This was my first visit here and I do not plan on returning. I’m writing this review hoping management will see the feedback and adjust to provide a better experience for customers. The first thing is, the restaurant has a great location and could have potential to be very nice. However, the decorations appear cheaply done. It looks as if it’s set up for a low budget banquet hall, or wedding. The fake flower on the table should be replaced with either a real one, or something else if you’re not wanting to deal with real flowers. The chair covers are tattered and are unappealing, and the table chargers should be removed.
-Moving on from the decor, the women’s bathroom had a toilet paper roll setting out for one to pick up and set back down in order to use -NOT on a proper holder. This is a public restroom-at a restaurant-not your home. This is unsanitary. There were no bathroom hooks to hang your purse on in the stalls that one could barely fit inside. This is a simple fix that could easily be addressed. There were NO paper towels in the bathroom- and the restaurant had just opened. This means it wasn’t even properly stocked the night before or before opening. I had to dry my hands on my pants.
-Let’s move on to the food. I’m certain I was served left over Mac and cheese. It was Lukewarm and did not seem fresh. The flavor itself was fine but the consistency definitely tasted like left overs. The catfish had a nice flavor but tasted a bit fishy in certain bites. The corn bread cakes tasted left over also. They were barely warm-and if corn cakes are freshly cooked they’re piping hot off the stove. The texture and taste was terrible. Probably the worst corn bread I’ve had. The sauce I received for my fish in a little sauce cup was obviously left over from the day before- it had a discolored film over it how sauces do when they’ve been set up for a while. My husbands fries were probably the best food on the table. Our waiter was nice also.
-The last thing is you have to scan the QR code to see the menu. This would be fine if the website was working. The website was down and the waiter had to tell us off top of his head what was on the menu, of course not everything was mentioned. They had no paper menus. Eventually after they discovered the website was down they fixed it and we were able to view the menu. All in all, will not...
Read moreLast night, we had the pleasure of dining at Mahogany’s Downtown River location for a birthday celebration, but unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations.
Our reservation was for 8:30 PM. We arrived promptly at 8:25 PM and were asked to wait for a table. Despite the reservation, we waited approximately 25 minutes before being seated. During that time, the hostess who initially greeted us disappeared and did not return until it was time to seat us. When we inquired multiple times about the wait, we were only told that other guests were not getting up, even though there’s an hour-and-a-half table time limit.
Once seated, we noticed cleanliness issues right away. Our table had starters placed on the table that had clumps of gum and old food stuck to them. There was also hair on the table. We had to ask our server to re-clean the area and remove the dirty starters. She was visibly overwhelmed and stretched thin, covering multiple tables on the third floor. Though we appreciated her effort, it was clear she was overworked.
We ordered drinks and a spinach dip with crab meat. The dip arrived cold and gave off an unpleasant odor, as though the crab meat had just been dumped from a can without being properly prepared. We asked for it to be taken back. While our server returned it warmed, we clarified we no longer wanted it and she respectfully removed it from the bill.
Our drinks arrived about 20 minutes after sitting down. We waited quite a while for our food, which finally came around 10 PM. By the time we were ready to order a second round of drinks to enjoy with our meal, we were told the bar was already closed—before we even received our entrees. This was disappointing and made it difficult to enjoy our night.
By 10:30–11 PM, we felt rushed to eat and leave, which made the experience feel even more uncomfortable. Despite having a reservation and arriving on time, we were unable to enjoy the full dining experience.
While I cannot recommend the River location based on this visit, I do still recommend the original Mahogany location, which I’ve visited several times and always enjoyed. I hope this feedback helps improve future guest...
Read more90 minutes???
Let me start by saying the food at this establishment is amazing! The chefs are AWESOME!!
My family and I have gone for brunch and lunch a few times. Last night was my first time having a dinner experience. My husband and I typically go to Flight for dinner but I wanted to give the Mahogany dinner experience a try.
When the hostess seated us, she gave us what I assumed to be the script of “you have 90 minutes”. I also heard her state this to others seated nearby. We all had similar responses that resembled “really? You are just going to rush us out before we can even get settled”?
My husband and I were quite offended as we enjoy a great meal and the entire experience. When the two of us dine, we enjoy multiple appetizers, beverages, entrees and dessert.
The last thing we want to feel on the front side of our meal after a hectic work week is rushed!
This establishment is new and has been working to hire an ample wait staff. I’ve observed this since the inception and have been most patient with the process.
I’ve never gone to Mahogony River and the restaurant has been at more than 1/2 capacity, including last night. Therefore, to greet guests with a 90 minute experience is insulting. Moreover, it took at least 45 minutes to receive my whole red snapper entree.
The purpose of the post is to hopefully reach the owner or management to stop this practice as it is offensive to people who choose Mahogany over other tried and true upscale experiences. Never have I been “greeted” with a you have 90 minutes script.
If you have guests willing to give you a try, and spend hundreds of dollars, please exercise more tact, especially as you are growing your business and rely on reviews and word of mouth.
I will be back as my husband and I enjoyed everything we ordered and are consuming leftovers today! We ordered lemon drops, frog legs, salad, egg rolls, crab cakes, fried seafood platter and the whole red snapper entree.
However, it’s ridiculous that I felt compelled to ask the server if we’d be “put out” before we...
