My wife, a friend, and I decided to visit Tokyo Haus Sushi & Grill All You Can Eat at their new location in Little Tokyo, DTLA. Having frequented their previous location, my friend and I had always enjoyed exceptional service, so we were eager to experience the same high standards. Unfortunately, this visit turned out to be a major disappointment and a far cry from what we had come to expect.
Upon arriving, we were promptly seated at our table, but that was where the promptness ended. For the next 20 minutes, no one approached us—not even to offer water or take our drink orders. Initially, we assumed they might just be busy, so we waited patiently. However, after 20 minutes of being ignored, we decided to make an effort to get someone’s attention. We raised our hands to signal for assistance, only for two waitresses to lock eyes with me and then proceed to walk away, completely ignoring us.
To make matters worse, our table was situated right next to the area where food was being brought out, yet no one even glanced in our direction. Finally, I managed to stop a server passing by, who begrudgingly brought us water and menus after what felt like an eternity—40 to 45 minutes of waiting.
We tried to be understanding, as it was clearly a busy night, but our patience wore thin when we noticed every other table receiving prompt service. The other diners couldn’t help but notice our raised hands and the lack of attention we received, with some even exchanging puzzled looks. It felt as though we were being actively ignored, leaving us to wonder if we were being stereotyped or if this was simply negligence.
When our food finally arrived, things only got worse. One of my sushi rolls was missing two pieces, which I then spotted on the floor. Shockingly, the server didn’t even acknowledge this, handing us the plate as if everything was fine. When we pointed it out, they replaced the missing rolls but attempted to charge us extra for them—despite the fact that they were part of the order and had clearly been dropped by the staff.
The service throughout the night was appalling. Despite our best efforts to remain patient and courteous, the waitstaff’s unprofessional behavior, lack of attentiveness, and poor communication left us feeling frustrated and unwelcome. Their body language and demeanor showed no effort to make things right or improve our experience.
To add insult to injury, the restroom ended up providing better service than the waitstaff. While the food itself was good, it was nowhere near enough to redeem the experience. We had hoped the new location would live up to the reputation of the previous one, but this visit was enough to ensure we won’t...
Read moreWow this place is bad. I like many others got hooked in by the Youtube and Tik Tok reviews, but I don't necessarily believe they are lying or don't know the difference between fresh and old fish. Restaurants will always "up" their game to reviewers to appear better than they are. The real issue here is the Yelp reviewers who think they know what good food is when it's not.
We stopped by around noon on Saturday and at first service was great from all three workers. We were helped by Ken, and then two girls who we did not catch their names but it was a hispanic girl and a Chinese girl (we found out she was Chinese through conversation). As the meal went on, the hispanic girl had a huge attitude which made the experience worse. Ken and the other girl were a delight the entire time.
One big issue with this tiered menu gimmick is that although they have separate menus for placing your order, the "picture" menu doesn't indicate which item belongs to which. So because it was our first time we had to keep checking to make sure items weren't missing. OR sometimes we encountered items misspelled or mislabeled, for instance on one menu it reads "cucumber rainbow roll" while the other menu just said "cucumber roll".
We started off with some nigiri. Some reviews said the cuts were bad and the rice was too much. We didn't face that, actually the rice was almost non-existent. However, the tuna had a terrible fishy smell, it was warm, and it was nothing close to "fresh". I know, I know, how "fresh" and "quality" can an AYCE spot be? Well to be fair, Hikari up in Chatsworth is so busy every day that there's no way their fish isn't fresh and in the 12+ years we've been visiting, we have never encountered a "fishy" smell.
The salmon nigiri was okay, again just warm and chewy. The eel was dried out and didn't have any sauce. Later we got the lemon pepper salmon which actually comes seared, this was better than the raw salmon.
The blue crab was rancid. Absolutely disgusting. We each took a bite and that was more than enough. The Tempura was greasy and somehow the veggies were still raw. The fryer temperature was not set right.
The cucumber rainbow roll was not made well and fell apart. The cucumber had so much skin left on and was so thick, it couldn't be wrapped properly.
The garlic tuna roll was again fishy and had no flavor.
The dynamite roll was good, of course since it was baked and covered in sauce.
Lemon flush roll had uneven lemon slices and just didn't mesh well. The unagi lover barely had any unagi. And the seaweed salad was slimy. The baked salmon was decent.
Stay away at all...
Read moreStaff is friendly and the staff spoke Korean and English. The rolls covered in sauce tasted great and I feel like that’s where this restaurant focuses most of its efforts. I paid extra for the premium menu for $54.99 and for that price you get access to the premium sushi. I find it a bit stingy that this buffet restrict these premium sushi to a limit of 1 order per guest but it is understandable since the premium ones have great plating and you can tell the chef put a lot of effort to make it pretty. The whole point of all you can eat is to be able to order as much as you desire but the effort the chef have to put to make it pretty is a lot of work. Montreal’s K2+ Bistro, Vancouver’s Shabusen Yakiniku House, and Richmond’s Ninkazu all you can eat sushi doesn’t have this restriction as well and includes sashimi in their regular menu. In terms of value, this restaurant lacks behind other restaurants of similar fashion. However it makes up for it in terms of plating and presentation. All the premium sushi’s have special plates and wood boxes that feels unique and authentic to Japanese restaurants. Plating is very nice with various flowers as decorations. The internal decorations of the place are also very nice and have pictures of Mont Fuji, cherry blossoms, etc. In terms of variety, they excel at that. There are a huge variety of desserts, rolls, sashimi, and sides. However I found it a little disappointing that the buffet doesn’t include...
