I currently live in the Las Vegas area, but I travel to Los Angeles about once every month and a half. And every time I’m in town, one of my must-do stops is breakfast at Bulrocho. I absolutely love Korean soups, and Bulrocho’s Short Rib Soup with Young Napa has become a favorite that I look forward to with every visit. I’m originally from Los Angeles and lived there for over 40 years, so I’ve had the opportunity to try many Korean restaurants over the years. Without a doubt, Bulrocho stands out when it comes to Korean soups. I’ve been coming here for many years, and I’m finally taking a moment to leave a review because it truly deserves recognition. Their Short Rib Soup is outstanding. It's served piping hot—boiling, actually—which I really appreciate. The flavor is rich with a deep, savory bean paste base. The beef rib in the soup is impressively large, especially for a soup dish, and it's incredibly tender—so tender it practically melts in your mouth. The Young Napa is cooked perfectly: soft, flavorful, and not at all tough, unlike what I've experienced at other places. The banchan (side dishes) are just as impressive. They typically include freshly made kimchi, crisp cucumbers with bean paste, and a variety of other small dishes that are all fresh and flavorful. They perfectly complement the soup. I also want to highlight the excellent service. There’s one young woman in particular—with blonde hair—who has served us several times over the years. She’s consistently polite, attentive, and genuinely seems to care about making sure we’re taken care of. She always checks in to see if we need anything and does it with a great attitude. Honestly, if I owned a business, I’d want someone like her on my team. She’s one of the best servers I’ve ever encountered. If you’re a fan of Korean soups, Bulrocho is a place you absolutely need to try. They offer a variety of soup dishes, and both the food and service are...
Read moreAs a non-Korean, I've been coming here for 9 years and it's consistently gone unnoticed because it specializes a few soupy dishes that aren't what most people go for when they think "Korean". It's pretty simple: you choose 1 of 3 soups (chicken, hangover, or goat soup)
Chicken ginseng: a whole small chicken stuffed with rice, root vegetables, dates and herbs; super clean and excellent for someone feeling under the weather. Hangover: for the more-adventurous types because it has some chunks of meat, oxblood and tripe in it; great for hangovers Goat: my personal favorite, a perfect balance of herbs, spices, vegetables, and gamey meat; great for all occasions but especially winter
I'm happy to see that it's still doing well under covid circumstances and felt safe going the other day when they converted most of the parking lot into an outdoor, socially-distanced, and tented dining setup. Parking might be a bit tough since the restaurant next door (Parks BBQ) always draws a crowd.
You probably won't be able to finish the whole serving of soup since you're also eating rice and delicious banchan (free side dishes), which is awesome since they usually refill your soup when you ask for a takeout box. Despite coming for so many years, nobody ever remembers me, so it feels like everybody's extra nice to me (as an outsider?)
Whenever I leave LA I try to make this a priority on my return. The kind aunties who run the shop are still there, as are the crusty chainsmoking uncles. It feels normal, and that's nice.
Also, their hours might've changed a bit given covid. Not sure but they might be...
