We were offered a great 3 night/4 day stay if we would sit through the HGV timeshare presentation. I told my husband, "I can say no" so let's do it. After receiving the details of our stay, I was pretty stoked to see the awesome pictures of the Anderson Ocean Club and Spa. And then we arrived. The lobby is ornate, the staff were friendly at check-in. We got our room number, 18th floor, stoked again that we were so high up so we would have unobstructed views of the Atlantic. Once we arrived at the 18th floor, there was a very odd odor upon exiting the elevator. It was strong and not appealing to the senses at all. No idea what it was causing the odor. We walked into our room to find the balcony was facing the south and was only big enough for 1 chair and a small table. Our view was of another hotel, and a construction project underway into the ocean. Although we enjoyed watching the cranes operating putting I beams in place and the excavator scooping sand out of the water. We notice the little things in places and were very disappointed that my husband had to tighten the toilet seat as it was very loose. There was zero counter space in the kitchen. The wall plug plates were installed crooked, and either the stove or the counter next to it was crooked. Oh, and for two people in a "resort" we had an incredibly small full-size bed. Nope, not even a queen, full-size. |Then came the day of the presentation. High pressure pulled out every trick in the book trying to get us to buy. Out of respect for our executive I'll call him, "J" just because he is just trying to make a living. J repeatedly didn't listen to what we were telling him. We kept telling him that we are not interested in traveling to places that are high touristy areas unless we go off season. We want to be where people are not. We don't want to hear cars, people, kids, city noise. We want to hear birds, the breeze blowing, nothing. After several attempts to sway us, he walked away and brought in the "closer". I have no problem calling him by name because Billy tried to tell me how to live our lives and how to spend our money. When I said that I want to pay off our house before I retire (in approximately 6 years) he went into this obnoxious speech about that is the stupidest thing a person can do. That every financial advisor will tell you to never pay off your house. I neither asked for nor wanted his opinion of the choices I choose to make regarding my house and my retirement plans. It was at that point that I got bossy back and flat out said, "I am not paying that amount of money" which was $44k at the entry level. He then said, we can get you started at $18,4. I said, "nope not paying that today." He said, you don't have to pay that today. It's only $2200.00 down. I said, nope I am not paying that either. He said, I don't understand it's only $10 a day or $70 a week. I said, I am not paying that, that, that or that - pointing at each figure on the paper in front of me. Billy then got up, said nice to meet you, have nice day, "J" check them out and abruptly left the table. We were taken to another room to wait for our "gift" for coming, which was supposed to be a free night stay at a Hilton property. But it is a form to send in after a night stay for a Visa prepaid card that I will receive 8 to 10 weeks after we stay, and does not cover taxes, or any other fees. AND they tried one more time to get money out of us by offering us a "preview of ownership" for a 7 night stay for only $2495.00. The lady was rather rude once I said, no we are not interested in that either. After 2 hours and 20 minutes, we finally got out of the preview center. While we enjoyed seeing Myrtle Beach and taking a break from the DFW mess for a few days, the spiel was very exhausting. |When Billy asked us about our room at the Anderson and we began listing the things we found to him, he said that Hilton owns the top 9 floors, but it is one of their older properties and so it is not in the best shape. Funny, I looked at units for sale in the building when we got home, and they look super nice and laid out very well. I think Hilton wants you to not be so happy there so that when they show you their premier property, you will be all over it. Traveler beware! They wouldn't answer any of our questions about maintenance fees or other fees. They kept telling us that we pay the ownership fee and that's it. Other reviews I have read tell quite a...
Read moreWe recently visited Myrtle Beach for the first time and, due to some last-minute changes, ended up booking our stay at the Hilton Grand Vacation Club Anderson Ocean. We were excited to be near the beach and take advantage of what the hotel (or rather, timeshare) had to offer. That’s on us—HGVC turned out to be a timeshare operation that rents out unused units. Apparently, this is a common theme in Myrtle Beach, but we didn’t realize that going in.
We booked an Oceanview King room directly through their website. However, the room we received had only a limited, partial view—definitely not what we booked. When we asked the front desk, they claimed we had reserved a “partial oceanview” room, even though we showed them our confirmation clearly stating Oceanview, not Partial Oceanview. No solution was offered, and the issue was brushed off. If you’re booking here, don’t assume the room type you reserve is the one you’ll get—check it carefully at check-in. I can confidently say I wouldn’t stay here again. Ever. In any scenario.
We arrived around 2:30 PM and were told our room wasn’t ready yet—understandable since check-in is at 4. We dropped our bag off, no issue there. But then came the billing confusion. The front desk employee kept trying to charge us more than the quoted rate (even after our deposit), including a hefty incidental hold. We had to pull out a calculator and go line by line before a manager eventually corrected her.
