I love matcha and this place has been on my list for a long time. So when I finally stopped by yesterday, I was pretty excited and giddy.
Weâre discussing what to get and the cashier girl seemed annoyed AF we werenât ready to order yet. So we felt rushed to just choose and order the matcha soft serve on a cone. Mind you, they charged us $0.75 extra for the cone when I looked back at the receipt the next day. Are you serious? Iâve never had an ice cream shop charge me extra for a cone. At least have the courtesy to tell me upfront the extra charges.
We pay for it and she looks at my card disdainfully (idk why itâs just a typical BOA card) and is frowning the entire time and doesnât even say thank you or look at me and just turns to the next customer while handing me back my card. SO RUDE.
I already got a bad taste in my mouth thus far and havenât even tried the dessert yet. Unbelievable. Once we get our soft serve, my excitement is quickly diminished as I take a bite of it and realize how overly powerful and bitter the matcha is in ratio to the ice cream base - which isnât creamy at all, but more icee-like. To me, that water-based matcha ice cream flavor was off-putting and I was literally forcing myself to finish as much as I could as to not waste a $7 dessert. But halfway through, I just couldnât take another bite and had to scrape and throw away the rest and just finish off the cone.
I should have just gone to my favorite matcha spot Tea Master Matcha Cafe. I really like trying new places, but I guess thatâs always the risk in doing so.
I want to try the other various matcha items, but the horrible service really makes me...
Read moreCalling all matcha lovers! This place is your heaven. They serve matcha green tea flavored iced and hot drinks, soft-serves, and desserts from Pitchoun, the fantastic French bakery located in Downtown. They only use organic ceremonial-grade matcha, which apparently has all these health benefits like antioxidants.
I got the hot hojicha latte, which is a roasted green tea. It was only slightly sweetened, nutty, and earthy. It might not be sweet enough for some people, but I rather liked letting the match shine through and enjoying it for that subtle, earthy taste. Out of their 8 drinks or so on their list, only 3 of them can be offered hot--the hojicha latte, matcha americano, and matcha latte. The great thing is that they also offer unsweetened soy milk or almond milk as alternatives. The barista said both the soy and almond were barista grade and would froth up to make a decent latte. The soy comes out a bit frothier, which is why I chose that one. I also enjoyed watching the barista froth up the matcha tea in the traditional Japanese way with a matcha whisk and a bowl. He then poured the matcha tea into my cup, then added the frothed milk, just like a latte. It was a performance worth watching!
I will definitely come again and spread the news to all my green tea loving friends. I already know that I'm going to try the Pitchoun desserts next...

Must say that I am very critical of matcha flavors as I have been to Japan multiple times. I have had really good matcha in Japan and places here with matcha flavors have always disappointed but this place was a pleasant surprise! Their matcha soft-serve is rich, thick and creamy accompanied by the slight astringent taste of the matcha powder. It is highly evident that they use real, quality matcha from Japan rather than cheap knock offs.
I am giving it a 4/5 because I feel like their ice cream is on the sweet side and if I were to compare it to Tea Masterâs soft serve, I like that better because it is not as sweet and lighter in texture but that can just be a personal preference. Although both Midori Matcha and Tea Master uses high grade matcha, tea masterâs soft serve is also cheaper ($3.5)but the quality is just as good or even slightly better by a sliver while Midori is on pricey side ($5) for a serving of matcha soft-serve while only ~$3.5 for the soft-serve. would like to come back here and try the other desserts and...
