I had an amazing experience at Garbo’s Grill – delicious food and incredibly friendly service. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about Hank’s Hair of the Dog Saloon. I’m 28, my boyfriend is 28, and we just wanted to enjoy a drink with our meal in the afternoon, but instead, we encountered absurd bureaucracy and unbelievably rude service.
My boyfriend showed his foreign driver’s license as proof of age, which has been accepted everywhere else in Florida without any issue. But the waitress was incredibly rude and dismissive, refusing to serve us right away. So I went straight to her, explaining that we had come by car from Miami and our passports were safely stored in the hotel, but I also had high-quality photos of our passports and IDs on my phone. We had several valid documents, but she refused to even look at them.
When I later looked up Florida’s laws, I found that the only requirement for a valid ID is that it includes a photo, name, and birthdate – which our driver’s license absolutely meets. Nowhere in the law does it state that only a passport is acceptable, yet the business continues to insist that they are just “following the law.”
Based on other reviews, this is definitely not an isolated incident – this business regularly refuses service to foreign visitors under this excuse. It’s completely absurd and just unnecessary hassle. If they at least admitted that it’s their internal rule, fine – but they shouldn’t lie to customers by claiming it’s the law.
If you’re a tourist, I’d recommend avoiding this place unless you have your physical passport with you – and even then, be prepared for...
Read moreStopped by Hanks one night for a quick bite and a few adult beverages. We sat down at an open table and grabbed the menu from the food truck, Garbo's Grill food truck, located on Hank's Patio. The pros: the atmosphere at night with open air patio was nice. The band was in a location where you could hear the music, but still hold a conversation at the table. The food truck was a nice touch - the Korean Yum Yum shrimp tacos were very good; the special, lobster roll, was not very good and was overpriced at "market price". Beers were reasonably priced. The cons: our waitress was horrible. Bad attitude, seemed like she really didn't want to be there. After she set down our first beers and and walked off without asking if we needed anything else, she only returned 20 minutes later after she saw I ended up going to the bar to get another round. She snipped that since were seated at her table, she would have got them for us...and when we wanted another, wait for her. Sorry, we didn't wait, ate our food and left for another...
Read moreWas a great bar that supported the military (there is a large Navy and USCG base nearby) until one of the best music performers in town played the National Anthem recently. The majority of the patrons stood in respect, but one was giving the crowd the finger for the full period.
One awesome bartender (also a Navy vet) took great offense to this and simple refused to go near them. Later on social media I witnessed a local man take offense to her decision and attack her online and then by contacting the bar in personal retaliation. This quote “Military bar” decided to side with the local to have her fired. We came in after and purchased 13 Coronas for our recently fallen heroes, and the last two bands of the night refused our request to play the National Anthem. Another one of our favorite bartenders as since quite because of the environment around this. We will no longer recommend this bar or come in due to this level of disrespect from the management...
