I was so disappointed with my experience at Kyoto for a number of reasons. I was so excited to eat there for the first time, as I LOVE LOVE LOVE eating food cooked on hibachi and have dined at many different Japanese restaurants over the years. First of all, I ordered Shrimp Teriyaki, thinking it was going to be cooked on the hibachi (had I known it wasn't hibachi style, I would not have ordered it). When the cook had completed the rice and veggies and served the others at my table, I inquired about why I did not get the rice and veggies to which he responded my order would be cooked in the back. I asked him if I was going to get the fried rice and veggies, he did not answer. I tried to reiterate that perhaps my order was misunderstood, that I wanted the hibachi food, to which he replied about the waiter "maybe he doesn't understand English." I understand he was trying to keep the mood light, as he was entertaining our table, but no attempt was made to correct my order prior to him completing the cooking on the grill. This would have been the perfect opportunity to correct my order and make their guest happy. Also we did not see our waiter for at least 30 minutes, so I had no opportunity to tell him that perhaps I ordered the wrong thing nor did the cook attempt to get the attention of a server to correct the situation. All of us at the table were out of drinks. My food finally came from the kitchen about 15 minutes after he finished cooking on the hibachi. When I received my food, I got a plate of boiled shrimp with some sauce poured over them and a bowl of steamed white rice, not at all what I wanted. Why would I want this when I went to a hibachi restaurant?? We asked to see a manager because a friend of mine also had an issue with her order. The waiter apparently thought we just wanted something taken off of the bill, which was not true. We wanted to fill him in on the poor service as well. After waiting approx. 30 minutes for manager who never came, we left. The gratuity was included, as it is on all hibachi orders, however what they did not realize is that all 7 of us are servers, we leave WAY beyond the standard gratuity when the service is up to par. There were other tables with different servers getting excellent service. We constantly saw these other 2 servers working their sections. One last complaint I had was that their fried rice was probably the worst fried rice i've ever had at a restaurant of this type. It was literally just fried rice on the grill without the extras such as sesame seeds, etc. that most places add to it to make it delicious. This is usually my favorite part of the meal, the fried rice. This was so disappointing, as it was my best friend's birthday!!! People - GO TO OSAKA, right down the street from Kyoto and MUCH...
Read moreMe and my husband went in for dinner, and were halfway greeted by the manager, who looks miserable every time I’ve been in there picking up for Waitr. He leads us to the hibachi grill side and just leaves us there, but we decided on sushi, and went to the other side. The waitress was very new, I believe she said it was her second day, but she was very sweet and fast. We both ordered teriyaki plates, that came with rice according to the menu. When we got our food, there was only the meat and sauce. As we started to eat and realized we didn’t have the rice, we let the waitress know, and she went to the back and let them know. She came back out and informed us that they were going to make her pay for our rice and veggies. Remember, it states in the menu that the dish came with rice. The food was also lukewarm. So we told the manager about the temperature of our food (both plates), and he proceeded to argue with me about how they were both fresh and sat under the heat lamp. Being a server myself, I know that the only way that food could have been that temperature, would be for that sauce to not be fresh at ALL, and just sitting. ThHEN put under the heat lamp to try to warm it up. I also informed him that per their menu, our food was supposed to come with rice anyway, so why was he trying to make the waitress pay for it. He argued with me until I showed him HIS menu. Then, with an attitude asked if we wanted our dishes remade, or just warmed up. We opted for warming to avoid anything being done to our food. It was just a bad experience. I’m new here from California, and we are HUGE in customer service. You NEVER argue with the customer. And he seems like he hates his job. My husband said they used to be very busy in there, and the night we went, it was DEAD. Management is a huge part of that. With this city being as small as it is, that place could do well. First step is getting a manager in there who is t just there for the check, but actually loves what they do and treats the place like his...
Read moreFirst time here. I didn't enjoy the experience at all. Went by with a friend for lunch to celebrate my work success. Typically I just order different items from the menu when it's my first time. I want to try a variety of different options. I got the shrimp tempura/noodles/combo rice/shrimp toast/fried calamari salad and drinks. The rice and noodles were not cooked to order. Seemingly, those items were sitting in a hot box already . The calamari was extremely overcooked! The shrimp toast was ok, but entirely too greasy. The house salad was entirely too wet as if they sprinkled it with water before it got sent out. It was iceberg only! No tomatoes, cucumber, etc. The salad dressing was mediocre at best. I believe it was miso ginger and a cucumber dressing of some sort. The shrimp tempura was ok, it was served with a tempura sauce that really didn't compliment the shrimp very well. The dish also came with some unlisted items on the menu. I wasn't ok with that! I thought she brought out the wrong plate to me at first. I questioned her about the items, she somewhere explained to me what they were and agreed that it wasn't listed. Basically an overly deep fried tempura battered onion ring, a horrible tasting tempura battered broccoli floret and I can't even tell you what the other two fried items were. The server apologized and sent the food back and comped us for all of the fried items and the salad. We only paid for our drinks, noodles, and rice. Even though it wasn't really hot and fresh, I thought it was tasty and I did explain that to her. We both tipped her for her services provided. Unfortunately I will not go back. We left with empty bellies. I still hope that the business thrives. There's always room for...
