Famous Mike's of Macon — Restaurant in Macon

Well where do I start (long review but worth the read). Normally I do not leave reviews, but I believe this place deserves a review. The reason I came to this place was because of the good reviews. I gave it 2 stars because all wasn’t bad. The food was not bad, but I had better. I was also extremely hungry so I ate it and didn’t complain. The pancakes had this weird grainy taste, the turkey bacon was okay (can’t really go wrong there), the eggs were actually great and tasted fresh, the sweet tea was very refreshing, and the grits were okay but taste like they were slow cooked in chicken broth.

Now for the service. When I walked in, no one greeted me which I found strange. And it wasn’t busy as only 5 people were in there. I seated myself per the sign that said seat yourself. Still no one greeted me for about 3-5 minutes. Finally my waitress came and she was nice, but…..nevertheless, I still stayed and didn’t complain. Plus, I was extremely hungry and did not have time to go anywhere else on my lunch break. After I received my food, my waitress did not return to me one time to ask how was the food or did I need anything. When I completed my meal, I started looking around for her and another waitress said “are you looking for your waitress” and I said yes. So she went and got her from talking. And when I say talking, I mean talking. It was another lady behind the counter talking the entire time too “loudly” about how she is accident prone, and how she was in wheelchair a long time ago, and how she broke her tibia, and how she broke her foot, and so on and so forth. It was quite annoying to be honest. The reason it was annoying is because she was so loud while talking to staff members. My waitress was busy talking as well which is why she never came back and checked on me. This place should be called Famous Chat. But anyways, I received my check, paid, and asked for my to go drink to be without ice. However, my waitress brought my drink back with ice smh. When I brought this to her attention, she acted like I did something wrong lol and did not apologize. But oh well, it’s okay, no big deal. I left a tip (could have been bigger if my service was better), thanked her, and left. I still believe in giving something because I once too was a waitress in my past and know how important tips are.

But again, not all was bad and it wasn’t terribly awful service or food. The reason for the two stars is for the lack of customer service and not being attentive to your customer. I get that they were due to close in 2 hours, but still, customer service is key. Also, with my profession being a Customer Service Trainer, these type of things are big red flags to me. Would I return? No, but again all was not bad. Would I recommend this place, yes, if you’re looking for your food to come...

Food was excellent! Atmosphere was fine. Service from server was horrible!! When I first arrived I let the lady at the bar now I’m going to seat myself as it states however I just want to use the bathroom and get out of my work clothes. I came back out she said that was fast. I said lol. I sat down I waited for 15 minutes!!! I looked at to servers in their faces multiple times. I waved once to come over she ignored me so I assume she was not my server. The talker big gentleman that had on an apron came walking by from the back and told them to come and serve me because even he noticed I had been waiting. She came over took my order and I just chalked the mishap up as bad communication. No harm no foul. When my food came out she asked me if I needed anything I said no not at this time thank you. Notice I said when it came out. I sat there and ate, watched a 30 minute show on my phone while I was eating, and she never came back to check on me. As soon as I finished my food she gave me my check. (Which lmk she was paying attention) I said here you can take it now but just as earlier she ignored me. So she came back within five minutes and took the check. I began with please just put yourself in my shoes before and hear me out. I explained everything that happened and while I was talking she cut me off and said oh we give good service here. I said yes she did looking at the other server. I then proceeded to say just imagine if this service had happened to you I am still tipping you but if I do not tell you you will never know. She turned said I don’t need your tip and walked away so I stood there and waited for her to bring me my change which she never did. (I never raised my voice not was upset, not my personality) I stood there long enough to watch her count out the change but she still didn’t bring it over to me I also talked to the couple that was beside me and she never looked up. They agreed that my service was not what they experienced)Then her friend came over and said, “ I mean!! UGH!!!” It’s such a shame because I really enjoyed my food and found a real gem however, with servers like her and her friend I will never be back. You can bet your bottom dollar on that. I know they will try to downplay this review, and when I say they I mean the servers. However, roll the tape 8/23/22 @1220. Boy do I have a lot to say about this place! Somewhat of a hidden gem in Macon but ever since I found it I go at least twice every time I’m in town!! I always tell people everything I’ve eaten here has been the best of its kind! Most recently I had the little Martha chicken biscuit and the south bound sausage for breakfast. The biscuits were cooked perfectly, they were soft and buttery and a perfect pillow for some wonderfully fried chicken and beautifully cooked sausage. Then for lunch I had the Duane burger and tater tots. The burger was cooked to perfection as was the bacon. All the topping were fresh and delicious. The tater tots were also wonderful. I have also had the pancakes here and let me tell you they are like nothing else I’ve ever had. They are so soft and have a hint of cinnamon and beat out any pancakes you can get anywhere else, even homemade. I have also tried their cocktail sauce and growing up in the gulf coast this still beats out anything I’ve had back home. The key lime pie is a brilliant white, which is always the sign of a good key lime pie and it has a taste to back up its appearance. The interior is wonderfully decorated with all sorts of Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead etc merch. It has ample seating and you always feel at home inside. The servers are all very polite with wonderful attitudes and I’ve never had a bad experience with any of them. Lastly I have to talk about the prices, with this quality of food you’d be shocked to learn that this place is cheaper than anywhere else around. When I got the chicken and sausage biscuits and tater tots plus a drink, it worked out to be cheaper than going to McDonalds even after tipping; and it tasted a whole lot better than McDonalds ever could! This place is ran by people who really really care and it shows!! Can’t wait to be back the next time...