Next, we were sent to the concierge, John. He was friendly and helpful, but his real job seemed to be convincing us to attend a timeshare presentation, not helping guests with actual concierge needs. After we declined, he didn’t push further—credit to him. Others weren’t as respectful.
We grabbed some food and waited. Four o’clock passed with no update, and by five, we had to follow up ourselves. The room was finally “cleaned” and ready. Except, it clearly hadn’t been cleaned well. We found wrappers under the curtains, hair in the shower, and more garbage tucked under the ottoman. Not the Hilton standard we expected.
The room was supposedly “recently renovated.” The furnishings looked fine, but one design choice stood out: a window from the bedroom directly into the hallway. Yes, people walking by can see straight into the bedroom. While there were curtains, it was uncomfortable, to say the least. At night, the hallway lights kept the room illuminated.
Plumbing was another issue. The water pressure was intense—so intense it came out of the tub and showerhead at the same time. The shower couldn’t drain fast enough, and the toilet had the slowest flush I’ve ever seen. It all just felt off.
Then there’s the so-called “lazy river.” It’s a straight, narrow pool where you shift lanes to reverse direction—more a lazy rectangle than a river. Between that and the sand-filled pool area (likely due to the lack of access control), the outdoor space didn’t feel very well maintained or monitored.
Security was lacking. We received multiple pizza flyers slid under our door, all from the same place. I genuinely started to wonder how many Mike’s Pizza ads the building could possibly hold. Clearly, outside solicitors are wandering the halls unchecked.
The surrounding area also didn’t feel the safest, especially at night. If we return to Myrtle Beach, we’ll stay at least 10 blocks further north where the environment felt more comfortable.
And finally, no housekeeping for stays under five nights. I didn’t notice this listed on the website. You can request towels or toiletries, but no one cleans the room. At the beach, where sand and wet clothes pile up fast, that’s not ideal. We managed fine as two adults, but with kids, it would be frustrating.
Overall, this property didn’t meet expectations—either for a Hilton or for the price. Between the timeshare focus, cleanliness issues, strange design choices, lackluster amenities, and not even getting the room we booked despite proof, it was a disappointing experience. Not...
Read moreI would look to spend my money somewhere else before I stayed at this resort if I had to stay here in the future it would be my last choice it would be because I couldn't fine anywhere else at a good price. I checked in on 1/28 checkout 1/31. When I arrived a gentlemen by the name Taryn checked me he checked me into a room on the 21st floor I told him that was to high n that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the balcony that high up in the sky he proceeded to put me on the 2nd floor after going in the room I explained to him that my room didn't feel like it was ocean front because I was so low the palm trees were blocking the view of the ocean. I asked him could he put me on a higher floor he told me he couldn't. Mind you it's the off season so nobody's here Myrtle is a ghost town compared to spring summer. Minus the 2nd n 21st floor that leaves 19 floors n he couldn't find 1 room for me. Also when I told him I wasn't satisfied with the 2nd room he was visibly frustrated and started communicating in a very passive take it or leave it way. So I called the next morning looking to be put on a higher floor and atter a little back n forth I was told to check out n find somewhere else to stay by the front desk lady (not verlene but her side kick)because she couldn't find a room on floors 3 to 20 during the winter. I proceeded to go up to room and find another resort but l'll admit I was in complete shock and frustration because that was a first for me l've never been told to leave a resort because I wasn't satisfied with the room. While searching for somewhere for me and my family to stay the manager on staff called and did the right thing she upgraded my room and the room was nice and clean this is the only reason why i would consider going back but I highly doubt it. So we get to our check out day called to request late check out n get straight attitude. In fact everytime we called the front desk for valet room service etc the ladies at the front desk had a very unprofessional annoyed tone. We got the late check out but housekeeping came n knocked on our door twice before it was time to leave then they set outside our door for 20 mins and waited for us to leave. If I was looking to stay in Myrtle 2 places at least I would check before here ocean enclave or I would check the Airbnbs at the boardwalk resort a few buildings down towards the strip. The rooms are nice and clean for the most part but the staff is horrible as a whole of course there's always a handful of true professionals in any business. The front desk staff shouldn't be dealing with guest they will cause you to loose return business like me for example. Also I noticed condos for sale for hundreds of thousands of dollars at this location. Why would anybody pay $600k for this type of service!?!? We will be in the market for a condo down here for an investment/vacation property n the next couple years. I'll b sure to tell whatever realtor we go with to take Anderson ocean club off the list of possibilities. Update your staff or they will slowly run this resort...
