh and appetizing. However, they clearly are more attentive to the marketing aspect of the restaurant than the actual food quality. Bummer! I ordered the Suzuki Fry appetizer, a Katana roll, and had some Hot Sake. The appetizer, which is breaded and fried fish and crab with some other ingredients, seemed to arrive a bit quick to be made fresh and my first bite supported that idea. The inner part was alright but the fried breading was so dry and bland. It was like the frozen breaded chicken strip from the grocery store---not good. I do think there is hope for this appetizer if they would use a beer or tempura batter. Next was the Katana roll with eel, shrimp tempura, cream cheese, crab, masago and eel sauce. Flavor was not bad but the tempura seemed not existent, so there was no crunch to contrast the softness of the other ingredients. Lastly was the hot sake. I don't have a high bar set for hot sake, but i would actually like it to be hot. Theirs was luke warm at best and the flavor was somewhat muted. Im not saying it was diluted because I dont know that it was, but that would explain both oddities with this drink. All said, I dont know if I would have been as disappointed if the marketing aspect wasn't as good as it was. Seeing the dishes beforehand really got my appetite stirring, but the delivery was for sure a letdown. Do what you will with this info but I think this place is a one-and-done for me. We have too many options around Katy to settle...
Read moreI don't normally go out of my way to blast a restaurant. I usually just pay and then avoid. I would hate for another person to have this same experience so just wanted to share. We had a birthday party at the hibachi table this weekend. Please don't do this. Had to argue to order sushi before the hibachi "show". Was told at 1st I was going to have to wait until after but eventually they allowed it. I only ate 1 of my 2 rolls cause it tasted off Glad I chose to have the sushi because hibachi was borderline inedible. My daughter had it and the rice was loaded with egg shells. The beef smelled sus and told my girl not to eat it. They decided to do chicken and steak then split between all. My jaw dropped when they dumped a tray of raw chicken and steak onto the surface all together and mixed it up to cook. Never seen this before and have been to hibachi maybe 100 times in my life. This is not a safe food practice at all. It's dangerous and reckless. I'm sure the health department would have issues with this. Had no idea that a 4% charge was going to be added to pay with a card and not cash. Just raise the menu price if you need to offset you credit card fees. I have never seen this practice anywhere except the gas stations. 1st time ever in a restaurant. Sneaky fees really piss me off. The server tried his best and was friendly. He did not make these policies and was just doing his job. Thanks for your hard work. We will never go back. I will never recommend this place to anyone. Both my daughter and myself immediately went home and sent the night in...
