Ugly Apple Cafe — Restaurant in Madison

The cafe itself is of course awesome (I loved getting coffee & their delicious pastries/donuts for breakfast when I had jury duty earlier this year!), but this review is mainly for their catering. We used Ugly Apple to cater appetizers for cocktail hour at our wedding and they did a FANTASTIC job. We had so many compliments about all of our food, but people especially loved the taco dip and parmesan pesto pinwheels! The staff was so friendly, responsive, and helpful - both during the initial consult when choosing our menu/quantities, and on our wedding day. They took care of all the set up and packing up leftovers, and even made us each a plate of food so we could try everything (we were definitely too busy to go through the buffet line, so this was such a nice touch!). Unhappy pączki experience.

First impression: small for pączki, closer to elongated donut holes. First bite: immediately bite through a thin layer of pastry to filling which accounted for 75% of the volume of the thing. I have a hard time rating the texture of the dough, given how little of it there is. Really remarkably undersweet, both from a pastry and filling standpoint. Bears minimal structural resemblance to the authentic Polish item, but more disappointing that it was not a sweet treat. These observations were equally true across the three flavors I sampled.

Laurel and the team did the entire catering for my wedding and it was absolutely the best decision we could have made. We had buffet-style appetizers, dinner, and desserts through Ugly Apple and everything was amazing. We were able to get options to suit all the dietary needs of our guests and Laurel was so clear about communicating allergens and working with our needs. The food was delicious (so were the leftovers!) - we got lots of compliments from our guests.
