While on vacation in California from Texas two years ago, we came across Trejo's Taco's off La Brea by accident. Unfortunately, it was closed and/or being remodeled.
My family being big fans of his, we wanted to make certain the next time we were back in the area to put it on our bucket list of places to eat/visit.
Fast forward to the present, we are in California once again and were in Hollywood. We were excited to discover there wasn't just the Trejo's Taco's location, but that there was also Trejo's Doughnuts as well as Trejo's Cantina within a mile radius of Hollywood Blvd.
Before venturing out to tour the Hollywood Walk of Fame, we stopped in to Trejo's Cantina to have a few beers and something light to eat.
Although the location and atmosphere were very appealing, the food was a bit spicy for my taste.
I would've expected our waiter to recommend any specials of the day or something less spicy, especially considering how the Happy Hour menu did not specify that my order was as spicy.
Upon paying our tab, we discovered a small sign/poster at the register that read: Order the "Mayan M.C. Burrito" and receive a FREE gift.
Had we been made aware of this special we would've gladly have ordered this special to receive a free cap from a much anticipated show.
Once out of the restaurant we went about our scheduled plan. We walked Hollywood Blvd touring the stars and got to see a movie in the making. We walked the outdoor mall and got to see the Hollywood sign from a distance.
Also on our bucket list was seeing the TCL Chinese Theatre, but the road was barracaded and there was a heavy police presence.
Since we were returning to Hollywood the next day, we opted to wait and see the rest of the Hollywood sites the following day, the TCL Chinese Theatre included.
It wasnt until the following morning I awoke to TMZ's wrap up segment of the Premiere to Mayans M.C. held at the TCL Chinese Theatre the night before. The day we were there!
If the service at Trejo's Cantina weren't enough, they failed to advise us of the upcoming premiere later that evening during our visit.
You would think a restaurant owner and his staff would be enthusiastic to share that bit of information. Especially when you have a menu item name specifically in honor of said show and the fact that we showed such interest in the show!
We will forever remember our trip to Hollywood and Trejo's Cantina as a missed opportunity to meet some...
Read moreA friend of mine had eaten here when he was in Hollywood. I am not big on Mexican food because I am not huge fan of highly spiced food, but my husband enjoys it, so when we were in Hollywood recently, decided to check it out. I figured I could find something I liked.
The draw here is the use of name of actor Danny Trejo. His face is used on the menus and there is branded merchandise and art throughout. There is interesting decor of art celebrating family and Hispanic culture, a small patio and seating. The cocktail bar occupies most of the space.
Despite reviews of Anthony Bourdain and other food critics, neither my husband nor I thought the food was that great. Additionally, my husband decided to try strawberry marguerita, but there was no taste of strawberry whatsoever - tequila all the way. He did not finish his drink.
We decided to try the tacos, which were a little expensive per taco. The presentation was good, but the portions and food itself - not so good. I wanted to try the shrimp taco, but it was made with a Diablo (hot) sauce, so I opted for the Baja fish (fried) with mango salsa and cole slaw on flour tortilla. The pieces of fish were small and not that tasty. My husband also tried the carnita taco, but he did not like the flavor or texture, so he sent it back.
As we ate our meal, we saw other plates being served to surrounding tables that looked appetizing and portions a lot more generous that the tacos. The service was good, but all around I do not think that it is worth the bang for the buck.
This restaurant is located inside a small strip near Selma Avenue. There is valet parking here for $10, but the lot is usually full, so you may have to park a few blocks and walk. There is also a lot next door.
Not one of my favorites, I do not think I will...
Read moreI visited this restaurant a few days ago (first day in LA) I absolutely loved my meal and my server was very helpful and attentive. I got a few tacos, guacamole and a really tasty beer.
I decided to make another trip for food because I enjoyed my first experience so much. But the second time was a completely different experience.
I came in and it took about 2 minutes to be greeted - not long. I told the server I wanted to sit at the bar - she told me to sit anywhere that I liked. So I went to the open spaces near the bar and every single open seat was still dirty from the last patrons.
I told the server all the spots weren’t clean and she told me to just have a seat at one of the tables. I proceeded to tell her that I preferred the bar.
I’m not sure why my preference for the bar upset her but she snapped at me and told me to wait. I said ok and stood there waiting patiently.
A few minutes later, the bartender asks me if I needed anything and I told her that I was being helped by the other sever because the bar was dirty. As I was telling her this, she interrupts me by saying that she was super busy with other patrons and blah blah blah.
The problem here is I wasn’t really upset about the dirty spaces. I was willing to wait for them to clean them. Their unprofessional reactions and slight attitude towards my comment about their unclean spaces is what bothered me. I left the establishment because of this - which was very disappointing because I was looking forward to eating there.
Just my experience. I won’t be back. But I highly recommend trying this place out if you enjoy...
