On June 18, I inquired about hosting a birthday party for my 4 year old. I had already planned to take her and a couple friends to Shear Madness in the same plaza but wanted a way to include more friends and family. I saw Unicorn Scoops was a new local business and thought what a great way to be inside and support local. Unfortunately, they didn’t open until noon and with our first appointment at 10 I asked if they could open at 11.
Yesterday, July 12, was our party date. My husband showed up at 10:50 to set up and no one was there. Guests started showing up and still no employee arrived. We quickly set up our fold out table, got out the craft and tried to set up a little party on the sidewalk outside. One of my friends messaged the business on Facebook explaining what was going on. Since the business opened to the public at noon we assumed someone would be there by 11:30. When still no one showed up my mother in law ran to The Fresh Market to get some popsicles and water because as you can imagine it was hot!
We wrapped up the party around 11:50 because the toddlers and parents were all getting overheated. At 11:59, the employee shows up and does not open the door or say anything to us. My friend communicating via Facebook sent my phone number so the owner could reach out. I had also emailed on our previous thread at 10:55 that morning. Around 3pm, after cooling off and getting the kiddos down for nap, I still had not heard anything so I reached out via email expressing our disappointment and offering a solution— scoop cards to be sent out in the thank yous to the guests who all waited outside in the heat only to never be served.
The owner responded that he could not give away that much free product and suggested having the party the next day or weekend. If you’ve ever planned an event of any kind you know this is not possible. He also continued to place blame on me for not reaching out to confirm. I responded again expressing that as a customer, I did everything that was asked of me. He then responds with 3 unhinged emails about his inability to keep employees, the passing of his dog, his frustration with me for not confirming, etc. He ended the third email stating that why couldn’t a housewife like me take 2 minutes to confirm with a busy businessman like him. Mind you, this man has never met me and has no idea what I do for a living. I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt and a chance to rectify the situation and save face with the 41 local guests who all live within 15 minutes of Unicorn Scoops. However, if he feels this comfortable putting his misogynistic views in writing to a total stranger then I feel comfortable sharing them with...
Read moreI really wanted to love this place—especially with 80+ flavors—but unfortunately, the overall experience left me with little desire to return. The ice cream itself was genuinely good, which is the only reason this isn’t a one-star review.
First, you’re required to order through a single self-serve kiosk, which I've never seen in an ice cream shop. This makes the process feel impersonal and slow—especially for first-timers trying to navigate flavors. Speaking of which, no samples are offered, which is baffling when you’re expected to choose between 80+ options, some of which are very questionable combinations.
While waiting in line, we were blatantly ignored by who I believe is the owner and his trainee. We made eye contact multiple times, clearly standing there confused and waiting for guidance, and were met with zero acknowledgment. That level of dismissiveness really affects the atmosphere and sense of hospitality. Lake Mary is a place where you want to feel invited and happy, this isn't Miami or LA where nobody wants to communicate.
Even more concerning: the lack of basic hygiene standards. The owner stuck his head into a freezer without wearing a hat or any hair covering, and scoopers weren’t rinsed between flavors. As someone with food sensitivities, this is a major issue. I specifically ordered an oat-based flavor due to a dairy intolerance, but cross-contamination becomes a real risk when there’s no care taken between scoops.
I’m sad to say it, but unless they make some serious improvements in both service and sanitation, I won’t be coming back—no matter how good the...
Read moreWe came in hoping for a fun, easy outing, what we got instead was a frustrating, tone-deaf experience that left us regretting the stop.
First red flag: confusion from the moment we walked in. No signage, no staff greeting, no clear instructions on how to order. It felt like we were interrupting a system we were never invited to understand. After standing around awkwardly, we realized the only way to order was through a single screen buried in a corner. Not exactly welcoming, especially for families with kids or older guests.
Once we finally made our way through the ordering maze, things didn’t improve. No flexibility, no options to taste before choosing (despite dozens of flavors on display), and zero interaction from staff. Not rude, just absent. The entire vibe was cold and mechanical.
Even little things, like missing lids for drinks or a lack of seating for families, added to the feeling that this place was built around a concept, not actual people.
Most disappointingly, there was an offhand comment from the owner that came across as petty and unprofessional. When you openly mock other local businesses in front of customers, it says a lot more about your insecurity than your product.
Bottom line: • Poorly designed experience • Minimal hospitality • Out of sync with community values • Unwelcoming to families and newcomers
There are too many great options in Lake Mary to waste time and money here. This spot might work better in a big city with fast turnover, but it misses the mark entirely in a...
