TLDR: KTown Monty’s is the best burger spot in LA. 10/10 Must Eat. Must shop. Must experience! Ask for a dogpile from the “secret” menu & be impressed 🤩
I can’t believe I have never reviewed this Monty’s, this is the first place I ate when I got to LA. They have remained a regular spot I’ve ate at over the years whether it was to dine in or take out, their quality is consistent at this location. If you frequent here then it goes without saying that the dogpile is the best item to order but it’s an off-menu not so secret dish. It consists of a bed of fries or tots, or 50/50 of both, topped with two patties with cheese and 4 different house sauces. I get mine with fries and without the onion aïoli or Sriracha and add extra cheese and it’s simply perfect. This is one place that I can bring anybody that is not vegan and they have been impressed every single time. Monty’s makes it easy for me to prove to people that veganism does not compromise flavor or indulgence! The chocolate shakes are absolutely to die for and I can never manage to finish one on my own so I only wish that they made a smaller size for someone like me with a small appetite because I usually waste half 😭 They melt before I can finish them and they don’t store well in the fridge or freezer, it’s a texture thing. I wish they still allowed the maxed out fries to be upgraded with a patty for $4 but they stopped that when they added new locations to be consistent I guess. It was never an issue until a new location opened and wouldn’t do it so I assume they didn’t want there to be confusion about it. For me that was more budget friendly as an individual dining alone and less wasteful as someone with stomach issues that force me to eat small portions. The food reheats decent in an air fryer so you’ll still get to enjoy your leftovers though so no worries if you can’t finish it! Oh and they do the SICKEST collabs with their store merch that you do NOT want to miss out on!! I wish they included matching sweats to complete the fits because I’d be all in & a longboard collab too haha but that’s asking for a lot. I can dream 😅 The staff here is beyond friendly, soooo nice and always make me happy to be there. They have free stickers and pins on the counter to take and I always take extras to hand out like business cards when I recommend them to everybody. Last, but not least, do not forget to go on your birthday! There’s a sundae you can purchase only on your birthday that comes with this huge happy birthday pin that they customize with your name in stunning font (I’m talking Disney style penmanship) and ngl I did not try it so I can’t comment, I just wanted the pin with my order which is why I ended my bday at Monty’s last year and they kindly obliged 🤗 overall they are doing the vegan community the greatest service by giving us food that anybody and everybody can say is delicious AF.
& it’s not a huge selling point but the placemats are cute & nice souvenirs if you write on them to commemorate your experience & when my friend came to visit LA we wrote each other Christmas cards on them in the restaurant 🤷🏽♀️💖 Monty’s is the it girl of burger...
Read moreI have to say that I was very disappointed. I didn’t feel that I received the warmest welcome at the counter for a restaurant that is new. I expected a little more enthusiasm and a warm welcome. It was a dry welcome in the early afternoon. I made a special trip to downtown LA for what I thought might be the tastiest vegan burger I’ve tried. I ordered the bells and whistles (burger, fries, shake). It came to $27. At first glance, the fries were overcooked. They were brown and very crunchy. They were a bit too salty and the burger was very salty too. It overpowered the flavor of the cheese, lettuce and tomato. The shake was good but not quite what I expected. It had a lot of things mixed in like a cheap blizzard at Dairy Queen. I wasn’t consistent with the photos on Instagram. It was literally vanilla ice with chocolate syrup, and chopped strawberries stirred in. It was also surprising to see other customers getting special treatment. Someone was given a free milkshake and another person was given an entire white chocolate candy bar after she was asked if she was a first time customer. My milkshake wasn’t even filled to the top and the other person’s was overflowing. I was a first time customer and I felt cheated. I think they need to be more consistent in their food presentation, warm to all customers and not fish for compliments by offering freebies. I also think the fries should not be overcooked and the patty need to be less salty. I don’t know if this is the same Vegan Impossible burger used at Cheesecake Factory but the one there didn’t taste salty at all. For now, I will stick to Native Foods, Veggie Grill and Gratitude. For the record, I probably wouldn’t have left a negative review if I had got a smile and a warm hello instead of a what do you want look. The whole experience was off putting especially when I was corrected when I said “double double” instead of double. This business is marketing themselves as the vegan in n out burger but acts offended if you ask for a in n out sounding menu item. Yet they have a secret menu and offer animal style fries and protein style burgers. I shouldn’t have to be a YouTuber or food blogger to be treated well enough to want...
Read moreHave been seeing recommendation for Monty’s burger everywhere. I’m not a vegan nor vegetarian but I don’t like meat and rarely eat meat. For those who aren’t meat eaters, this place may be good since I only have a handful of vegetarian burger experience but for the rest, you can not compare this to in-n-out or say it’s a decently good burger. I honestly can’t say this burger isn’t worth paying or returning.
Taste - 2/5: as described before, don’t compare this to in-n-out just because it has a thousand island sauce. It’s not the same. Also, the burger is simple and plain. Nothing innovative except they did a decent job trying to make meatless meat taste like meat. However, it’s obvious it’s not meat. This may just be me but I have always had a hard time finishing beyond burger or other meatless meat burgers; you can say that it makes me feel queasy? monty’s were no different, I had a really hard time taking in those last two bites. Lastly, sides are sides and so are the sauces, again, nothing special. The oil made the fried side foods taste very old. It had a good bite to it though.
Price -0/5: it may be that it’s located in KTown so rent and labor is expensive but to pay $20+ for a single cheeseburger, drink, and side of fries/tator mix (sauce is $1 extra) is RIDICULOUS. How is a meatless burger that is around 5” in diameter more expensive than a gourmet burger? Also, just went to in-n-out (haven’t been there in a while) and although their prices differed than before, a full combo meal was less than $9.
Service - 2/5: a lot of people are there to pick up their online or call orders, for first timers they need to clearly mark “pick up order” location. Workers were friendly.
Convenience - 0/5 street parking in busy street. Good luck.
Cleanliness - N/A hard to tell due to covid and since everything from ordering to pickup is done outside. Oils from fried food did taste...
