I just had dinner and wanted to help my fellow business travelers looking for food in the area. In summary, fellow travelers, if you want to spend a little extra money tonight to have something that isn't grilled/broiled/reheated chicken/steak or typical mall food chain this is a solid BBQ place that deliver's on my menu items as described. Places is Casual, family focused.
The Details; I got the combo which is 2 meats and 2 sides. I got brisket, white meat chicken, smashed potato's, fresh cut fruit. Here is the run down on each;
You get 2 'small cup cake' sized corn muffins as the complementary bread, with big droopy tops. I wish now that I took a picture of them because when I saw them I thought that it was a themed thing for the place as they had a lot of character and were surprisingly small from what I normally see being given out in similar restaurants, in any case they are not what they appear to be. They are corn bread and 'I believe' ricotta muffins. Small yes, warm yes, melt in your mouth good and worth taking small bits off at a time to enjoy the savory rich flavor, yes. If you've had ricotta pancakes this is the next best thing. If your not into the whole ricotta in baked goods thing, swallow them in 2 bites each.
Smashed potatoes Seasoned and whipped. Creamy and very hot. I had the gravy put on the side and am happy I did as I found the flavor of the smash great on it's own but for gravy fans this is a middle ground gravy, not too watery not to thick with a savory, beef drippings, smoky flavor.
Fresh cut Fruit Not 100% true to the name but defiantly cut within 2hours and fresh. Strawberry's still crisp and tart, cantaloupe and melon defiantly sitting in a container after being cut but still juicy and not starting to dry out on the sides yet. So it's defiantly worth getting.
--Note: When I go to a smoke house I expect what I order to come as the menu specifies. What on earth does that mean? If something lists 'slow cooked' 'smoked' or 'slow roasted' to me that means that it was cooked in that manor, past tense.
Brisket Smoked, lean (I only had a very very small piece of fat on one pcs), very tender (effortless to cut with a fort but it's also thin 1/4" thick cuts) flavorful and warm. I could totally understand someone saying the brisket was cool or cold if they eat everything else first, but I didn't expect them to leave it to burn on a smoker for me or try to ruin it by 're-heating'. It was excellent and defiantly came off the smoker just before dinner rush and I arrived about 30 after diner rush. good cuts, reasonable portion.
Smoked White Chicken Meat It didn't really explain how this was going to come, half a chicken bone-in or a full breast. I got a sudo-pulled chick breast with no skin, bones or fat. No complaints, it was great but in an effort to explain what I got, think of someone cutting a tender roasted chicken breast into chunks, not strips and then trying to pull them out of the roasted chicken with tongs. The result chucks, tuffs, small stripes and all manors of shapes but all white meat (by request), tender, savory, smokey goodness.
That was all $18.00. For a smoke house I find that to be a pretty average price and the food was better than average for me due to NOT sending me the average meat which is half covered in smoked Fat.
I hope that this review is helpful and to all travelers who don't feel like this sounds like the place to eat tonight, eat somewhere else and write a review for me...never know when I might be back in...
Read moreAs a native of TN, I know BBQ and Jim 'N Nicks has the best I've ever eaten. I ate there for the first time this week with my husband and father-in-law and we were all amazed at the high quality of the food and service. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, all expectations were exceeded. The hostess, Natalie, was very friendly and immediately made a personal connection with us, commenting on my father-in-law's Nationals ballcap and telling us about her recent trip to DC. Our server, Jennifer, was extremely personable and it was very apparent she loves her job and truly loves her place of employment. I don't know where to start with the food - I love to cook and seek out places where the food is scratch-made. Everything at Jim 'N Nicks is, and they even raise their own pigs in AL. We started with the pork hot link appetizer with pimento cheese, and from that first bite, we knew we'd found a new favorite restaurant. I couldn't decide between the pulled chicken or brisket for my entree, so I got both. I usually never get chicken in a restaurant because it can be so dry, but this chicken literally melted in my mouth. The brisket was delicious as well and my husband loved his pulled pork. The steamed cabbage was the best I've ever had (sorry Grandma), the cheese biscuits were light and flavorful (and I usually don't eat bread) and the mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy and again, better than Grandma's. We ended this pigout (ha) with a piece of lemon meringue pie. Like the bread, I'm not a big dessert eater and not really a fan of lemon meringue, but this was phenomenal. Topped with homemade whipped cream and seated on a delicious homemade graham cracker crust with sweet lemon between, it was truly divine. As we were eating, the manager came over to greet us, having heard it was our first visit there. It will certainly not be our last visit. My husband said even if the food weren't that great (which it is), he'd be back based upon the service alone - it's bar none, the best in Middle TN. I don't know how we've lived in Murfreesboro 3 years and missed this restaurant, but it has shot to the top of our favorites and we will be back...
Read moreIf you're driving through and want to try some Tennessee bbq, this is definitely not the place. We had problems with our order, and the only options they would offer were to replace my items the next day or a gift card. It took going back and forth with a manager for them to fill out a form to put money back on my credit card (I'll have to watch to see if they actually do it). If I'm not from here and driving through, a gift card or replacement the next day is useless to me.
As for the food, it was very lackluster. We got a brisket sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, not so naked potato, deviled eggs, and 1/2 doz sweet cheese biscuits. By far, the best part of our food was the biscuits. Our brisket sandwich was literally 75% fat. We just ended up with an awful cut of it. My husband eats brisket sandwiches often and said this was the worst one he'd ever had. I got the pulled pork sandwich. I assumed it would come with bbq sauce because it says their classic pulled pork comes with bbq sauce. Well, this sandwich was dry. It was still good, but it would have been much better sauced. The potato salad and deviled eggs tasted identical to one another, which took me by surprise. Not bad, but not good either. As for the potato, I can't tell you how that was because we never received it. I saw a lot of reviews saying to check to go orders but completely forgot.
We sadly will not be back to give this place another try. Just too much went wrong and wasn't good enough for...
