As a Chinese American, I must say that I’m quite impressed with what VGM/ Casarap has to offer as far as freshly made food goes. From its famous banana filled lumpia to its fresh steamed fish, everything and anything that you can get from here is relatively inexpensive and tastes extremely good! While I would like it if the place was open at night especially on weekends (I work at a news station during the night shift so yeeeaahhhh...) and that they serve their food using eco-friendly containers as opposed to styrofoam to-go containers and cups, overall, for freshly made food that’s served in a nice, homey atmosphere, I am very happy with the service that I received and I look forward to coming back here in the future. I’m sure that even my Chinese grandparents would appreciate the tropical vibes of the food served here. :) Eater’s tip 101: If you’re the type of person who doesn’t eat sweet stuff on a daily basis, but wants to try their sweet dishes, I recommend pairing them with a hot cup of tea or coffee, preferably a hot cup of green or Jasmine tea. Trust me, they go EXTREMELY well together! :D

A Filipino grocery store/ restaurant. A humble, unassuming, family owned business. I have been here with my Filipino friend for lunch. She was excited to get home food. There were options for one entree combo to three entree combo plates. I got myself a three entree one. It came with rice. I got one deep fried pork belly pieces. It was very crunchy, and well seasoned. The skewed pork bbq was very good. The third one that I took was chicken curry. The curried chicken was decent- but maybe I’m Indian and in my brain I have a very special place for chicken curry which cannot be replaced! And of course we took some freshly fried lumpia ( Filipino spring rolls). Overall, the food was filling, cheap. The portions were decent. My friend ordered a traditional dessert and he was not very happy with that.

I’ve visited twice in the last month and each experience is better and more flavorful than the next! To have a Filipino spot in Memphis is already a treasure but the service and the food are truly amazing. They have a variety of dishes. If you’ve never tried Filipino food I would recommend getting the Pancit (garlicky noodle dish) and Adobo, either chicken or pork (your choice). I would also recommend the banana leaves cooked in coconut milk. The taste is similar to turnip/mustered green mix. The Lechón (fried pork belly) I haven’t had yet but it is on the list. They also have Lumpia which can be sweet or savory. Each order comes with 2 large scoops of rice cooked to perfection. Definitely on the affordable side and you get a ton of food.

Love this place. Each time I visit for their unique Filipino cuisine I'm always pleased. It brings comfort to my soul... as an American... If I were of Filipino origin I can't imagine how much more comforting the taste of home would be. The yummy ice-cream... the beef or chicken with rice... not to mention the lumpia but the soup reminds one of being cared for as a child. The people are amazing and it's very clean. Did I even mention the wide variety of Filipino and other Asian grocery items. A must stop if in the Macon Rd/I 40 area. Across the way from the original Bass Pro... next to Popeyes at the end of the shopping center!!! Just wait for business hours; Tuesday-Saturday starting @ 11AM. 😃 dine in or take away... you...
