These guys are f*^%ing awesome!!!
Every time I go here, I end up getting lost in whatever's spinning and their great selection of classic and oldschool records. Some very relaxing nights spent here roaming the stacks after a long night at work, I'll tell you.
All the employees are super helpful and knowledgeable, great info about not just the music, but also the turntables! I just got into the record hobby about a year ago, and they totally hooked me up with advice about what type of player to look into, too. Trust me, these guys aren't your run-of-the-mill enthusiasts, they're damn professionals.
Great selection, well organized, easy to navigate, and unbeatable prices! Everything from Hall&Oates to Johnny Cash, movie soundtracks to Billie Holiday, expansive singles section and always a bargain bin out front – with actual good finds! And make sure to ask to see the awesome vintage gear upstairs, so dope.
Above all else, these guys are super welcoming and friendly. (Side note: I also later found out that they are very supportive of other local businesses, particularly in the arts for one of the small theaters down the street). One time I had to make a return, and Chad was so amazing. So cool and understanding, and THEN I left my keys by accident and the dude chased down the street to get them back to me! What a cool guy!
End of the day, in the age of digital downloads and stagnant/impersonal/expensive megastores (cough cough Amoeba...), what we all need is a place to go to really appreciate the good stuff. What these guys are selling isn't just great tunes, it's a dusty little welcoming community.
Go there and get yourself lost for a while... Maybe we'll run into each other because, trust me, I...
Read moreI was looking to sell Vinyl Records decided to take them to"The Record Parlour"in Hollywood. Parking was nasty and I had to use a meter and lug the box to the store. I had to ask the man if he worked there cause he gave me no greeting. I asked if he would be interested in any of the records. He quickly went through them in a few minutes their were 66 records he offered $40 for the entire collection. That amounted to 60 cents per vinyl. That seemed low to me so I said I will check what Amoeba Music will offer since it was about a three minute drive away. I said I will come back if they have the best offer. The man then used pressure tactics on me and said if I returned the offer would no longer stand. I explained I was selling them as a collection so nothing would change, he then counted the amount of records so he would know the collection size if I returned. I then went to Amoeba Music with the exact same records. They took a full half hour instead of three minutes to go over the collection before giving an offer. Amoeba Music offered $135 cash or $180 store credit. I took the cash . Seems pretty shady what The Record Parlor did. Please check elsewhere if you’re a seller. Seemed like a neat store if you’re a buyer had some $1.98 bins and you might get something neat. Just don’t like that Amoeba Music gave me over three times more than the The record parlour, the offers should have been competitive. I have no doubt that I will be personally attacked called rude or otherwise defamed, as is anyone who gives this store a low...
Read moreThis shop has a pretty large selection of jazz, soul, funk and what they throw into the very broad category of “rock” (a very broad genre indeed, and theirs isn’t organized in any useful way). The larger problem is, their inventory is in poor condition - I would give most every disc I pulled a G/Good or worse rating. None had been cleaned before being put in the bins - I’m not even sure they’d been looked at before hitting the floor given some of the comp pricing within the store. To that end, and as other reviewers note below, most records are simply OVER-PRICED. New arrivals of G-condition platters at $25.98?!?! Might as well buy it new for $34. I also have to second the repeatedly mentioned arrogance of the staff which I encountered a bit of as well. All that said, with all the choices in town, I won’t be back.
IMHO- Quantity over Quality doesn’t win in the used record biz.
Reply to Owner's Response below: Feel free to call me ignorant. But your store's inventory is in poor condition. I spent a good 2hours digging and I saw what I saw. I know what I paid there for a few poor condition used records. And I even know how to rate a used record and what to pay for new discs at new/used shops all over the country (both Brick & Mortar locations (in Boston, NYC, Seattle, Austin, Lousiville, Pittsburgh, and, yes, even LA), on Discogs, and online clubs such as Vinyl Me Please. Again, just my humble opinion....
