My wife and I brunch every Sunday and if it's a Sunday that we are in Myrtle Beach then we're at Johnny D's. Guaranteed! There is absolutely no shortage of breakfast options in Myrtle Beach and we have tried quite a few but none of them compare to Johnny D's.
On this visit we noticed a very welcomed addition to the patio. A tent. There's little to no waiting room inside and coming during brunch time it's guaranteed to be super hot outside especially in the summer. It was great to be able to sit outside and be out of the sun on a scorching summer day especially since the wait time is guaranteed to be between one and two hours. Even better, they added a beverage station that serves alcoholic drinks, slushies and coffee.
Ok...Let's get to the food. The menu is massive and it's also very eclectic. I mean the first time I came here one of the specials was a pistachio waffle. I knew then that was going to fall in over with this place. Today I got the grandslam breakfast because I just wanted a lot of meat. It comes with two eggs, bacon, sausage, ham and pancakes. Johnny D's was voted best waffle in SC by food network but their pancakes are nothing to sneeze at. The ham was soooooooooooooo good. I may have to order a side of it next time no matter what I get. My wife ordered the chicken and waffles. It was good but we've both definitely had better chicken and waffles. Not anything neither of us need to have again. What I did like was that the chicken was all white beast meat and not super breaded. Unfortunately it was not seasoned and couldn't really stand on its own. It needed to be paired with the waffle and syrup.
Highlights The daily specials are always awesome and can lure you from their already amazing menu Get the salmon omelet. The pickled onions are qan amazing compliment to the smoked salmon flavor Starbucks is so overrated...A Johnny D's red velvet latte will make yiur life worth living The strawberry lemonade mimosa OUTSTANDING Super friendly staff and Johnny D himself will often come out and chat with you about your meal I try pork belly on every menu that I see it and they have a pork belly Benedict. Really unique menu item with great execution. As delicious as it sounds
Room for improvement: Unfortunately they don't do reservations and I get it because the demand is so high and people who know how great it is are willing to wait but it'd be great.
You don't have to ask... Johnny D's will be our first stop after checking out of the hotel the next time we're in...
Read moreUsed to love this place but they have made placing an order to go such an unpleasant process I doubt I’ll be coming again. First they tell me they won’t take my order over the phone as they’ve done many times in the past I asked for them to help me out because I didn’t want to have to figure out an online ordering system. They refused and from Danielle’s tone right out of the gate I could tell how frustrated she was just for me asking. So then I went online to place the order since they wouldn’t help me and in ordering it’s a mess. There’s probably well over a list of 100 different things so finding what you want would be nearly impossible even if it’s arranged properly. However it isn’t English muffins plain are in the middle of the list and “English breakfast” is a mile and a half further down the list separated by totally unrelated like drinks. So I selected and English muffin then noted what kind of cheese and meat on it in the notes because it says that if you put something in the notes not included that it will just charge you more for it which I was fine with. So then I get a call after dealing with this and Danielle tells me “I rushed through the online ordering” and that “you placed the order wrong and will have to come in and place the order and wait here”. At this point I had to argue with her about how her own website works to even get her to just simply modify the order. The website literally said I could put in the notes what I wanted on the muffin and it would add it. Not a pleasant conversation as I’ve had it at this point because there is no excuse for trying to make it this difficult for a customer to place an order. Have some common sense and customer service. So then I go in there and get an obviously sarcastic “thank you for being so pleasant” neither of us were pleasant on the phone and I’m fully aware of that but she couldn’t help herself with the snide remark. I didn’t even respond because it’s obvious she was going to be right no matter what. I showed her the way her own website works and I didn’t get an apology just an excuse of “well the must have just added that.” Really stinks because I enjoyed coming to this place over the years very much but great food doesn’t justify horrible service and just in general trying to find ways to make things more difficult...
Read moreCeliac/Gluten Allergy Review 6 out of our party of 8 arrived but they would not seat them in an empty restaurant. When our 2 other guests arrived, they held the door for a party of 8 who the host took and immediately seated ahead of our party. We were crammed into a 6 person table and asked to move and they said no. Manager came over and offered for us to split our party to have more room. We opted out of this. Not a big deal because we are all friends. We start looking at the menu and it was VERY unfriendly to patrons. It is obvious this place has had an issue with unsatisfied customers before based on the writing in the menu. However, your future guests should not be punished for a previous guests’ experience. I went to order my food and ordered a breakfast platter that came with pancakes which I asked to have gluten free because I have celiac disease. They refused to substitute regular pancakes for GF because “they can’t do that”. They offered to split everything ala carte which would have doubled the price of the breakfast platter. So now I am punished because I have an allergy and cannot order something that I want on the menu? Who can afford to order every single thing individually? So I settled for the GF pancakes. I ordered 2 plain, GF pancakes. I was brought out pancakes with powdered sugar and strawberries and was told that’s how their GF pancakes were served. They could not bring me plain GF pancakes… they could only bring them with strawberries and powdered sugar and charge me $12 for that instead of the $6 price for just plain pancakes. We all considered getting up and leaving immediately after ordering our food but within 5-10 minutes after ordering our food came out and it was cold. The timing of which the food came out, the temperature and overall taste of the food would indicate that it had been made for a while and had just been sitting. The host and wait staff were courteous, it’s not their fault the upper management has made this place such a dictatorship. In summary, if what you want happens to be on their menu and you’re comfortable with paying premium prices for average quality food then you might consider...
