Sahara Bistro Shawarma — Restaurant in Lancaster

Major disappointment! I was so excited to try this Shawarma. Especially since most places in Lancaster do not have the rotisserie. I love both the chicken & lamb variety. I ordered the chicken shawarma sandwich. It started off okay. The spices tasted muddled (often the case if spices are old, well past their best by date) The predominant flavors were salt & garlic powder. The vegetables had little taste as well. I thought well next time I’ll try the lamb or falafel.

By about my 6th bite, the chicken became downright disgusting. I pulled bone, cartilage, & fatty rubbery skin out of my mouth with every bite. The little bits of actual chicken meat were dry & burnt; rather than caramelized & juicy.

I thought, I’ll just pick out the pieces of chicken I could find & just eat that. All the skin & bland mushy vegetables throughout the sandwich were making me feel nauseated. 🤢 I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the left overs from the week that were well past the date they should be served to customers.? That doesn’t excuse all the bone, cartilage, & skin in the chicken though.

Simple start up Mediterranean restaurant offering excellent food, reasonable prices and friendly service. Bathroom was really clean and a surprise for a downtown Lancaster city location. Very close to Binn’s Park. Owner is from Syria and wife from Russia makes for excellent food. I don’t think this place has been discovered yet. I think they have been open for only two months. Get your real shawarmas here. Some of the best in Lancaster county. They have a serious competition down the road with Greek gyros, but if you are looking for authentic middle eastern flavors, Sahara is your place!

Owner is very friendly. Prices are reasonable. They can add more drinks to the menu and maybe cook the falafel a bit more.
