The server I had this evening was horrible! She was a very thin, young, married girl with braces possibly. She was wearing a tee shirt that said "got braces", however I'm not certain she was wearing braces because I didn't see her much although I was the only patron in the restaurant. She was involved in a deep possibility 15 - 20 minute conversation with a couple that had already paid. My order was simple and wouldn't have taken but only a few minutes as it was one of the soups and a chicken salad sandwich. I looked back at the server a couple times to indicate to her remember me??!! She continued her conversation. I got up and went outside to vape. I was watching my table. I vaped twice and she brought my food. I immediately walked back in and she was still standing at the table, I ignored her this time! My food was delicious! The sandwich was wonderful. My order had been sitting back there so long that my soup had a dry cracked top on it! After stirring for several seconds it blended. The point is I was the only patron and she treated me with such disregard. I hope the owner or manager reads this! This...

There were things about my first (and only) experience that I liked, and some I didn’t:

They have good homemade baked goods that are reasonably priced. I liked the butter parmesan topping on the pesto grill. The service was nice. Their prices are reasonable overall. The dining room was clean; no music though.

Even though it isn’t indicated on the menu, the Reuben comes with lettuce, tomato, and onion, for some odd reason, which is an absolute NO-NO! I would let it slide if it didn’t taste terrible, but no; it’s awful. Also, even though I was basically the only person in there (got there as soon as they opened) they still got my order wrong: I wanted the loaded potato soup and they gave me chicken tortilla, and I didn’t get the broccoli salad I had requested. They also charge a credit card fee, which isn’t prominently displayed until you get to the register and look to see a small sign indicating as such.

Not a bad experience, but not what I was...

Not very good at all. My order was mostly Luke warm and full of canned cheese and cheap Turkey and some white sauce with a couple pieces of heat-n-serve bacon on top. I didn't understand that and it tasted ok.

What's odd about the place is when you walk in you don't smell...food cooking...or hear it. How is the food being prepared in the back?

On to other dishes...My son got grilled cheese and tomato soup. The soup looked and tasted like Prego spaghetti sauce. My daughter got french bread pizza and it was too limp to pick up as the bread wasn't toasted enough. Granted it looked attractive.

The rest of the family got hamburgers that were pretty good sized but looked...weird. It looked like it had been warmed up in an oven like the food you get at high school.

All in all, it was a poor affair and very disappointing.

Our waitress was...

Family of 4 (2 and 4 year old) ordered two Downtowner trios. Excellent options, delicious items! Sandwiches were great, sides were great, my husband rVer about their loaded potato soup, pasta salad were great, cheesy bread was ok, tasted better with the marinara sauce they provided. Got a sandwich, soup, cheesy bread, bag of chips and pickle for $10. Very, very reasonable! Cookies ($3) were gigantic and delicious! Bag of chips is next to it to show size. Staff were kind and accommodating. Self seating, they had tables and booths and tables outside. Handicap and stroller accessible. Really loved this place!

Our drive from French Lick to Cincinnati brought us through Madison, where we spontaneously decided to grab lunch at The Downtowner. What a fantastic surprise! We anticipated standard sandwiches, but these were huge and generously dusted with grated Parmesan. My "Downtowner Duo" (half a sandwich and a side) was an absolute steal at less than $10. We regrettably passed on their gigantic, face-sized cookies, which looked absolutely delicious. Highly recommend – we'll be back!

We can always count on Madison for something a little different. Living in a large city we are accustomed to chain restaurants and this is definitely not your typical chain food. We ordered an Italian and a Ranch Sandwich both were absolutely perfect. The sandwiches were delicious and extremely filling. We also ordered some of the best sweet tea we have ever had. We will definitely be back this summer and look forward to dining outside on our next trip. Thanks ladies!
