Crawfish Crawl - February 2019 Me and my sister were on a quest to find the best Crawfish in west Houston / Katy. We visited five restaurants and rated them in multiple categories to determine our favorite. Flavor - they do not have multiple flavors like many of the Asian seafood restaurants.. Orleans Kitchen is the a traditional Louisianan Cajun style restaurant where Crawfish is boiled in the traditional Cajun spices and no seasoning is sprinkled on the outside. Spice level - excellent - perfect amount of heat without the excess salt. Size - mixed - medium, large and a few smaller crawfish. Presentation - The crawfish are placed on a round platter covered in a parchment type paper and covered with a large stainless bowl to keep them hot. Service - excellent - this was our second time at the restaurant Saturday evening. Our first visit was at 6:30 pm and the line was almost out the door so we decided to return later in the evening. When we returned it approximately 9:50 pm, it was our last stop in our five restaurant contest. The restaurant closed at 11:00 pm on Saturday nights. There were still several tables with customers as well a few patrons in the bar. There was no wait and we were immediately greeted by the cashier who was friendly and talkative. Several groups of customers came in after us and a short line formed. Ambiance - very nicely decorated in a Cajun / Mardi Gras type festive theme. A separate bar area and TV's throughout the restaurant and bar. Price - Market price of $8.99 per pound Cleanliness - Excellent - no dirt or grit. We ordered corn and potatoes to accompany the two pounds of crawfish. The order was very generous and looked like at least 3-3 1/2 pounds. Not only were the crawfish delicious, hot, spicy, flavorful and perfectly boiled the corn was perfectly seasoned with an excellent texture. I thought the potato flavor was excellent but slightly under-cooked. The sausage link was the largest of all and the tastiest. It was the perfect texture, perfectly cooked, juicy but not greasy and delicious with a Cajun Flavor. The restaurant and the restrooms were clean as usual and the staff was helpful and friendly. We spoke with Michael Romo the managing chef and he was a great guy who makes sure the food quality is always top notch. Overall we decided Orleans Kitchen was in a dead heat with The Cravin' Cajun and tied for...
Read moreVisited on March 26, at around 3:30pm. The restaurant looks like an old Boudreauxs Restaurant that was closed and they purchased the property but the quality is not even close to Boudreauxs. The food was OBVIOUSLY frozen. The boudin was mush and reheated in a microwave. All of the crabfinger pieces were extremely small. My wife and I shared the boiled peel and eat shrimp which were heated in a microwave also. We wanted half cold and half hot but the staff stated "No we can't make them that way because they are PRE- PORTIONED & PRE-PACKED". So that means once again your food goes into the microwave in order to be heated. They almost disintegrated when you peeled them because they were so old. The french fries obviously had been sitting under heat lamps from the lunch crowd, they were not crispy at all. The tea and lemonade sitting in the Luby's Cafeteria type containers was hot because the ice 100% melted immediately when you poured it in your cup. The silverware was not clean, just ran through the washer without being checked for stuck on food. I ordered the fried shrimp & catfish combo. The shrimp was good but whoever prepares the catfish doesn't know anything about how to cook fish. The fish was obviously thawed and still soaking wet when prepared because you could cut into the pieces and the batter slides right off the fish. They did not salt, pepper and season the actual fish itself. It is a cafeteria type atmosphere that tries to give the impression that they're like a regular restaurant but this place is definitely the lowest step on the ladder. The food put me in the bathroom right away. Spend your money somewhere else, you have...
Read moreNot very busy upon entering, but was a bit noisy as there was a bday party going on. The setup and menu reminds me of a familiar restaurant on the north side of town.
It was our first time here and the cashier that took our order was very patient and made great suggestions. We ordered the boudin egg rolls, boudin balls, a shrimp/catfish platter, and a combo with crawfish etouffe and catfish. The category 5 was a little watery, but it was acceptable enough to drink.
The boudin balls were good, could have been a bit firmer and maybe a little crisp to it, but overall they were good. The egg rolls were not what I expected. They weren’t crispy at all, but the boudin filling was pretty good. The catfish from both meals was fried to perfection. It was flavorful with a crispy batter that stayed intact when I picked it up. The shrimp was decent as well. The fries were sooo stale and limp, but were also warm enough to had been just cooked. I’m not sure how they tasted like they had been sitting all day, but were warm enough to enjoy. Definitely won’t be ordering fries next time. The etouffe was basically some crawfish in a thick gravy on top of dirty rice. It wasn’t as tasty as I had hoped, but the few bites I took were edible.
Overall, the food was okay enough to return and try a few other items, however, it was so very hot and humid inside the restaurant that we couldn’t stay to enjoy our food. We packed it up and left shortly after eating a few bites. We couldn’t bear to remain inside. There was a breeze blowing in 102 degree weather outside that felt better than inside this place. Maybe we’ll return in late Fall for a...
