Can’t say enough good things about Kudzu’s food, service, and the hospitality of its owner.
First of all, this not your ordinary fried seafood, sandwiches and burgers and bar food establishment. It is a cool, hip place to hang in Downtown Macon to relax and enjoy some seriously great food and drinks at reasonable prices. I was told that the owner and his wife started as a catering company in Macon and that innovation shows in how the menu items are presented and served. Since they are originally from Mobile, Alabama there is a Cajun/Creole influence in some of the menu items; but it is by no means overwhelming.
My wife and I started with the Jampups Jambalaya Hush Puppies, which were very original, not greasy, and delicious. In fact, NONE of the grilled or fried items that we ordered were cold or greasy.
The garden salad was very nice and big enough for two to split.
My wife loved her grilled Mahi Jezebel. I tasted it and loved the combination of subtle Cajun/Creole spices with some variety of fruit jams. It was cooked to perfection.
I really loved my Grilled Lobster Cheese Sandwich and it delivered the gourmet flavor bonanza that I expected from its description of lobster, diced tomatoes, green onion, and mascarpone and smoky provolone cheese. Unlike a lot of places, they DID NOT skimp on the lobster meat and you could taste the delicious, sweet morsels through the mix of cheeses.
As for our sides, the french fries and fried okra were hot, crispy, and not oily. The cheese grits were made the traditional way.
Having never been to Alabama to have a Lemon Icebox Pie, we tried a piece and thought it was a nice, less sweet, and more delicate version of a Lemon meringue pie. Glad we tried it!
Important to note that we had our two small dogs with us in Kudzu’s dog-friendly dining patio area and it was quite comfortable with the servers bringing the pups water and the tables spaced comfortably apart from each other. We were vey fortunate to have the owner sit down and chat with us about traveling with dogs. He is quite humble, in that he never mentioned who he was, until I figured it out because one of his staff was was talking to him about fixing some pipes.
If you’ve even been to a catered event, like a wedding or corporate event, and said to yourself, “Wow, that was some of the freshest, most creative, and best tasting food that I’ve had in a while”, that’s what you can expect at Kudzu Seafood Company, along with great service at a...
Read moreAll these reviewers got it right, this is a GREAT Cajun and seafood restaurant in little ole’ landlocked Macon, GA!
Came in with a party of seven on a Thursday night about 7 o’clock and there was no wait. We were able to get right in and get our food. Service was fast and friendly. Our server, Mikayla, was AWESOME! Knowledgeable about the menu, welcoming and efficient, she couldn’t have been more charming.
There were so many things I wanted to try on the menu! It was great that I came with a group of friends because then I got to sample lots of things!
We got a bunch of appetizers including the jam pups – jambalaya hush puppies, the jezebel sausage and fried pickle planks. The jam pups were good, but my favorite of those three was absolutely the jezebel sausage bites - alligator and pork sausage served with a sweet and spicy “jezebel” sauce to dip them in and some crackers for crunch!
By the time our entrees came, I was so impressed with what I was eating, I completely forgot to take pictures.
My friend and I ordered different things and promised to share so that we could split our meals and sample more of the menu! I got the red snapper royale, a large plank of tender white fish smothered in a gently spicy shrimp and Tasso cream sauce. The creamy, smoky Tasso ham sauce was a perfect compliment to the shrimp and snapper. I had cheese grits and gumbo on the side and they were so good too.
My friend ordered the LGC, a lobster grilled cheese. She got a giant sandwich with perfectly crunchy bread filled with succulent lobster and creamy, tangy cheese plus diced tomato and green onion. The LGC made my taste buds explode in happiness. It doesn’t get any better than this, folks. The LGC is crave-ably delicious.
Desserts were lemon ice box cake, with a meringue your grandma would fawn over, a giant slab of chocolate cake, not too sweet with multiple layers of cake and frosting and my favorite, their “cheesecake of the moment” was shockingly good.
Can’t forget drinks! They have a great selection of local beers and hard cider and a creative, coastal-themed cocktail menu. My “Orange Beach,”with Captain Morgan’s, Malibu, pineapple, almond milk and grenadine was dangerously smooth and sweet.
This was one of those restaurant experiences that makes you sad you don’t live closer. I’ll definitely be coming back when my travels take me to...
Read moreService: 11/10 The service at Kudzu Seafood was outstanding! Our waiter was friendly, humble, and helpful. As an indecisive eater, I usually let the waiter/waitress order the most popular dish. Our waiter was extremely accommodating and talked me and my comrade through that day’s specials and the most popular dishes. While dining, we noticed a manager walking around the restaurant to answer questions and inquire if our food was to our liking. She was knowledgeable about the menu and understood how each dish was prepared.
Atmosphere: 10/10 At Kudzu Seafood Company, the dining experience starts before you even enter the restaurant. The front of the restaurant creates the ambiance of going to a seafood joint on a coastal vacation. Upon walking inside, the ocean getaway vibe is continued with the interior design. Decorated in blues, greens, and brown tones, the restaurant feels like a homey, aesthetic marina. All of the staff was welcoming and swift.
Food: 8/10 The food is well-plated and perfectly cooked. I did not see a single overcooked piece of seafood (which I have seen many). However, if you are used to a heavily seasoned platter, you may not find it here. I believe that the focus of the chef was to showcase the quality of the seafood and produce; not how much seasoning they can smack onto it. I had Redfish over rice, topped with sauteed bell peppers, onions, and the works. On the side, I had grilled green beans. The green beans were to die for! They were grilled to perfection. The green beans had some kind of pork and potatoes mixed in, which played up the flavors. The Redfish was so tender and flaky that I almost thought it was undercooked. The flavor of the Redfish depended on the sauteed vegetables and red rice. Overall, I had a pleasant meal and would come again.
