We were on a 13-hour journey and decided to stop at Amar Restaurant as my husband, a die-hard chai lover, really wanted a good cup of tea. When we entered and asked if chai was available, they confirmed it, but as I stepped out briefly, we overheard the girl at the reception making sarcastic remarks like, “Are they coming just for tea?” This was disappointing, but we ignored it and placed our order for tea, samosa chaat, and later chole bhature. Since we were the only customers, I politely requested if they could make strong chai (karak), a reasonable and culturally familiar request, especially at an Indian restaurant. Unfortunately, the staff began commenting rudely in Hindi, mocking our request and questioning what more we wanted, which my brother overheard clearly.
When the tea arrived, it was very watery and lacked flavor, so my husband respectfully mentioned that it didn’t taste like proper tea. Instead of understanding, the server replied rudely, “This is how tea is, what do you want me to do with it?” Eventually, he offered to make a fresh one, but by then the atmosphere had already turned uncomfortable. We again overheard staff discussing us disrespectfully, saying things like, “First they asked for tea, now strong tea, now food too,” which was extremely unprofessional and unkind. We are paying customers and expected basic courtesy, not to be mocked or gossiped about. Being Indian ourselves, we know how important hospitality is in our culture, and this experience felt completely the opposite of that.
To add to this already unpleasant experience, my brother found a piece of aluminum foil in his salted lassi, which raises serious hygiene concerns. Despite remaining polite and respectful throughout our visit, especially considering the staff’s age, we were made to feel humiliated and unwelcome. We packed our food and left without finishing, as we no longer felt comfortable staying. This is the first time in all these years I’ve felt so disrespected in a restaurant, and I’m sharing this so others don’t have to go through the same. We will not be recommending Amar Restaurant—not because of the food alone, but because the way we were treated was deeply disappointing...
Read moreAmar India WAS my favorite Indian restaurant in Dayton. After a long hiatus due to Covid, upon my return I was saddened to see the lunch buffet be permanently removed. I've been 3 times this year and probably will not return again due to the horrible service that we had received by an extremely rude waitress today. She was rude on a previous visit so there is no benefit of doubt given at this point. She embarrassed me since I suggested the restaurant to my group of friends which included 20+ customers. Two families ended up leaving due to the unbelievable poor treatment.
The portions are small, prices have increased, and the final straw was rude service. I simply cannot tolerate this, while I tolerated the other changes due to the current inflation and economical issues. She rolled eyes at someone in my party when asking to see a menu, she told us there is no manager there and refused to give us contact information, and even said you can just leave. No one was shouting, she was just very unpleasant and rude. I've been to India a few times, my wife is Indian, I work with several Indians...this was not a cultural misunderstanding or an issue of miscommunication.
The sad thing is that I love their authentic tandoori chicken cooked in a clay tandoor. Their taste is fantastic for the items that I've ordered. However, they aren't the only show in town as there are several other Indian restaurants in the near vicinity, I refuse to be ill treated. My wife has reached out to the owner to address the issue, based on the results of that conversation I may...
Read moreI am a vegetarian. Going to some restaurants can be hard because they don't offer much in the way of non-meat options. I usually get stuck with french fries and a side salad or needing to make special requests that more often than not come out wrong and loaded with meat. At Amar India, however, half of their buffet is vegetarian and they have an extensive vegetarian section on their menu. I introduce this restaurant to as many people as I can and my best friend and I go here frequently. To name just one menu item as the best dish is impossible. All of it is so good. The buffet offers something new every time we go. For the meat eaters, everyone loves the chicken tikka masala. It comes in a creamy tomato-based sauce. The buffet offers appetizers, naan (Indian flat bread), soups, salads, several main dishes, and dessert. The vegetable pakora is a deep fried vegetable appetizer that is amazing. There is always rice available. I like to layer a small portion all over my plate because the main dishes have wonderful sauces and I can pile those on top of the rice. Once seated I scoop the food onto some naan and have the best mouthful of food ever. Then I get to experience it again and again with every bite. To finish, there is is always a fruit based homemade ice cream available. It tastes like mango and had chunks of cherries, pineapple, and other fruits mixed in. All of the food is just simply amazing and I would eat here every day if it were possible. I've tried to make Indian food at home but nothing compares...
